Has anyone else begun to lose interest in this show?
I used to enjoy it, but this season has really turned me off. There is just too much going on that stretches the limits of reality. I know it is supposed to entertain, and weird story twists are part of all TV series, but
Bill would actually run for a state senate seat, as a polygamist, knowing that his life would be torn apart like never before? Is this really a believable story line?
Bill runs a Home Improvement chain store, yet he never seems to be involved with it. With 3-4 stores, I’m thinking this is a full-time + job, and yet he never works late, never brings work home, and doesn’t seem to have any stress with it.
He’s also been able to open a casino in his spare time. His time-management skills must be fantastic!
He seems to have sex every single night. A nice thing to be sure, but how in the hell does he a) get the energy, b) have the time, and c) have any skin left on his dick?
I have more points… but this is enough to get the topic started.
I don’t know… HBO is losing me this season. Does anyone else have similar viewpoints?
I was thinking about re-upping at HBO until I started reading the threads here. Learning that Bill had political ambitions – that was enough for me. It’s just too silly.
I can accept Bill as manipulative, hypocritical, and selfish – it makes the character interesting. What I can’t accept is all the supposedly intelligent, thoughtful people who fall under his spell.
Well, it’s been established that copious amounts of Viagra are involved.
I think the state senate thing is ridiculous . . . if it blows up in Bill’s face and the whole family is exposed, I guess I’d consider it a realistic portrayal of the consequences of Bill being an idiot. If he actually makes it anywhere near getting elected without the secret coming out, then it strains credibility, especially since everyone in Juniper Creek and a fair number of people in Sandy and elsewhere already know the family’s secret.
I was really looking forward to the fourth season. But in episode one, the way Roman’s supposedly frozen body was driven around by several family members over a period of hours with no apparent defrosting or leakage, even after some hours in a deck chair in the sun… it was just too obviously fake. I can handle the rest of the outlandish story-lines, but that was just poorly done.
I’ll say yes- I thought the show was always kind of ridiculous, but the whole plot with Roman’s frozen corpse was the kind of thing that makes you say “I gave up.” With this show it’s really a matter of degree, though. This season has pushed it further, but a lot of this stuff has always been ridiculous: for starters you have Frank and Lois trying to kill each other and sometimes save their marriage at the same time, Wanda poisoning people, Nicki’s under cover operation at the prosecutor’s office, and so many other things.
But so far I don’t think they’re handling the characters as well as they did in some of the earlier episodes and there is probably too much happening. The casino has never been interesting and now it’s getting more attention than ever. Bill’s political goals are totally unrealistic - does anyone watching this show think it’s going to work out? I doubt it - and the polygamy is an open secret, so there’s no drama to his plan of keeping it a secret for a few weeks and then coming out with it. And he may have just ruined that plan anyway.
I was summing up this season for a coworker that just finished watching last season an DVD, and she said she probably won’t bother reating it when it comes out. If it wasn’t being pumped into my house, I don’t think I’d go out of my way to see how they end up. They’re really cramming too much into a 9-episode season.
It’s unfortunate because I think there could have been more potential with this season had they not gone on this random tangent.
If you just had the following storylines:
Bill/Nikki trying to make it work with the added complication of Carolynn and JJ
Margie’s new business causing her to question her decision to get married to Bill and pump out lots of babies since Nikki has given up motherhood (for now)
The casino- I could take or leave it, but last season, with Barb’s in-laws trying to get a piece of it, there was some drama here.
Joey/Wanda, Frank/Lois, Alby/wicked wife- I like almost all of the compound drama. Nikki knows Alby’s secret, I bet Wanda does too.
The neighbors across the street- I think it would have been an interesting story line to have Pam be the one to push for a possible polygamous marriage, because she’s afraid of losing her husband. To see how they deal with converting neighbors would be fun, IMHO.
I’d like to see Heather finally admit that she’s in love with Sarah and have to struggle with faith, being gay (if she is). She’s about the right age to start figuring out that she doesn’t have to be super-Mormon girl.
I just think there was so much built up to in the last seasons that was just abandoned or just barely touched on so far. They would be a lot more interesting than Bill’s obviously ill-fated political campaign. I’d MUCH rather see him move the family to Juniper Creek in an evangelical type clean up operation. He could continue to be a despicable snake but life is far more entertaining (for us) at the compound!
