My personal favourite song of all time is “Bizarre Love Triangle” by New Order.
My current favourite songs are anything by The Gaslight Anthem.

Didn’t we all settle on “Radar Love” by Golden Earring a while back?
Burial’s Archangel is the pinnacle all songs.
Excuse me? The greatest song ever recorded is 3 minutes of vinyl ecstasy:
RIVER DEEP, MOUNTAIN HIGH - Ike and Tina Turner, produced by Phil Spector.
Okay, here’s a few more:
Sheila Jordan - The Crossing
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
Loreena McKennitt - She Moved Through The Fair
Leonard Cohen - Halleluja
Stevie Wonder - Fingertips, Part 1 and 2
Tracy Nelson - Down So Low
Rapper’s Delight - The Sugarhill Gang
Symphony No. 9 - Beethoven
The Power - Snap
Smooth Operator - Sade
I’ve listened to all but one or two songs listed in this thread, and I have to say there seems to be an over-representation of rather mawkish ballads among the selections.
You kids and your teen angst!! Get off my lawn!
Mack the Knife and of all the great versions either one of these will do me:
or
Burt Bacharach’s Anyone Who Had a Heart by Dusty Springfield. What an arrangement.
An operetta aria:
Dein ist mein ganzes Herz, from “Das Land des Lachelns” by Franz Lehar.
The Smiths - There Is a Light That Never Goes Out
Honorable mentions:
Depeche Mode - Question of Lust
R.E.M. - Fall On Me
New Order - True Faith
Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees
MGMT - Time to Pretend
The answer can easily change on a daily basis…but for today:
Dropkick Murphys - World Full Of Hate
Whoah, after listening to it now, 20 years later, I take that back. (We’re allowed one take-back, right?)
Uncertain Smile – The The (which is actually a name used by the genius Matt Johnson)
This always makes me feel like I am in grad school again. Pure early 1980s vibe.
This is not the best song in the world, it is just a Tribute.
Thanks for that one. I had never heard that song before. Beautiful songwriting, and a wicked piano solo. I may just have to pick up that album.
The funniest song ever is The Most Unwanted Music, a “scientific attempt” to combine all the least popular elements of music together into one 25-minute trainwreck of a song. It even incorporates Wallmart jingles -* several* of them.
I actually like it quite a bit.
Either Holland 1945 by Neutral Milk Hotel
or
All the Things You Are as performed by Ella Fitzgerald
or
Skyway by the Replacements
or maybe
I Wish I Was the Moon by Neko Case
or maybe…
Damn. Too hard. Can’t pick just one. But those four are up there.
This here.
Plus:
Alegria, from the Cirque de Soleil album
Rhythm is a Dancer, by Snap
Avalon, by Roxy Music
Take on Me, by A-ha
Caribbean Blue, by Enya
Joining A Fan Club-Jellyfish. Early 90s power pop with excellent harmonies.
For me, it’s Silversun Pickups with “The Royal We.” It’s newer, and I’m sure people’ll laugh at me for picking it, but it’s just. Freaking. Amazing.
