Big Love Jan. 26, 2009

What was Indian guy’s wife supposed to be? She talks about living in the Middle East and seemed to refer to Native Americans as something she wasn’t. Plus, she used the Yiddish word “meshuggenah” so I was a bit confused.

As for what the women get out of this…I always assumed that Nicki believed it because she’s been raised believing this and worse. Barb seems to be going along with it because she loves Bill so much, and maybe feels indebted to Nicki because of everything that happened (Nicki took care of Barb when she had the cancer). The way Barb talks about these things just sneaking up on her (plus her leaving for a while last season) make me think she really doesn’t want to be living this life, but she’ll do it rather than leave Bill/her kids.

I don’t really understand what Margene gets out of it. Her reaction in season one–resentful towards Nicki–and the fact that she wanted to make friends (i.e., Pam) made me feel kind of bad for her. It seemed weird that someone so young just wound up in this weird lifestyle. And she obviously knows very little about scripture (she had no clue how Mormons felt about Native Americans). Now she seems to totally embrace it, though. I really don’t understand why. To be honest, she was my favorite character before. Now she seems a bit…I don’t know, creepy. The way she’s so pro the family and Weber gaming and all.

I agree that Don needs to get a better lawyer and actually take action since he does have legal rights to his kids. And Smart Aleq, you’re right…while they talk about “OH NO, what if the world finds out,” Pam and Carl have found out and seem more or less okay. They don’t seem to like it, but they’re not burning crosses or anything.

Oh, another thing…either from this episode or the first one–does anyone remember when Nicki talks about how maybe Bill should just send her away. (Something that obviously happens at the compound a lot.) And Bill’s response isn’t that this would never happen, but that it’s a LAST resort? That kind of gave me a “WHOA” moment.

Bill can still be prosecuted for adultery (a felony in Utah), though it isn’t normally prosecuted except as an add-on for other sex crimes.

As for Don, even in Utah the courts would grant custody to a lesbian couple before a polygamist.

If it’s a false alarm I doubt this plot point will last more than an episode. If it’s not it’ll last the entire season. I wonder if she’ll get an abortion. She want’s to leave, not get tied down, and she’s already rejecting everything her parents taught her.

Don’t remember–I think it might have been part of settling with Roman/Albie about the whole Weber Gaming coup. I haven’t seen the last season since it originally aired, and that’s been a long time.

It’s not anal stimulation, it’s cleaning. She said he had a clogged vent, which essentially means his asshole was crusted shut. As you can imagine, that’s not healthy for them. So you have to go in with wet q-tips and clean 'em up, kind of like you sometimes have to shave around the rectum on long-haired dogs and cats.

Barb wanted more children herself, and also felt guilty that she was compromising Bill’s place in heaven by not giving him more.

Margene just wants a big, happy family, and she’s willing to put up with the religious stuff to get it. I don’t remember all the details of her childhood, but her mother is a miserable alcoholic who hit on Bill the last time she visited.

Margene strikes me as the kind of woman whose life happens to her.

Complete aside: Isn’t it known to occasionally SNOW in Utah? I mean, holy hell, they have better and more consistent weather than San Diego and you never see Margene in anything with actual sleeves.

I’m afraid I’m just as clueless - I know Mormons have some Cowboy Jesus story, but that’s about it. Can you give me a brief education?

Well, yes and no. I think she has been that sort of woman, but is trying to break out of that and take a bit of control over her life. Take that scene where she twisted Bill’s ear to make him get off her–I think two years ago, or even a year ago, she would have just whined “but…but…Bill” right up until he knocked her up again. The old Margie wouldn’t have gone into that sports bar next to the dry cleaners and sold them 15 units, or spouted off to the Indian guy about stereotypes and prejudice. She would have just kind of drifted along in everyone else’s wake.

And I’m fairly sure all three seasons have been set in the spring and summer, so you’d expect Margie to be running around in summer clothes. The first season was toward the end of the school year, and the second season picked up about six weeks later. And it looks like this season is picking up almost a year after the end of last season–Margie had just found out she was pregnant, and now the baby is a few months old, they’ve gotten Teeny’s packing list for summer camp.

I don’t really know much except for what I learned on “South Park.” But I do know that they said that Native Americans are related to some tribe from Israel. And that they’re brown skinned because they’re bad and when they convert they’ll turn “white and delightsome.”

Its propaganda from some other church, but here a cartoon on youtube about Mormonism

Wow. I’m impressed. They’re showing a new one on Superbowl Sunday. Which I’ll still have to wait to watch, but oh well.

I don’t know anything about this, but aren’t the two moms just as “guilty of polygamy” as Don?
