Best Time Ever with NPH

Anyone watch? I liked the idea of him crashing the opening couple’s events, but overall found it pretty ‘meh’.

I think I’ll give it one more try (a bro always gives his a bro a second chance), but I doubt I’ll stay with this one.

Oh boy was this underwhelming. I was hoping for more but it was pretty much nothing.

With a title like “Best Time Ever” it just begs for the moniker “Worst Time Ever” which is how I felt. I thought it was crazy frenetic, with NPH racing from one over-hyped event to another without any connections between them.

I was hoping for something like the old Carol Burnett show or perhaps Sonny & Cher, with lots of comedic bits and good music. Instead we had part Price Is Right, part Celebrity Acrobatic Challenge (and really, Reese Witherspoon?), part prank show. I was very disappointed since I had high hopes for NPH from his other recent TV appearances.

That sums it up nicely.

I like NPH but he’s so overexposed I can’t look at him. It’s like somebody’s trying to give you ice cream after you’ve eaten two gallons.

I thought it was pretty dumb overall. There were some moments, but for the most part it was largely forgettable.

I’m willing to give it a few episodes to find its stride. They may be able to figure out what works and what doesn’t. I also think, since its live, not unlike SNL, its probably a show thats going to be generally hit or miss. I told The Wife- really, what I want to watch isn’t this show… but catch the bits that go Viral the next day and not have to watch the other 90% because its the type of show where some segment is probably going to hit every week.

I also am not sure what NBC was thinking with the time slot Tuesday night at 10?! I’m sure they’re trying to get AGT rollover audience, but this show begs to be like… Sunday at 8… (A problem for NBC, I know, because of football… but it seems like a kind of fun show you’d watch with the family before sending the kids to bed on a school night)

BTE is a spin-off of Saturday Night Takeway, a UK show featuring cheeky Geordies Ant & Dec. One of the important elements of the UK show is that it is geared specifically to a Saturday evening family audience (I think it’s on around 8pm?), not a “late Tuesday night” audience. The original is extremely successful but would utterly tank in a Tuesday-at-10 slot, so I suspect NBC deserves a lot of the criticism here.

Mostly underwhelming, and a lot of the ‘clever’ dialogue and jokes fell flat. I did enjoy the clips of NPH stalking the couple from Tuscaloosa, and I literally called my wife in from the next room during the karaoke bit because, stunningly, one of the families was literally in our town (in fact, there’s a family by that name in our neighborhood and I wonder if it was them).

Otherwise, pretty underwhelming. Carrot Top, really?

My kids really wanted to see it, so I was just screening it before letting them watch it on streaming. It’s fine for them but I don’t plan on watching any more.

Did your kids like it, Skammer?

Gee, I thought it was kinda fun. Uneven, sure. But certainly not something I’ve seen before.

And yeah, I loved the stalking bit.

I wonder how many of the segments will be present in the next episode.

They had after-school activities yesterday so I think they’ll be watching it today. I’ll bring back a report.

I quit after the climbing race with Witherspoon.

I didn’t go in expecting much but way worse than I’d imagined likely.

The stalking bit seemed like it should have been funny but it just fell flat because it looked so obviously staged. I mean, there was a camera in their car. Were we really supposed to believe that the couple were not in on the whole thing? If so, it was very poorly done.

And the kareoke singers being surprised by the “hidden cameras” yet then having a big handheld mic to sing into.

No way were they in on it. What would be the point of that? But obviously, family members were.

ETA: My kids liked it okay, but not nearly as much as America’s Got Talent.
