It was a compilation album I bought probably around 1980 or so. I went to college in '82 and I know it was before that, back in high school. 1980 or possibly '78 or '79.
It was a compilation of alternative punk/new wave stuff. This particular song was IMO ahead of its time and more hard core techno than the emerging new wave pop “turning Japanese” drivel emerging on the radio waves at the time.
Either the name of the song was “Shock” or the name of the band was “Shock.” The band members were dressed as scary overly makeup’d clowns. They were one of those bands who got together, made one hit song and promptly broke up I imagine. Actually, the song was never a hit per se, but I really liked it.
Any takers? What was the band? What late 70’s early 80’s compilation “new wave” album did they appear on?
Are you positive about the timeframe? I’m exactly the same age as you (started college in 82) and I barely remember this flash in the pan from a few years later:
If it’s not them you’re thinking of, I remember that the good folks at K-TEL had a virtual monopoly on the comp albums of our high-school days. That might help the googlage.
