The pope has been called Pontifex Maximus, the Roman effective, (although not literal), phrase meaning High Priest, off and on since the fifth century, with the name in pretty much constant use since the Renaissance.
As to predictions of the end of the church or papacy, the Malachy prophecies would make Pope Francis the last one, (although Malachy seems to have confused the name Peter for Francis), so it seems that Meier is just echoing an already silly “prophecy.”

(Despite the over-inflated prices on his tomes, publishing costs probably prevent him from making much money on them, so he is hardly getting rich on this stuff, so I have not called him a fraud. Of course, he might just be an incompetent fraud who is failing to get rich on his efforts, but that was not what I said. )
