There certainly is a lot of controversy among ex-Mormons about ongoing church membership. They get pissed when they are excommunicated, or they get pissed when they are still on the Home Teachers assignments list.
When I exlained to my bishop that I do not believe any of the supernatural claims of Mormonism, there was no talk of resigning or excommunication. Home teachers, missionaries, and church leaders are always welcome to come and chat and tell me how much they love me and bring brownies and even stay for dinner. When they realze that I may convert them before they convert me, they’ll probably stop coming. Until then, it’s nice to occasionally see some old friends.
After a couple of months the bishop stopped by unexpectedly to see if I had any second thoughts, and if I wanted my name removed from the membership lists. Nope, I don’t care whether I’m officially a Mormon or an Apostate. Nope, I don’t care if I get excommunicated. I am 100% certain that my standing with Gosh has nothing to do with my LDS membership status.
