Better Call Saul 2.08 "Fifi" 4/4/16

Jimmy is smart enough not to have sabotaged the papers in a way that will immediately get caught when they get compared to the originals on file back in the office, or anything like that. And note that he did a bunch of different papers, all consistently with each other.

My guess as to how he wants it to play out is that it ends up bringing Chuck’s “sickness” to light, making Chuck seem unreliable. He’s trying to take away the one thing Chuck holds most dear in the world, his ability to practice law and his unimpeachable reputation, because from his perspective, Chuck damaged the thing that Jimmy holds most dear in the world, Kim.
And frankly, it seems like it might well work. Everyone at HHM, who has dealt with Chuck’s space blanket and insane rules about watches and cell phones, has to be willing to primed for him to start losing it entirely.
Anyhow, I thought this was a fantastic episode. This show really takes its time, which would be irritating and tedious if it weren’t so damn good at it.

I don’t think Kim is making a bad decision in a general sense; striking a private practice is risky, but rewarding, and with Jimmy’s cash as a buffer it’s not that financially risky. Howard was surprised but envious, he clearly didn’t think it was a bad move other than being tied to Jimmy, which she was mitigating, and pretty much any solo lawyer follows something like that pass (zero student loans is a nice bonus too). It’s Jimmy’s craziness that makes it risky, but I think she has deep feelings for him and doesn’t view him objectively. In her head she clearly minimizes and dismisses stuff that he does, a lot like someone in an abusive relationship - so she’s only viewing the general side of risks, and not the ‘what if Jimmy comes up with a crazy scheme’ side.

I think for Howard it’s entirely business - Mesa Verde is cash coming in, and he likes Kim but she is a competitor now. Also, while I don’t think HHM is in danger of going bankrupt, I do think it’s enough money to worry about. He definitely didn’t want to lose the client, but I don’t think it was personal. For Chuck it’s clearly about Jimmy, though - Howard was clearly shocked that he was going to come in without doing the phone and lights thing, and I don’t think he’d do that if it was just money. Chuck did an impressive pitch, I liked Howard’s shocked look before he figured out what Chuck was doing.

What I think: it’s the paperwork for setting up a new branch, those addresses are going to be used for a lot of regulatory stuff, and regulators aren’t going to like the bank being wrong about its new location. It will also probably affect building permits and other local info, because that will give them a chance to have construction at the wrong site which will look good on screen. None of it will actually derail the new branch, but it will create costly headaches and (in Jimmy’s head) make MV regret choosing a sloppy firm like HHM.

Also, I don’t think those are just Chuck’s copies, I think those are the firm’s master copies that Chuck is working on getting ready for everyone else to use. They mentioned having someone bring him the documents, so I think he’s got the only or master copy that people will use for reference.

He washed the hose and wore gloves when he put the nails in, so there aren’t any fingerprints on the hose. It’s much safer to just have a clean hose than to mess with some weird false flag operation when Hector isn’t going to call the police anyway. Also, I don’t think he needed a second set of hands, her ‘help’ was fun for her but didn’t really add anything - he can certainly mark the hose himself, and he had to drill most of the holes on his own.

Forgiving her tuition was particularly nice, though offset slightly by being on the phone to Mesa Verde before she’s even out of earshot.

The looks he got walking through the building were a stark contrast to the ovation he got when he arrived in his space suit in Jimmy’s ancient car.
Michael McKean deserves an Emmy for this role.

I’d forgotten about him washing the hose and using gloves, but you are right, he’s not using his granddaughter’s fingerprints for any reason. It was just likely he was babysitting and needed to work on the hose anyway, and thought she would enjoy helping. It was a cute bit.

But Chuck didn’t do anything on the documents did he? I thought he just had them to review them, Howard wanting Chuck’s notes, but Chuck deciding to go into the meeting.

But you’re right in that it could end up leading to Chuck’s “illness” being discovered by Mesa Verde and other clients. Like the screw-up is discovered, and a meeting is called, and Chuck has to be there for whatever reason, and he isn’t able to prepare mentally to go in, and he’s stressed out about the mistake and thinking that it’s Jimmy’s fault, and freaks out or collapses.

