Oh, then I have no idea.
It’s the state-to-state correlations (as noted in wolfpup’s post). But they don’t show any of that data.
It does seem like they’ve really cranked up the influence of the correlations here. 538 in 2016 did give Trump a much better chance than most other models due to taking correlation into account. I.e., flipping 10 coins as heads is much more likely if they’re all welded together in the same direction.
Now Adam Schiff has gone on the record and publicly called for Biden to step aside.
What an asshole. All this does is hurt chances of defeating DJT in November and nothing to get Biden to leave the race.
The time to express “concerns” about Biden’s ability to win was months ago. This will only dampen voter enthusiasm and potentially suppress turn out.
While not ideal, I think there is plenty of time. A change would hurt in the moment, but be old news pretty quick.
Imagine what’s not being said publicly.
And 2/3 of Democratic voters want him to drop out.
We shouldn’t console ourselves that there’s been no post-shooting bounce for Trump. Biden’s numbers sucked before and they suck now. His approval sucked in February and it sucks now. His chance of winning sucked a week ago and it sucks now. He has less of a chance of winning than Hillary did in 2016 at the same point in the race. At this point the only people we can count on are die-hard Democrats, and that’s not enough to beat Trump. All the positive news for Trump continues to generate positive vibes his way for low-info voters. The only positive news Biden’s generated in the past week is that there are less Congressional Democrats publicly calling for him to step down. If you need an advanced degree in mathematics to figure out how the polls make this race slightly worse than 50/50 for Biden, and then justify that as “everything’s fine,” we’re fucked
Good lord, if Democrats can’t shake this race up, it’s going to be a landslide in November for the fascists.
ETA: maybe the politicians, who know a thing or two about politics, who are saying that Biden should drop out aren’t actually assholes and want what’s best for our country, and they are positive that Biden stepping aside is what’s best for our country. I don’t reckon Schiff made this statement on a dare.
Imagine multiple people stepping forward thinking they “deserve” the position. Imagine ad campaigns aimed at each other instead of Trump. Imagine finally picking one later this year and having a very limited budget and amount of time to concentrate on Trump instead of each other.
Imagine what happens next…and shudder.
But it is clear Biden has absolutely no intention of dropping out. All this blathering on and on is only going to hurt turnout. Joe said today the only way he would drop out is if a doctor told him he had a condition that made it necessary. (gift link)
His doctors have instead said he is
a healthy, active, robust, 81-year-old male who remains fit to successfully execute the duties of the presidency.
Unless/until that changes the smart play is to support him and work to get him reelected. The self sabotage certain party leaders are engaging in is self defeating and stupid.
I hear y’all. I just think it would be messy, then it would stop being messy - they would all rally around the nominee (just saw Haley give a speech at the RNC). But Biden will always be messy.
And just generally, re both candidates, is it too much to ask to have a President who can read a teleprompter? Is that too high of a bar? Neither nominee can do that. It’d be nice if our side could read a teleprompter.
There is new information from a few months ago. Biden possibly has deteriorated from a few months ago. The polling disadvantage is more clear than a few months ago. Yeah it would have been nice if Biden stepped aside earlier or we had a more full primary process, but if the Democrats best chance today is Biden to drops out there is no reason to make past mistakes impact current decisions.
If you do believe there is no chance that Biden drops out then I tend to agree that this will only hurt him. I don’t think that is true though. Biden has pride, but he has always been a good Democratic soldier. I still think their is a reasonable chance he will be convinced to step aside and if Schiff pushes him a little further in that direction it may be worth the risk of him not listening.
Yes, his approval sucked in February which is why I expressed concern at that time about possibly considering another nominee. It was in one of the other threads about the race. And you know what happened? I was dismissed by multiple other posters that it was too early to take the polls seriously because it was 9 months out from the election. Then 8 months was too early, then 7 months. Then he won enough delegates to wrap up the nomination and still the consensus was that polls were meaningless.
Now we are basically 3.5 months away from Election Day and suddenly everyone is worried because the polls haven’t changed. Well, too late to do anything in my opinon. But it seems there are plenty of people on this board and in the Democratic Party who think all out war with Biden and his people is the way to go.
Look, I don’t think chances are great at the moment for Biden to win but I DO think there is a chance it can be turned around. Even after all of this he is basically tied with DJT. IF the party unites around him and IF he manages to continue with the type of appearances he has pulled off recently then there is a decent chance he can win.
But the circular firing squad exemplified by Schiff et al is not going to bring about victory for Biden OR a replacement.
The best thing would be to apply this pressure in private rather than hashing it out in public. The only result of doing that I see is suppressing turnout and voter enthusiasm. THAT is the main thing the GOP needs in order to win. High turnout is their biggest enemy.
I think we are far enough out from an election that no one is going to care what Adam Schiff said by the fall.
So a Democrat who disagrees with you about electoral strategy isn’t just wrong, but “an asshole”? And having a large subset of Democrats hear you calling them assholes isn’t going to dampen their enthusiasm to vote? Way to build that party unity, dude.
This seems to be a strawman. At this point I’m not seeing anyone important arguing for anything other than an orderly pivot to Harris in the event that Biden withdraws.
What a ridiculous statement. Schiff and those calling publicly for Biden to step aside are doing far more to dampen enthusiasm and hurt party unity than anything I, as some person on a message board, could possibly do. But hey, thanks for thinking I have that level of influence.
We don’t know that they didn’t try private pressure first, and now are finding it necessary to turn up the heat.
I think you are putting way too much weight on Biden’s public insistence that he isn’t going to drop out. That’s what politicians in his situation always say, right up to the minute where they drop out.
I have seen multiple people, on this message board and elsewhere, argue that we should have a primary to decide on the candidate.
Given Biden has already secured the delegates needed to get the nomination there isn’t any “orderly” way to dislodge him. Sure, there would be any easy way to pivot to Harris if he withdrew but at this moment it is unlikely in the extreme that will happen.
When we get word Obama is having a private meeting with Joe then possibly we will see him withdraw. Until then, no chance.
Not actually talking about you individually, of course. But there are lots of people saying similar things all over social media. Biden supporters who are in high profile positions have also been very hostile and dismissive toward those calling for him to step down. On the other hand, those calling for him to step down have been unfailingly respectful of him, and have consistently declared their intention to campaign and vote for him should he remain the nominee. I’m not going to go looking for cites, but my impression has definitely been that most of the hostile and divisive rhetoric has been coming from your side, both on this board and in the world at large.
