Don’t want to create a debate. It seems that saying the church doesn’t have to coerce anyone because the doctrine does it, is like saying the government doesn’t force people to pay taxes, it’s the laws that do it.
The [local bishop] doesn’t have to coerce anyone because the [indisputable word of God] does it.
Your government / taxes analogy doesn’t work because from the perspective of Mormons, the local (and even the General) leaders don’t make the rules or enforce the rules; God does.
Thank you, Rhodes. I was trying to think of a way to say that, but you thought of it first. ![]()
Coercive God. Not an attribute I would normally make. But mleh.
I just rewatched the scenes in the convenience store on DVR and I am positive there is no coffee machine or coffee station. There is a hot chocolate machine next to a soft drink dispenser with a microwave nearby, that’s all.
I could tell more if I had a HD set, but the only brands I could make out on the soda machine where Sprite and HI-C, neither which contain caffeine. I could not make out the other brands they were only shown briefly, but I know that there was no Coke or Pepsi.
The cold drinks offered in the drink cases also seemed to be juices, water and Sprite along with plenty of milk. There was some Vitamin water visible in one of the cases briefly and one variety I spotted was one that I know contains caffeine (Energy), it has a bronze label and the drink itself is light orange…it’s visible briefly in the top right of the case when Adaleen enters the store from the back room.
Now I’ve gotta go get a life :).
My bad on the coffee maker.
I was watching the clips of the finale on the HBO website. Very mild spoilers but I’ll box them anyway:
-Barb buys an extremely “polygamy impractical” convertible
-Ben tries to woo Heather back and she tells him she loves him but accepts he’s a polygamist and therefore she’s not interested
-As Nikki tries to apologize to Cara Lynn in front of the group Bill puts an orange peel in front of his teeth ala Don Corleone, a probably red herring for those who know about the legend of the orange in the Godfather movies
My preferred ending is that Barb and Margie get out while they still can, Nikki go back to the compound which is the only place she has a shot at being happy, and Bill stay out of prison but otherwise end up dumped by his decent wives and consigned to Nikki. Teeny meanwhile becomes a quasi-mythological monster who stalks campers at a lake in numerous sequels while Frank and Lois are blessed with a miraculous geriatric pregnancy.
It seemed to me his wheels were spinning as to how he could work this to his advantage - so, very Frank like
I’ve been thinking that either Karl or Don ( or both ) will “Kill Bill”, but that’s probably just wishful thinking on my part.
I’ve become a very unsympathetic ear this season…lately I’m seeing Bill as just some guy who thinks God told him it was his religious duty to screw the babysitter and it takes the most selfish person in the world to hang your family and friends out to dry in pursuit of your right to believe in that God instead of the one that frowns on screwing the babysitter.
And c’mon, he did sleep with both Marge and Ana before marrriage even though it was against the religion and he “repented” but got to keep doing them…really…
If it wasn’t for the Juniper Creek plotlines giving some historical perspective to Bill’s views I don’t see how anyone could seriously view him as anything but a deluded perv.