I don’t have any problem with Howard calling Mesa Verde right away, it’s just business. I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect people running a law firm to just hand off a profitable client, especially when they probably are the better choice for an expanding bank. I’m actually surprised there’s not a non-compete that would bar her from stealing them away, but that would get in the way of the showdown Jimmy has dragged Kim into.

I wonder if they will be able to pin this on Jimmy, but he’ll convince Chuck to take his offer of “if you let this go, James McGill will never practice law again”, then weasel out with Saul Goodman.

I saw it as pretty clearly a riff on the opening shot in Touch of Evil. Er, minus stuff blowing up, of course.

Is there some legal implication to changing the address on those documents? It makes the firm look a little sloppy perhaps, but Mesa Grande will know what mail to expect and it will get corrected otherwise. But if it invalidates some kind of financial filing that would send them back to Kim immediately.

I’m having a deed done in real life now and since it’s rural property it’s one of those “NE 1/4 of NE 1/4 of the SE 1/2 of the SE 1/4 of the NW 1/2 of the SW 1/4 of Parcel X Township Q Range 8” type things. Super easy to make a mistake or a typo, and per my lawyer while it’s better NOT to make a mistake it’s not that terribly difficult to amend if it gets filed that way and in fact happens a lot. It costs a few dollars and takes a bit of time but that’s the only problem.

I’m wondering if there’s something specific about that address- perhaps it’s a porn shop or something. Or perhaps you just saw a fraction of what he did in doctoring the deeds.

I think fundamentally we don’t know and can’t know, and whatever ends up happening, it might not fully align with real world law. Suffice it to say that Jimmy is a very smart guy and a lawyer, he wouldn’t have put in all that effort and risked discovery just to make HHM waste a few days amending some paperwork with no further impact.

That’s what I assumed, but it seems to be a weak foreshadowing, if what is considered a typo breaks bad for someone it’s been overplayed in the episode, if there’s greater repercussions to the change it’s underplayed. But this thing could go off in any direction, and maybe it’s even a McGuffin.

The cold (helado) open was magnificent. 4 minutes of one continuous shot. Bravo!

And the Dog House - Jesse Pinkman’s favourite eatery - is back. Yay!

I also liked Fifi.

The shop where the ice cream was delivered is El Griego Guiñador - Is there any particular connotation or meaning of “Winking Greek” or “Greek Winker” that I’m missing?

I just had a thought while reading through this thread. I think we’re all enjoying this show, especially the slow build up leading to it’s inevitable end. I mean, we all know where this is going, we all know the fate of Jimmy/Saul/Gene.

But what if we didn’t?

What if this was a brand new series (without the present day scenes that have begun every season) how would we respond? Not about whether it’s good or not, it would still have the awesome writing and acting, but how would we, as viewers, wonder where it’s all leading?

I’m sure that after the whole thing is done and over with, some people will ‘watch it in order’ rather than watch it as it was released. It’ll be tough to get an unbiased opinion out of them unless they did it by accident. That is, watching BCS without knowing it has anything to do with another show.

Have they shown Pollos Hermanos anywhere yet?

I’m expecting Mike’s show ending could be him sitting down at a Pollos Hermanos and Gus sitting across from him.

My guess is that those are the firm’s original documents for the case, and that they’re being handled on paper to start with because Chuck won’t use a computer. Once Chuck finishes whatever he’s doing, these will be the reference they come back to when filling out paper docs or entering them into a computer. They won’t be sending much mail to Mesa Grande, but they will be sending filings for the expansion into the depths of the federal and state bureaucracy, and they’re going to confirm the address with the original if there are any questions, so it’s all going to get stuck. I expect some kind of construction at the wrong site just because it would make a good scene, though the regular property documents are usually easy to fix.

It’s not going to be anything that shuts the bank down, but may delay the expansion and definitely makes HHM look like rank amateurs if they can’t get something so simple right.

I wonder if Regalia Helado smuggles meth the same way that Pollos Hermanos did (i.e. with infrared coding on particular containers) and Gus took over/improved the existing system.

(I liked Gus so much better than Walt.)

Random thought:

Didn’t Kim say she was originally from a small town on the Nebraska/Kansas border?

I wonder whatever Kim’s fate is, if she’ll end up back in her hometown someday. Maybe take a small trip to Omaha… Stop in at a Cinnabon…

He would eat it.
