Biden considering dropping out (Update: Biden drops out)

Why in the world do people say things like that? Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by two million and came within a few tens of thousands of votes of winning the Electoral College! Obviously being a woman isn’t an insurmountable barrier.

Look how qualified she is and who she lost to.
In any reasonable and enlightened place she would have absolutely romped home.
By any objective standard she was the better candidate by a country mile.

One member confirmed to ABC News the accuracy of the following comments from Biden aimed towards Crow:

“You saw what happened recently in terms of the meeting we had with NATO. I put NATO together,” Biden said.

"Name me a foreign leader who thinks I’m not the most effective leader in the world on foreign policy. Tell me! Tell me who the hell that is! Tell me who put NATO back together!’ he said.

“Tell me who enlarged NATO, tell me who did the Pacific basin! Tell me who did something that you’ve never done with your Bronze Star like my son — and I’m proud of your leadership, but guess what, what’s happening, we’ve got Korea and Japan working together, I put AUKUS together, anyway!” he said.

“Things are in chaos, and I’m bringing some order to it. And again, find me a world leader who’s an ally of ours who doesn’t think I’m the most respected person they’ve ever—” he said.

Holy fuck. If you asked me which recent American President said that, I would not have guessed Biden.

Let’s assume this is the case. If it is, why do you suppose that so many prominent Democrats, whether elected representatives or major donors, have asked for Biden to step aside? It could be as simple as that they have reached a different conclusion. IMHO there’s another aspect in play that hasn’t yet been discussed in this thread.

Let’s say he does, and Harris is the replacement. If she loses, then ‘28 is almost certainly going to be a good year for the Democratic nominee, and Harris won’t be a factor in that. If Biden stays and wins, however, that leaves Harris as the favorite in ‘28. It also means ‘32 is likely to be a bad year for Democrats regardless of whether Harris wins or loses in ‘28.* That means that any Democrats with presidential ambitions are likely going to have to wait until ‘36 for a good opportunity to win the presidency should Biden win this year.

Is this a factor in what’s going on? I think behind the scenes it could very well be.

*. Scenario 1. Biden wins ‘24. Harris wins ‘28. By ‘32 we’d have had 12 years of a Democratic POTUS giving the Republicans the advantage.

Scenario 2. Harris loses in ‘28. Democrats have to run against an incumbent Republican, giving the Republicans an incumbent advantage in ‘32.

How long until the talking point at the GOP convention is that Trump is here after shrugging off a bullet, while Biden cancelled an appearance upon catching a case of the sniffles?

Can we blame it on COVID? [gift link from WaPo]

  1. Because the Democratic party has been self-sabotaging for decades now with its constant fear of defeat, second-guessing its own platform the second it attracts any criticism, and refusal to actually act on progressive principles unless it’s watered down to uselessness in the hopes of appeasing corporate donors and Reagan Republicans who no longer exist
  2. Because they’re trying to punch their own meal tickets instead of working for a better country

If she loses (which she will) there’s a good chance we’ll all be in concentration camps by 2028.

The fact that (some) Democrats are talking about their plans to run in 2028 and 2032 if Biden loses this year shows that they do not, in fact, consider Trump to be an existential threat to democracy.

Someone who truly believes that a Trump win in 2024 would mean 2024 is the last election ever wouldn’t be making such plans.

What did he say that isn’t true? His predecessor tried to destroy NATO and our other alliances at Putin’s command, and he’s been repairing the damage.

I can agree with you on that.

I for one will vote for the Democratic ticket if they dig up and run the reanimated corpse of LBJ. Any one but DJT.

You could truly and rationally fear such an outcome, and still make plans. What else can you do?

Also, you can plan on running in 2028 after a Biden second term. Or in 2032 after a Harris presidency. The future plans are perhaps based on avoiding a catastrophe in 2024.

Then they are fooling themselves. Trump himself will tell you he’s going to be a dictator on Day One and that he wants to purge 5% of the US population and put Democratic politicians in prison for defying him. He’s not going to stop there.

And yet, if she becomes the Democratic candidate, she will suddenly become the most left person in the entire Democratic Party.

Regarding Schiff and his public statement: I don’t see any here appreciating who the target audience was. It wasn’t Joe Biden. It was I am fairly sure aimed at getting the DNC to delay nominating him, and it succeeded.

Party leaders were planning on nominating him by virtual roll call as early as next week. That pretty much cements him in place. This public pressure has moved it to the slow roll, giving the behind the scenes campaign a chance to bear fruit.

Regarding Covid. Reports are it’s mild and I have no reason to disbelieve. But it does give a face saving opening if he has some mild heart inflammation as a Covid complication with his doctor advising that he should reduce his physical demands for a period of time. The demands that an active campaign would entail …

Based on your posting in this thread you have a massive fear of defeat to the point where you are willing to self sabotage if any human being other than biden is on the ballot.

I remember when Republicans claimed John Kerry was the most liberal member of the Senate.

Bernie Sanders was a senator at the time.

I’m not the kingmaker here. Biden will win this election unless Democratic insiders continue to sabotage him.

Unless they don’t and he still he doesn’t win

We would all love to see Biden get reelected, but your confidence that he will seems misplaced

They already are. That’s why this thread exists.

Oh this is brilliant. So if Biden stays in and loses it’s because people called for him to step down and if Biden steps down and his replacement loses, it’s because people called for him to step down.
