"Beware gay negro inspired rock music and other evils" warns father of 70

As I may have mentioned before I have a borderline obsession with apostate-Mormon polygamous cults, particularly with the one in the bordertown of Hildale, UT/Colorado City, AZ (formerly known as Short Creek) portrayed in the recent bestseller Under the Banner of Heaven*. Currently ruled with an iron grip by Warren Jeffs.
Jeffs and his priesthood (consisting mostly of his half-brothers and other bootlicking male relatives- the community is incredibly inbred, so much so that there is a cemetery for babies who have died of birth defects in recent years) have such a demand for very young wives (the number of Jeffs wives is unknown, but the most conservative estimate is more than 30, most of them married either after being taken from an excommunicated husband or as child brides of 15 and younger; the number of children is unknown as well but is upwards of 70) that dozens of young boys have been excommunicated in recent years for the flimsiest of reasons (going to a movie theater, watching a television set while in town, etc.- heresy is what Jeffs says it is). Jeffs almost never sets foot off of his walled compound (which includes the temple of his congregation) as numerous deputies and process servers are waiting to serve him with papers and possibly arrest him for a variety of charges ranging from tax evasion to child molestation and sodomy of both male and female adolescents. (Law enforcement fears entering his compound may trigger another Branch Davidian style situation.) When he does leave it is usually in extreme secrecy to check the progress of the compound he is building in Eldorado, Texas.

Anyway, some secretly recorded tapes of his sermons (made by a defector who smuggled them into the sanctuary in a hollowed Book of Mormon have recently been made public and they are absolutely fascinating. He goes on about the evils of the homosexual-Negro-drug-addict inspired Beatles music [a reference to Little Richard’s claim that Epstein offered him a percentage of the Beatles to promote them), how negroes survived the Flood through Ham’s wife, and other stuff. It’s absolutely fascinating, even moreso when you consider how total the devotion of his hardcore followers is to his every word. If you find mind control, cults, polygamy or anything related fascinating, give these a listen.

*Other good reading:

Predators, Prey and Other Kinfolk, a memoir by Dorothy Allred Solomon (she adored her father, who had 47 other children, but is herself a monogamist and resentful of her family’s cult; she previously wrote In My Father’s House which I also recommend [first read it when it came out 20+ years ago- it has some of the same tales as the new one but is a different book] but it is out of print.)

Blood Covenant by Rena Chenoweth, one of the many wives of Ervil Lebaron and the assassin of Allred-Solomon’s father (she was acquitted, then told all in her book, then lost a megamillion dollar lawsuit [she was penniless- it was a matter of principal] to the Allred family)

The fluff magazine Details recently had an excellent article on some of the “Lost Boys”- male youths who have been excommunicated and turned into a modern world they know nothing about (e.g. can’t drive, have never seen a computer or a television, address black people to their face as n*ggers because they honestly didn’t know it was rude) and who have often turned to drugs, prostitution, suicide, etc… Depressing but very good article- unfortunately it’s not available online.

You’d probably find this fascinating, then. There’s mention of the Jeffs, and the Kingston families.

Yeah, those people are very interesting…and very, very sad. Here’s one about the Lost Boys.

The priest molestation scandal in the Catholic church pales in comparison to these sick bastards. And please note-I’m not attacking anyone in a consentual, polygamous or open relationship-just these cults of fundamentalist mormons and other religions who use it as a way of exploiting women and children. If people want multiple spouses and/or partners, fine. But not like this. Never likes this.

Why is it that these guys who have 20+ wives are not remotely good looking or sexy? Ick and double ick.

Sampiro, we should start a club. I just finished Under the Banner of Heaven (one of the more disturbing books I’ve read in a while), and was looking for more on the same subject. I’ve bookmarked this thread so I can listen to those lectures when I have more time.

This guy (and his ilk, for that matter) is a straight-up nutter, and any “religion” that makes a doctrine out of child-rape has problems, IMO.

Shirley, I think the reason these guys go into groups like this is that they can’t get chicks on the outside. That has to be part of it. Why else would you make up such a nutty “theology” – one which has as one of its fundamental tenets that you have to have lots of wives and lots of kids to get into heaven – unless you were looking to score?

Jeffs took over leadership of the cult when his father Rulon died a few years back. (Rulon was in his early 90s, had about 18 widows [ranging in age from 90 to teenaged] and about 60 children [in age from 70s to teenaged- Warren was far from the oldest but managed to take over].) One of his first sermons afterwards was a manic cry for people to “keep your hands off my father’s wives!” (he was afraid that marrying the wife of a dead leader could give a bit more legitimacy to a rival’s claim*) whereupon he quickly descended into increasing paranoia, dissolved most of the advisory groups, etc., and has ruled pretty much solo surrounded by yes-men ever since.

