Billy Bob Thorton - what's the attraction?

I’ve watched this guy for years. Seems to have a certain amount of talent as an actor, showing quite a range (didn’t even recognize him in Tombstone for example). But his personal life. I hear now that Angelina and he are splitting (granted she’s a trifle, um, how to put this politely, um, ‘avant guarde’? , but reasonably attractive, and certainly was sought after as it were), and she took him away from (IIRC) Laura Dern, quite the attractive lady herself (and not readily apparent so, um, avante guarde as it were).

And, when I see him on talk shows etc. - some guy. just some guy. Not particularly good looking. NOt particularly charming. His track record w/women is abyssmal.

So what’s the deal?

(correct forum??? it is about an actor…)

Heavy sigh.

I can’t answer why. It just is.

It wasn’t, for me, anyway, until I saw Monster’s Ball. For some reason I found him attractive in that movie. Which really frightened me.

I watched The Man Who Wasn’t There last night, and it affirmed my feelings. I think the dude is sexy. And for some reason I find that horribly horribly wrong! : sob :

Of course, I was just discussing the same situation yesterday involving Mick Jagger. I can’t see his appeal, in fact I think he’s horrid. But lots of gals think he’s the cat’s meow.

Some sort of magnetism or pheromones or something…

Um because he’s rich and famous? You telling me Danny Devito would get laid if he was Joe Schmuck the plumber?

World - but he’s attracting women who are rich and famous in their own right.

I don’t get the ‘mick’ thing, either (except that rumor had it that certain parts of his anatomy were substantial and talented)

I’m a guy, straight as they come, and I can see the attraction of a guy like Billy Bob. He’s what they used to call a man’s man, when that meant men like Rock Hudson, before it meant men like … well, Rock Hudson.

In a skank sort of way, I guess, if that’s what you’re into. Personally, Angelina couldn’t have pulled me off of Laura Dern with a six-foot pry bar.

My wife has quite a thing for him. I just asked her and she said that he’s quiet and exudes great confidence and has an air of mystery to him (though not in Sling Blade, which is playing on TV right now).

Very sexy…I’d do him in a heartbeat. Also tremendously talented.

But I can’t tell you why. It just is what it is.

(And according to Jolie, he is a rock-your-world lover, which could easily explain the parade of attractive women. There is a great deal to be said for a man who can give you a mind-blowing orgasm.)

yea, I understand about the mind blowing orgasm. BUt ya know, You actually have to like get there in the first place.

So, for example, there were men I dated in the past who were physically very attractive. Or really smart. OR really funny. Or really nice, attentive etc. and any one (preferrably combinations) would have led me to find out what he was like in bed.

And I’m just not seeing it w/ ole Billy Bob.

If Danny DeVito were a plumber, he would be married to a woman who looked like . . . Rhea Pearlman.

I heard an extended interview with him on the radio a couple of months ago (at least an hour, between music interludes) and really liked the guy.

The show’s presenter doesn’t suffer self-publicists lightly and the interview wasn’t about films but music (he’d just released an album). Putting aside his album, he was pressed in depth and was genuinely knowledgeable about a surprising range of subjects

I guess musical integrity is partly a question of taste but I found him to be pretty switched on both about that subject and many others. Very likeable and seriously not Hollywood.

…some folks call it a sling blade, I call it a kaiser blade…

ugly-bloke-syndrome?

I’m still not convinced that’s Billy Bob in Sling Blade. I don’t know how he does it, but I cannot, no matter how hard I try, picture Carl as played by Billy Bob Thornton. On the Monster’s Ball DVD, there’s an outtake of Billy Bob playing his character as Carl. One second - Billy Bob. The next second - someone else entirely.

I think it might just be bitter-beer-face from a non-Keystone beer.

This made me think a lot!

Finally I decided (in a really :wally way) that Angelina could get me eventually…

You’re welcome to her, dude. Myself, I can’t see myself ever going any skankier than Rose McGowan.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Rose.

Billy Bob Thorton has a weird thing against komodo dragons, and as a result, I have a weird thing against Billy Bob Thorton. I too wonder what the attraction is. Even back when I had nothing in particular against him, his appeal rather mystified me.

At the same time, I think Steve Buscemi is the hottest thing walking, and that one is hard to explain as well.

YEAH!
I remember watching the scene in “Ghost World” when he turns over in bed to Thora Birch and he’s nekkid (chest only), and thinking,
“jeezuz-I’d do him in a heartbeat!”
…really glad I didn’t say it out loud. Mr. Singular would’ve cast an odd glance…:o

Ever since Mr. Thornton made some comment about how he deeply dislikes Komodo dragons, I have wished fervently for his career to end suddenly and under tragic and embarassing circumstances. I loathe him with every fibre of my being. You simply do not insult the wondrous creature that is Varanus komodensis within my ken and get away with it.

Quite frankly, the attraction for B.B. is incomprehensible to me. He looks like every other inbred hick in a John Deere cap hanging around the feed store and staring longingly at fat women’s ankles.

But then, I have a bizarre and unexplainable attraction to Christopher Walken: his frog-like countenace, his aura of brooding menace, his propensity for psychotic breaks. I dunna know, I just kinda want him to tie me up and do bad things to me.

And Steve Buschemi is also somehow appealing. Although, what’s up with the bizarre crow’s feet around his eyes? These look more like botched plastic surgery scars than ordinary wrinkles. Anybody else notice this?

Just rented Monster’s Ball, and even dismissing the 'Tighty Whities" factor, nope, still cannot see the attraction.

bleh.

Whew!
I’m glad I’m not alone in my bizarre and inexpicable attraction to both Billy Bob and Steve Buscemi.
I’ve been trying for years to explain it to my husband but I don’t understand it myself.

I also harbor an unhealthy attraction for Vin Disel (big gravely-voiced bald guy in Fast and Furious) which has lead me to watch some of the worst movies ever put on film.

Ah well, I guess there is just no accounting for taste.
