Do you think that Bill O’reilly would really be the kind of guy to allow himself to get caught up in a sex scandale? From what I see watching the “Factor” I think that Mr. O’reilly is too smart to allow himself to get in a tangled web such as sex scandal, and that he would have way more tact than to “masterbate on the phone.” What do you think?

In my experience, the more self-righteous a public figure is, the more he’s/she’s got some skeletons to hide. Bill O’Reilly and sexual kinks, Rush Limbaugh and drug addiction, Strom Thurmond’s out-of-wedlock interracial daughter, Dr. Laura’s nude photos, Dan Burton’s illegitimate child… the loudness of the fuss gives it away.
Eh. As strident as Dr. Laura can be, I recall that she never made a big secret that she had made “mistakes” in her past (she just wasn’t very specific). So the nude photos didn’t really “count” (as in, “I would never do that!”). She never pretended that she hadn’t done stupid or “immoral” stuff in her past. (Not that I am a huge Dr. Laura apologist—I used to listen and I used to agree with some of what she said, but when she changed her “live and let live” attitude about gay people, I drifted away. Well, I drifted away before that, but anyway . . . )
And Limbaugh’s drug abuse, while embarassing and stupid, is somewhat more understandable (it’s an addiction that he could not control and it doesn’t sound like he’d been an addict throughout his whole career), but of course he’s made stupid, intolerant comments about a lot of things, and now that’s bit him in the butt. But he’s not even in the same stratosphere as O’Reilly, in my opinion (at least as far as I know—and all of this is assuming that O’Reilly actually did the scummy things he’s been accused of).
I think there are a lot of self-righteous people who live sheltered, squeaky clean lives so it isn’t as if they have skeletons in their closet—it’s just that they are so oblivious and they spout off. Then there are the self-righteous hypocrites, which are also in plentiful supply. But I’m not sure that I buy that every self-righteous blowhard has a closetful of skeletons.
My first gut reaction when hearing the news about O’Reilly was the same as the OP’s—no way would O’Reilly be so stupid and foolish. And you know, I don’t doubt that there are many people out there that would love to take him down several pegs even if it meant lying or setting him up, so you know, the jury’s still out about whether he’s really guilty of all this bad behavior. We will have to wait and see.
However, the evidence we’re seeing leak out so far ain’t lookin’ too good for O’Reilly, and frankly, I don’t care all that much. (He’s not my favorite television personality, though I have watched his show semi-regularly.) He has this aggressive type of personality that’s just gotten worse over the years, and sometimes arrogant, vain people can do very foolish things. So, it’s definitely possible that he’s done all these things. We shall see.
But as I’ve said on other O’Reilly threads—I hope it’s not true. Because it’s all so icky. I mean, think about it. ICKY. :eek:
I think Mr. O’Reilly is a grade A asshole myself.
But to be quite honest, I really can’t fathom him doing this.
But ya’ know, hey, I was REALLY surprised when I found out O.J. Simpson DIDN’T kill his wife. It a good thing we got a court system so capable of finding out the truth…
I’m amazed that on these boards people would actually think O’Reilly is above these kind of carnal pleasures… I mean come on now people, he is a prick of the collossal variety, and is not above this kind of lude behaviour. Personally, I’m amazed he has not been brought up on this kind of charge before this. I hope she get’s her money.

I don’t know about the case in point, but I’ve seen stranger things turn out to be true.

I don’t care how smart a guy is, all bets are off when the shlong comes into play.
Considering his smug, I’m always right demeanor, I have no doubt that he may indeed be the “type.” He’s so fucking cocky and obnoxious, it wouldn’t surprise me.
He’s arrogant and he has a dick. That combination has caused trouble for many others before him.

O’Reilly himself says that he believes that this woman has tapes and he has not denied a single allegation (his countersuit does not dispute anything any of Mackris’ specific allegations).
And as far as O’Reilly not being stupid enough, it’s not like he hasn’t said and done stupid things before on the air. He’s been caught lying, screaming at a 9/11 survivor, giving vent to increasingly paranoid rants about “secular forces” taking over America, fantasizing about killing Al Franken, storming out of an NPR interview, etc. And that’s not even counting the massive egoism and relentless self-promotion.
He seems exactly like a guy who would pull the crap he’s being accused of.
I admit I was surprised by the dildo in the kiester, though. I would have thought he was way too homophobic for something like that.

Finally, I think Bill made obscene phone calls. I wonder how non-consensual it was. Or how much she was thinking “Gotcha!” as it was happening.
I wouldn’t be surprised to find out eventually that Clarence Thomas said everything Anita Hill claimed- I just don’t think she considered it harassment at the time. Woman scorned & all that.
Even I, die-hard anti-Clinton Republican, was amazed that Bill got caught in something so tawdry as my side was sooo searching for stuff to get him.
And I was appalled that Jimmy Swaggart, after bringing down Jim & Tammy, was caught with Debra Murphree (ewww!) by another less-prominent AG minister Martin Gorman that he earlier exposed.