The Kingston family is fascinating because they’re both the richest and most inbred of these lots. One member, Paul, is married to at least two of his half-sisters (as well as other women) and forced his 15 year old daughter-niece to become the 13th wife of his half-brothers (her full uncle and thus her uncle on both sides). When she ran away he literally whipped her in front of other members of the family. (She got away and it’s a nasty legal situation in Utah at the moment, with the law enforcement agencies not pursuing it very vigorously due to fear of armed standoff and a near impossibility of getting to the leaders of these cults without one.

Estimates of how many people are involved in these cults range from 100,00 to upwards of 250,000. One of the gazillion hypocrisies is that the U.S. government is the incarnation of all evil to them, but they receive millions per month over several states in welfare/food-stamp/public assistance from “evil government tax dollars”. The horrible part is that the women are brainwashed from infancy that not to submit will send them to hell, and by the time they learn that maybe the elders are all whack-jobs they’re 25 and married with a house full of inbred children. (In Dorothy Solomon’s book she referred to letters she received after her book came out asking her such things as “my father says it is his right and duty to lie with his virgin daughters did your father do this** I don’t think it is right” in childlike handwriting and pleas not to reply to the address listed.)

Anyway, fascinating topic. There’s going to be a major showdown at some point that can’t but be bloody; moreso than the Davidians these people have spent their lives being told one day the Government will come for them and it will be Armageddon, and there’s no telling how many weapons they’ve stocked since the last great “plyggie” roundup in 1953 (which was completely peaceful but resulted in public outcry due to the pictures of terrified women and children being herded into paddy wagons).
*I don’t know if there’s a term for this, but it’s a literally ancient concept: possessing all or some of the women of a previous leader increases your position. (Happens frequently in the Bible- Absalom taking his father’s concubines, then his half-brother requesting Abishag, etc…)

**Her father, Rulon C. Allred, didn’t- he was in most ways a very decent and loving man to his 8 wives and 48 children, though his family had many dysfunctions.

“Y…M…C…A, I want to stay at the YMCA…”

How utterly fascinating. I have to read some of these books at some point; there’s something so compelling about these crazy separatist cults.

It’s sad really, I was friends with a couple of members of the FLDS Church years ago, and they were nice, friendly people. A Little Amish in their dress and attitudes and definitely insular, but not this wacky. They embraced polygamy, but they still participated in inter-school activities, like the model UN and other youth groups (which is how I met them), and they generally integrated well. One young woman in particular was bright, charming, well-read, and very up on all the latest news, despite the stereotypes of what the daughter of a man with 7 wives is supposed to be like.

It sounds like things have gone waaaaay downhill as Rulon aged and died. I understand that, as he aged, his son slowly took over and imposed his own paranoid ideas, including pulling members of the sect out of public schools.

I’m not remotely good looking or sexy, and I don’t even have one wife! :frowning:

Those Wacky Mormons are a-movin’.
This is just fascinating in an anthropological way. I spent way too much time yesterday reading the above links.

They’re not just moving to Texas - they’ve established a little spot for themselves in Colorado, too.

Brand new compound

Jeffs’ voice reminds me of a cross between Hal 9000 and Bill Frist. Eerie.

Rulon Allred (I’m not sure why so many of the differing cultists are named Rulon- I assume it was a polygamous leader of many years ago) was a relatively educated man (he was a chiropracter who illegally delivered babies, set broken bones, prescribed herbs, etc.) who other than for their enormity and poverty you wouldn’t mind having as neighbors. The man who had him killed, Ervil LeBaron, was a total nutjob (from a family of nutjobs: one brother was arrested for public bestiality, another for doing pushups in the middle of a SLC street at rush hour) who slapped one of his wives for getting on his nerves with her “moaning” while she was in labor, had one of his own daughters killed, and died while writing a hundreds-of-pages long handwritten document that was a combination of gospel and hitlist. That was when the entire situation really started nosediving into totally separatist backwards desert dwellers.

An exception was one of Allred’s many sons-in-law the oddball polygamist Alex Joseph (picture ), who was born Greek Orthodox, insisted that his wives attend college, was a self-made millionaire and highly decorated Vietnam vet, acknowledged some parts of Mormonism and completely ignored others (he was a heavy smoker, for instance- died of liver cancer at 62) and had 20+ wives during his lifetime, though only 7 were still married to him at his death. He always carried a pistol due to the violence in some of the cults but was himself a peaceful man, and though he became betrothed to one of his wives when she was 9 the youngest woman he ever married (that one) was 19 at the time of their union. Oprah Winfrey visited his compound and was amazed by how intelligent and educated many of his wives were (several were professionals and several didn’t even grow up Mormon [mainstream or fundamentalist] and how happy the entire family seemed.

OTOH, he’s by far the exception, and even then you must question the sanity of a man or a society that bethrothes a child to a man in his late 40s.

Cool timing. This just in from NPR (well, actually it’s a day old but I just heard it.)

They say the birth defects in the Kingston family are so bad one child was born with:
two vaginas
two uteruses
But no outside genitalia.

And they supposedly have a family plot on their land that’s full of deformed stillborns.

Weird coincidence. A guy at work today showed me a bunch of links to old WJ and his bullshit.
