Biden considering dropping out (Update: Biden drops out)

It absolutely will be a clusterfuck, because there’s zero chance of the entire party rallying behind Harris immediately. Every two-bit congressman looking to generate name recognition for themself and put themselves into consideration for a Cabinet office or ambassadorship is going to declare that they’re running for president and the convention is going to make 1968 look like a picnic in the park.

I wouldn’t even be surprised to see Republicans announce they’re seeking the Democratic nomination just to deliberately introduce chaos.

The fun part for me is this convention is a stone’s throw from where I live (ok, a little bit more but close enough). I could easily see the venue from my window if there wasn’t a building in the way.

A Black woman of Asian ancestry married to a white Jew…right. The opposite of a universally appealing candidate.

Is it too much to hope that the Democrats will put the the welfare of the country ahead of everything else? And see that massive internal divisiveness will hand the election to trump on a platter?

Why not rally behind Joe, get him reelected, and then ask him to resign? Anything to keep trump out of the White House again! Why can’t everyone see this?

Arrhghh! :person_facepalming:t2:

I see it! I do!!

I thought Biden brought the fire tonight. A million times better than his debate performance. He did make a few gaffes, but I have always chalked that up to him having overcome a stuttering problem. Plus, there are just some times when people mis-speak under the pressure of public speaking. It’s not the easiest thing to do.

I wish we had better options, but between Biden and Trump, Biden is clearly the best choice.

And my takeaway from the post-conference commentary? It’s such a sharp contrast between the two parties. The Democrats are NOT blindly lining up behind their candidate, and are voicing their concerns. The Republicans, meanwhile, can ignore every outlandishly vile thing Trump has ever done, and would absolutely never question his qualifications to hold office. That’s honestly frightening.

I’m with you on all you said. The question is whether Biden can deliver a win in November. That is very much in question. Which then makes us wonder who could win?

I am so tired of some dems believing it is “their turn” to run for president. Instead, they need to figure out a platform and a good candidate to deliver it,.

I doubt they ever will though. Each one wants the power.

NYT hates Biden? Biden is more newsworthy now?

True.

Are you allowed to say that here?

Yep. If trump had not won in 2016, Biden would likely not have gotten the nod in 2020- but the voters wanted someone safe, respectable, and trustworthy.

I cannot find it now but I read an article that showed a count of NYT articles lambasting Biden after the debate and articles noting Trump pretty much spewed bullshit the whole time (I tried but failed) . The “liberal” NYT was way, way, waaaaay pouncing on Biden more than Trump. By a very large margin. It wasn’t even close.

I’m not sure anyone can say the NYT is there to help Biden. Seems the opposite to me.

Your former remark was heard a lot on right-wing/Trumpist message boards back at about this time in 2020: “If by some chance, Joe gets elected (ha! unlikely to happen), he will only hold office for six months or so. ‘Thanks, Joe, for your decades of service, here’s your reward.’ Then, he’ll be expected to resign, and turn the reins over to Harris.” That didn’t happen, as we know, but it was a little funny watching them through subsequent years: “Okay, he’ll go a year. Okay, he’ll go two years,” and so on.

Regarding your latter remark, first of all, half the country doesn’t want to see it. They want to see Trump back in the White House. The other half probably do see it, but they disagree among themselves on how, exactly, to keep Trump out of the White House. Run Biden? Run Harris? Run somebody else? If so, who? Republicans seem united, but it’s these, and other, questions that are keeping Democrats divided.

No.

It wasn’t nearly that bad before primaries, with the exception of 1924. The big difference:

Biden - 3,896 delegates
Phillips - 4 delegates

So this convention will be a love fest inside the venue, despite whatever rioting goes on outside.

These delegates have heard wildly exaggerated stories about the horrors of a smoke-filled so-called brokered convention their entire political career. Such a possibility is described, in speculative news stories, every four years, phrased just like that. Those Biden delegates have been trained to have a horror of a convention that goes to many ballots and will be motivated to just have one.

I do not see the harm in three or four ballots, but I’m a Phillips voter, and we will obviously be wiped out on the first ballot.

If Biden drops out, and Harris runs, there almost surely will only be one ballot. If not, she wins on the second.

Trump is npt going to get WI. MI about 50/50 and PA is a little shaky for Democrats.

I heard this on the news this afternoon. To me, it seemed more than a simple gaffe. Biden is not going to get remarkably better over the next 4 years. He’s just not. He had a good 4 years, and now it’s time to pass the torch. Someone with great influence needs to have a word with him. Family?

I voted Phillips in the primary.

This is why the ticket needs to be Harris - Shapiro. Especially in the western part of the state, we still have proud Pennsylvanians who will change their vote because a popular governor is on it.

With a Biden - Harris ticket, PA is worse than shaky. Almost all Pennsylvania polls since March show Trump ahead.

In Ohio here, not sure my vote matters.
Not voting Republican ( unless somehow a new candidate arises) so not voting for Joe either.

Per the DNC rules, to be placed into nomination a candidate must submit a petition signed by at least 300 delegates, no more than 50 of whom may come from one state. A delegate many not sign more than one nominating petition. That’s going to rule out any two-bit Congressmen and definitely Republicans.

The vast majority of posters here want to do that. We just disagree about what would be doing that.

The majority of Democrats right now feel that it is the people in denial of Biden’s current state and low probability path to a win who are not putting the welfare of the country first. You feel differently.

To me it is telling that the people who have had close contact with him who are on the record saying not just the dodge that they will or do support his decision, but they want him to remain the candidate all have something to fear by saying otherwise. They work for the administration or they are at risk of being primaried.

Those who don’t have to fear speaking up who have had close contact, and those who will be impacted directly by a disastrous general election (swing district candidates) areleading the charge to get him step down.

These are people who are putting the country first, even if you disagree with their conclusion of how to do that.

I was working this evening and didn’t see tonight’s performance. Let’s assume is was adequate with usual Biden misspeaks only. You know who also did not see it? The voters who will be deciding this election. They will every future flub he makes though, played over and over again. They will see “I beat Medicare …” over and over again. He has very little chance to win them over. That debate was one of the few things they will see.

We need to keep Trump out of the White House. Why can’t everyone see this?!

Thank you.

I incorrectly posted before that we should have native sons and daughters, on the first ballot, to highlight possible veep choices. Doing that, I see, is now against the rules.

If Biden drops out, and Harris runs, it sounds impossible for her to not get the nomination on the first ballot. How boring :grinning:

As a secular American Jew I am very comfortable saying this out loud: too Jewish. Especially right now with Gaza as a wedge issue.

Harris being married to a Jew and step mother to Jewish kids (mamala) will be tolerated, especially as she has the voice of pressuring Bibi in the administration. Shapiro would push it over the edge.

Whitmer would be great but an all woman ticket may be a step too far too.

If Harris declined to run (I would be shocked) Whitmer-Shapiro would be killer.
