Biden considering dropping out (Update: Biden drops out)

Well, that’s clearly obvious.

If it can be translated, then it is not gibberish.

Which is clearly not what he’s saying, but perhaps you should pitch that angle to the New York Times and they’ll have eight stories about it by tomorrow morning.

“Tell me who else has the kind of record I have”. The meaning is clear enough.

To compliment the person he’s speaking to.

Why shouldn’t he be?

You keep saying Biden is the “only” one who can beat Trump.

A) You cannot possibly know that (no one can).

B) Clearly many in his party do not agree with that assessment. Are they all dupes of the media?

No, that is not at all what’s being said. The President had a bad debate, and because, “if it bleeds it leads,” (and makes us oodles of money?) the media has breathlessly opined about it every single day several times a day. No matter how well he performs all they show is the one or two flubs, and endlessly speculate on what it means. Whats wrong with him, when he will resign. On and on etc. etc. I don’t really know their motives; i guessed money above. It’s probably mostly just part and pacel with modern reporting. However, it has driven this boederline Biden has to go frenzy. Over a cliff.

A phrase repeated a great deal in this thread.

Fine.

Everyone has a bad day. What has Biden done since to convince people it was just that one bad night? That he’s owning the repugs?

Some of them are and some of them are choosing to believe that the media has duped too many people for the election to be winnable.

He has continued to campaign. He has addressed the nation from the Oval Office. He has lead a NATO summit and an Indo-Pacific summit. He has held press conferences. He’s sat down for interviews. He has continued to execute the office of President of the United States unfailingly even while sick with covid. What more do you want of him?

Guardian reporting that Rep Dan Costa (CA) and Senator Tester (MN) have just called for Biden to step down. WTF? It’s the middle of the night.

As shown in this very thread it really doesn’t matter what he does: scripted? Come on can’t he talk without a teleprompter?
Unscripted? He mixed up two names! Senile!
Interview? Softball questions from a “friendly,” network.
Unscripted remarks in at labor union event? What labor union event? Heh, probably a set up.

Oh and the ever popular, he looked ed tired/sick/ confused/old/pale/did we say OLD?
He spoke too slowly. Took too long to answer.
He spoke too fast and slurred.
He didn’t think about his answers.
On, and on and on.
Not all this stuff was claimed in this thread, but I’ve seen them on this board and from the non-stop media and talking heads onslaught.

As a Nate Silver acolyte, I have to preface this by saying we should never overreact to a single poll, but damn. New Emerson (highly reputable pollster) poll says:

When asked who they would vote for in a matchup between Trump and a younger Democrat, 53.7 percent of swing state voters said they would choose the younger Democrat.

That is a significant difference from the current matchup between Biden and Trump where only 41.6 percent of voters said they would support Biden.

This part sucks, though:

Emerson College Polling found that 57 percent of voters do not believe Harris has “earned the right” to be the next nominee with 66 percent saying they would like to see leading Democrats debate one another before the party selects a nominee.

Fuck. We might actually have to do this.

The problem is most party politics means there are a list of people who feel they have put in their time and are “owed” the spot on the ticket. And they have connections to help them along. And they tend to be old.

There is little room for an eloquent and charismatic candidate who is “young.” Obama was close to that when he won. Is there another? (Michelle Obama? That’d make republican heads explode.)

Here’s some more of my opinion. A bad debate was what Obama had against Romney. This was on another level. Biden wasn’t just stuttering. He slurred his words, changed topics mid-sentence and talked nonsense.Yes he has made gaffes before but this was on another level. He wasn’t able to counter anything Trump said. He looked and sounded confused. Yes he was sick and tired but he also had six days to rest and prepare. I am the biggest Biden supporter there is. I started a thread about how his administration has exceeded all of my expectations. However, as a physician, I was greatly concerned. I have been watching him lately and he seems improved but not completely back to his usual self. I do trust people who say that this is not the first time that he has had these episodes and I do worry about his ability to do the job for 4 more years.

It’s a very delicate situation.

Forbes currently lists Newsom, Pritzker, Whitmer, Polis, Shapiro, Sanders and Booker as being still publicly on the Biden wagon. Buttigieg has been ambivalent and Klobuchar has “questioned” Biden’s candidacy.

I dunno. Maybe we all need to take a closer look at Dean Phillips. He did, after all, tell us so.

I mentioned this before:

AIUI the Biden campaign money cannot be given away and there is a helluva lot of it in their warchest. Only Harris can access that money with no problem if Biden drops out.

That alone will almost certainly cinch it for her. I am not sure there is time to be able to move that money to anyone else (or if that is even possible) and anyone else will have a helluva time raising the necessary money in the four months left.

Oh it always has been something that mattered and cratered a few past runs right out of the box. His current communication difficulties though are worse than that on the days that one hold up as “good” and on others into complete incoherence. At a time that the hole to dig out of is very deep.

Forbes article also notes that as recently as 2022 Sanders “didn’t rule out” running in the event that Biden chose not to run for re-election. I love you, Bernie, but read the room.

Me too and I agree. His time has passed. (I’d still vote for him before Trump but, to be fair, there are few people I wouldn’t vote for before Trump.)

One of these days people are going to have to believe her when she says she’s never running for office.

And it wouldn’t, BTW, because it’s exactly what they’ve been EXPECTING to happen.

I believe her but you never know…people can change their mind (IIRC Biden had no intention of running for 2020 but was convinced otherwise). Still…I would be absolutely shocked if that happened. Too bad though, I think she has the moxie for the job.

I didn’t say it as a serious consideration but I still think repugs would lose their collective minds and that’d be fun to see.

To be clear, I still think the best case scenario would be a smooth handoff to Harris, but not if it’s going to piss off the swing voters.

But hey, I looked at Phillips’ Wikipedia page, which was more than I did during the primary.

He’s a nepo baby and one of the richest members of Congress. Not good.

But his money comes from his family’s liquor distilleries, so that will piss off the Baptists. Cool.

He used to own Talenti gelato. That stuff is awesome! (Vanilla) Bean for Dean!!

He’s from the suburbs of Minneapolis, defeated a six-term GOP incumbent to win the seat for the Dems for the first time since 1958 and has been easily re-elected twice. Promising.

In Congress, he has voted in accordance with Joe Biden’s stated preference 100% of the time. Cool.

However, in 2023 he signed on as a sponsor of the Medicare For All Act, citing his experience as a father of a daughter with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and the financial strain of insuring his employees as a business owner. He did this despite the fact that his district includes the headquarters of United HealthCare. Hell yeah!

He’s Dear Abby’s grandson!!

He’s Jewish, which will piss off the anti-Semites. But he’s not really Jewish (he derives it from his adoptive father), which will piss off the Orthodox. Love it.

I don’t care for rich politicians in general, but there are a lot of positives here. Still, I find it hard to take a three-term Representative seriously as a Presidential candidate. Unfortunately for him, both of Minnesota’s Senators and its Governor are already Democrats, so he may have to wait a while for a chance to move up. However, he didn’t run for re-election in order to concentrate on his Presidential bid and will be leaving the House in January, so he may just be retiring from politics.
