Better Call Saul 2.01 "Switch" 2/15/16

This is starting to seem more and more like an episode of Lost.

I liked it. But there was too much going on-- I need to re-watch it and pay more attention. Great start, though!

When the pool boy asked Jimmy if he wanted another drink, did anyone catch the name he used?

“Would you like another drink Mr. ________ ?”

If I recall correctly, the close captioning said “Cumston”. I’m guessing that it was a play on “cum stain”.

Mr. Cumstun. I loved that. It’s probably spelled Cumstain.

This doesn’t really have anything to do with the plot or characters, but I loved that short bit in the beginning of the episode where the hummingbird buzzed the camera.

My thought exactly. Thanks for confirming, now I don’t have to watch it again On Demand (I pulled it up but fast forward was disabled).

He mentioned he didn’t know what it meant, he just liked saying “cocobolo.”

Confirmed on “Talking Saul” after the premier.

Please don’t tell me the number on his new office is 815…

Here’s how we see it: Dufous invests in some top tier baseball cards. Why else would he have instant access to print out his collection. Nacho shows up, trashes the place looking for whatever is of value and leaves with the cards. It’s doubtful Nacho expected to find any cash as he probably knows perfectly well that Dufous has probably spent every penny that he’s earned. Anyway. . Dufous arrives home and in a panic pulls out the sofa to make sure whatever he had stashed was still there or get it out of there in case the police really look. My guess is he had more drugs and or cash hidden.

Oh, what’s going to happen to cause Jimmy to lose everything he’s gaining? Good woman, good job, respect, especially respect.

Kim is the key. She may quit him if he slides into shady lawyering for drug dealers. (A promo has Mike saying something about having a job for him - maybe Hummer PLAYUH nerd, who doesn’t need back-up, will need a lawyer.)

Or something tragic happens to Kim. Because the only reason he walked into that Big Law office was to be near her. He’s crazy about her. Remember last season when he was going to rent that beautiful suite of offices (with Kettleman money), just so they could work together, giving her the best corner office. She turned him down. Later, he cried and kicked the door.

Loved the stock broker tequila scam dance between Jimmy and Kim … talk about foreplay. Kim seemed to have fun on the wild side. Loved the tooth-brushing scene, their playfulness, and how he makes her laugh.

Great cinematography … loved the overhead shots of Jimmy floating in the pool.

Loved his description of “the mark” in his message to Kim:

“Listen, as I speak, not 25 feet away from me, I’m looking at the mark. Think Thurston Howell III if he shacked up with Ginger. He’s dripping in Gucci. It’s like I’m at the watering hole, and I’m watching the fattest, slowest water buffalo expose his neck to me … Come, Kim. Join me. …”

But he knows she won’t.

Loved him ordering the cocobolo desk for his new office, and keeping the strange painting on the wall - an image I can’t find on Google, but it’s the work of Santa Fe artist, Miles Toland, an existing piece and not commissioned for the show.

Loved the office light switch thing - Jimmy will always try to work outside the system, no matter what. It’s his first instinct.

Yep, I loved “Switch” … Bob Odenkirk’s stellar performance is the heart of the series; and Gilligan/Gould can do no wrong, they really do hand-craft these episodes.

Now just have to get rid of this “Smoke on the Water” riff looping 'round my brain …

It wasn’t just that the area around the couch was untouched. The couch itself was also untouched, with even the throw pillows still neatly tucked into the corners.

Is there anything to suggest Ken was trying to con them, or does it appear he attempting to provide a legitimate service albeit one with a nice fat fee?

Perhaps it was what was contained in the box of cards beyond the cards themselves. Maybe there was a secret drug compartment. And if this guy could fire Mike, then he could be stupid enough to call the cops. I mean, he did get a pimp-mobile.

Why would Nacho kill the golden goose? He must have been doing well with the current arrangement. Maybe blackmail now and drugs for free?

That’s what I was thinking. Strongarm the pharmacy IT guy into being his drug pipeline. I’m still not clear on how Nacho gains by just robbing him, other than a one-time cash windfall. Which doesn’t make sense; the drug business depends on repeat business.

I had figured it was somewhere in between. That he’s not a scam artist, but he’s also not a wise, thoughtful financial planner who spends a lot of time thinking about how to best invest his clients’ money.

Yeah, when Nacho looked for the address, I had figured that he’d show up at the guy’s house late at night when he was there to prove that he can find him and hurt him, and get a better deal on the drugs. Or Nacho would try to cut out the middleman, by maybe getting the guy’s ID card so he can more easily break into the company and steal more drugs, although that’s not a longterm solution. They’ve shown Nacho to be fairly smart, he probably had some good reason to get the address.

I agree with that; I just can’t figure out the angle yet. It’ll be a great discussion topic for the Mrs. and I this week.

Thinking about it more, while it is true that the drug business relies on repeat business, it’s also pretty clear that the IT guy has little street smarts, and would get caught eventually. He has no experience with things like this, he’s buying the most obnoxious, expensive car possible on his IT salary, eventually he’s going to get noticed and the supply of drugs will end. So maybe Nacho is smart enough to get out early, and steal money or whatever else from him first, and then move on to a different resource.

How long before the start of BB was this? I know that the baseball card bubble has burst. I’m assuming that this is happening back during the bubble.

He was going to get caught as soon as his company did an inventory or audit, noticed the discrepancy and started to investigate. And now that the cops are onto him (they don’t exactly what he did but they clearly gathered that he’s dirty), the cops are going to realize that it’s not a coincidence that he works for a pharmaceutical company.
