Beyonce

Dancing like a stripper makes me think you don’t have that much confidence in your own talent. Ditto dressing like one. And, yes, I’m aware that it’s all the rage - all the girls do it!

I’ve always wondered how such performers sing while dancing vigorously enough to be breathing hard and sweating by the end. I think they all do some lip sinking, to be honest.

Give me an Adele anyday. Now that’s talent. Proves you don’t have to be, skinny, dancing, and barely dressed to make it, or to please audiences! I really can’t wait for the whole stripper inspired crap to finally pass. It never really appealed to me and I won’t be sorry to see it go.

The issue isn’t whether the darker-skinned can succeed in the music biz, the issue is why of the three in Destiny’s Child it’s the “high yellow” one that gets embraced as the media darling. To pick a phrase from Hova…

Well, Beyonce’s back story is such that her parents were the one running the show. So it wasn’t hard for them to position her as the star of Destiny’s Child.

But in my culture, we don’t pay much attention to lightskin/darkskin. So when the media makes a big deal about it, I usually have no idea what the hell they’re talking about. Maybe they did make Beyonce their darling because of her skin. Hell, I don’t know.

I think the Dibs is right. I wasn’t gonna go there, but there ain’t no way in hell you’re going to convince me Beyonce is prettier or more talented than Kelly, primarily because I have eyes and ears. We know why she was the frontwoman for DC (her parents were running the show), but some folks just seem to like light skinned black women more than dark skinned, dark haired women. So I watched the (very meh-tacular) Super Bowl performance, and dude, Kelly worked it. I mean, she’s less over the top in general than Beyonce (so is Cher), but she was gettin’ it. Michelle on the other hand, yeah, she looked like she was late for her nap.

Yeah, I concede that you guys are probably right. The media kills me with the lightskin/darkskin stuff.

In my hood, dark skinned (or dark skinded, as we like to say) girls are admired all the time, are very pretty and there isn’t a lot of ‘you are more prized because you are light skinned’ stuff going on. So when this stuff comes up on the internet or on t.v., I just sit back like the audience. I can’t contribute properly to that conversation.

Missed the edit window, but, let’s post some music.

Kelly’s Motivation(I hate Lil’ Wayne, but love this song. If you can’t stomach lil Wayne, don’t bother clicking.

Solange’s I Decided.

Beyonce’s Ring the Alarm

Michelle singing her gospel music.

Let’s see…

No ability to play an instrument.
No ability to write music.
Music is manufactured.
Needs to be half naked to keep people’s attention.
Dancers on the stage (WTF?).
Ooks and eeks all over the stage.
Influenced by ©rap.
TNB on stage and in her personal life.
Yeah, she’s great.

And 20 years ago, 40 years ago, 60 years ago, and possibly even 80 years ago. The corollary to “90 percent of everything is crap” is “The genre of music/novel/movie/television show you grew up with is not an exception.”

 By contrast to music that grew organically out of the earth like a tree? :dubious:

IME, claims that certain music is manufactured or not “authentic” are usually leveled at pop music categorically, with the implication (or occasionally, refreshingly, stated outright) that all music should have a social conscience, or must express “deep”* emotions and ideas. Any music that’s intended to be just plain fun – “it’s got a good beat, and you can dance to it,” to quote someone whose name I can’t recall but I’m sure had to be a shallow young punk  – is mere fluff that has no business existing.

To dial back my snark and crank up the usefulness :p, give us examples of music you don’t perceive to be “manufactured.”
*Deep in this kind of analysis meaning “negative.” Sad or angry = deep; happy = stupid and shallow.

I’ll just leave this meme here. Seems appropriate in this here thread.

(warning: smartassery ahead)

Hot chicks singing unmanufactured music. Most of them pass the brown paper bag test.

Please, I know for a fact that each and every one of those birds was pushed out of the nest and onto the stage by a momager worse than the Kardashian matriarch. In fact, that Apus Apus? Totally has a night vision style sex tape.

She just announced a big tour that brings her to Chicago on July 17th. I think we’re going to try and get tickets.

Reported for racist slur…

Banned.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen her perform. Is she a certified diva?

BTW, I always have to try three times to get the name right.

Bee-onk-ee… no. Bee-won-see… no. Bee-on-say. It’s almost like every time I see it in print, I’m seeing it for the first time and have to figure it out.

Damn, I don’t know how folks stay up on the cutting edge of racial slurs.

Urban Dictionary, perhaps (I had to look it up)

She’s good, but nothing spectacular.

I don’t know too much about her but the impression i get is that she works exceptionally hard all the time, making the very most of what talent she has (which may not be an enormous amount). On that basis she has to be a good role mode, even if you don’t like the music or act.

They did do a medley of their hits. You missed it.

I seriously would love to die and come back looking like any of the women whose photos have been linked in this thread. Damn!
