This interview does not remotely help him. He sounds as bad as he did during the debate. He looks as tired and confused as he did during the debate. He didn’t give good answers to the questions, and he also made some very cocky claims that undercut the seriousness of this situation and make him seem lacking in self awareness. He’s just digging himself in deeper.
I’m not watching, but no matter how the interview goes, he needs to be out there on TV and in public. If he’s doing badly, hopefully this will help him realize it.
Let’s give him some more time, not just to evaluate his performance but so he can be convinced himself (if he really is no longer capable of campaigning well) and get fully behind Harris.
Fair enough, but that was 1 out of 3, and what’s worst of all is not scrolling up in your own link to see the pile of unintentional hilarity that was verifiably attributed to Quayle.
Anyway, we’re off topic here, so enough about Quayle. Some VPs have been underwhelming. I think Harris may well be quite smart, but she’s reportedly got other problems.
I thought the interview was to be an hour. Hmmm?
I’m glad it wasn’t.
he made a few weird statements, caught himself but he was very slow
How much more time?
If he decides he needs to drop out the sooner the better.
Personally, I think we are stuck with this and have to ride it out but he’s not looking like he has been getting better at interviews. And this from a guy who has spent a lifetime in politics. He’s as practiced as can be.
ETA: I wonder if Biden really thinks he is the absolute best candidate to take on Trump in this election? That the party can not have a better candidate than him.
TBH I was hoping that he would do poorly at the interview and that would help pursuade him to drop out. Harris is currently polling betting against Trump than Biden is. I think she’s very very smart but unlikeable. However, having seen her husband interviewed and how he talks about her I personally like her more. He’s an asset if she runs.
My guess is a week, two at most. If he’s not out by then he’s almost certainly going to stay the nominee.
From CNN reporting on the ABC interview:
“If the Lord Almighty came down and said ‘Joe, get out of the race,’ I’d get out of the race,” Biden said. He added: “The Lord Almighty’s not coming down.”
ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos responded: “I agree that the Lord Almighty is not going to come down. But if you are told reliably from your allies, and your friends and supporters in the Democratic Party, in the House, in the Senate that they’re concerned you’re going to lose the House and the Senate if you stay in, what will you do?”
Biden declined to answer the question. “It’s not going to happen,” he added.
Ok I watched the interview and he was typical Joe Biden. No obvious new cognitive problems. The ear wiggling was distracting but aside from that he appeared completely normal. I do wish he would take a cognitive test because refusing looks like he has something to hide. My hope is that he undergoes a private full cognitive assessment that he does not need to release publically but that if it shows problems may influence his family to convince him to drop out. If it shows no problems then he releases it to the public.
The Lord Almighty isn’t coming down but he might come calling. Seems like a bit of a “God couldn’t sink the Titanic” thing to say.
It is quite the dilemma. If Biden stays in and loses, we knew as of late June/early July that it was going to happen and we knew about an obvious solution.
On the other hand, if Biden drops out and his replacement loses, we are tossing aside the proven winner who is best qualified for the job and subbing in someone without nearly as much prep time, name recognition and logistical support from the party.
It would be nice if Trump would drop out. Trump is the reason we can’t have nice things.
Yes, but even Ron Desantis and Nikki Haley support all this extremism stuff.
“I’ll drop out only if God tells me to” (slightly paraphrased) is not the reassuring message we needed to hear from Joe.
A Democratic Party disaster continues to unfold.
‘And, spoiler alert: He won’t’ is positively Trumpian.
Perhaps if Democrats acted more Trumpian and stood by their candidates instead of abandoning ship at the first sign of smoke we might win some elections now and then.
Oh, jeez the ear thing. It’s obviously a tic.
People who stutter often have those. It’s a coping thing.
He does the sentence preface “Look”. I do that too. I either say “See here” or “Okay, now”
If you stutter it gives you time to make repairs to what’s fixin’ to come out your mouth.
But, he’s done that since, forever. I noticed it when he was VP.
Every time I see this I just think of all of the Republicans saying that we just needed to give trump time to come to grips with the fact that he lost the 2020 election.
Biden is a good man and has been a good president. But I wish he’d take an honest look at himself and at the state of the polling and make better decisions. I honestly believe that at this point the better decision is a heartfelt and gracious declination of the nomination and a glowing recommendation for someone to take his place. VP Harris is the logical choice, though I am no fan of hers. She can more or less seamlessly step into the opening with all of the fundraising apparatus transferring over to her.
I am hopeful he and Jill value the good of his country more than his ego.
(He doesn’t know if he’s watched the debate since?)
She’s already been fundraising and hitting the night show circuit.
All that should matter is whether he gave coherent answers that were responsive to the questions asked because we know Trump can’t.
I’m a little concerned. He wasn’t exactly sharp tonight. His biggest gaffe was when GS asked him if he had watched the debate, and Biden said something akin to, I don’t remember. Something like that. The exact quote escapes me now. And he also stumbled in trying to recall the name of the new British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer. He never did name him.
