There are lots of reasons those people may have been in the same class that do not involve either predatory behavior or stupidity.
When I was in the seventh grade, I was taking geometry every day at the nearby high school. When I was in 9th grade I was taking physics (generally an 11th grade glass) rather than the biology class that was standard for ninth graders.
In my high school there wasn’t a specified track for science classes (though biology, chemistry, physics, biochemistry was the “standard” track). Anybody could take or not take science classes as they wished. It wasn’t uncommon for seniors to finally take biology at the same time as many freshmen. This was also true of math classes. English and history classes tended to follow a stricter sequence that kept students segregated.
When I was in school, sex between underclassmen and upperclassmen was not uncommon; but that doesn’t make it acceptable. Personally, I never had any interest in girls even a grade below me; on the other hand, though, when I was in the 9th grade I had all kinds of interest in those older than me.
I received my first blow job on school property and it still never occurred to me to get one in class. I was so unimaginative.

But, if I may be presumptuous for a second (and risk all kinds of calling foul about my judgmentalism), is it likely that this fourteen year old would be in a class several years above her grade level?
If obfusciatrist is talking about a high school like mine, for many classes there is no “grade-level”.We chose classes each quarter from a list, and although some courses had pre-requisites, many didn’t. It was not at all uncommon for a class to contain students from each grade,and it didn’t mean that anyone was above or below grade level. It simply meant that I chose to take “Science Fiction and Fantasy” for my English class as a freshman (14 years old) , while one of my classmates chose it as a senior (17 or 18 years old).
I was the first person who turned 18 in my senior class. I certainly didn’t give up dating my fellow classmates on my birthday.
While the 14/18 spread sounds like quite a stretch, considering that some 14 year olds are in the 9th grade, and this guy was in the 11th grade, I don’t find it all that odd. There were large numbers of guys dating girls two grades (and even three) below them back then.
I’m going to stick with the “more details” crowd until I can make a reasonable judgment on this one.

As hushhush as the school board is being strikes me as a little odd. You’d think they’s love to throw a single, obvious transgressor to the media wolves.
Related to this, I heard a news blurb on the radio this morning about 4 or 5 young boys (11-12) being sent to juvie for a similar act–carried out on each other, also taking place in the classroom. However, so far I haven’t been able to find any confirmation of that.
Maybe it’s something in the Ritalin?
Probably not, but then all of the really kinky women I know seem to have been smarter than average (and that first blowjob was from our eventual valedictorian).
If they had reason to think they could do it without being caught, I wouldn’t be surprised by the number of people who would try it. Hell, I’ve had sex in some interesting places just because I was pretty sure we wouldn’t be caught.
(Having worked for a long time in college libraries, I can tell you that there are lots of people who apparently get a thrill from the risk.)
PURE SPECULATION
It just occurred to me that one way they the teacher and students could have been in the room but they thought they had a chance of getting away with it is if they were watching a film, the lights were out and everybody’s attention was pretty much focused in one direction.
I have a difficult time imagining any activity so stupid, offensive, repulsive, or violent that no teenaged boy would be willing to do it, no matter who was watching.
In middle and high school I was repeatedly and persistently harassed, both sexually and non-sexually, by boys “in front of a teacher and 30 classmates”. I could count on one hand the number of times a teacher attempted to do anything to stop it, and could count on no hands the number of times these attempts involved anything more than “Boys, stop that and sit down.” And I was much less of a pushover than most 14 year old girls.

Now that’s a big WHAT?!? I’ve lived in “Southern Ontario” (London, York Region and Toronto; my kids go to school in Mississauga) since 1974, and I’ve never, ever heard of fraternities or sororities in high school.
I took you at your word considering you more credible on American high school culture but

Well, I had some difficulty acquiring proof on the net, my high school, Niagara District Secondary School in the Niagara Falls/St Catharines area had three fraternities and one sorority. The best I could do was provide a sort of bio of one individual from Fort Erie
Monty, America isn’t all like Utah and the LDS membership, but I’ll concede that using the term “most” instead of " 10s of millions" or “many” is not exactly supportable. What exactly is your concern here?
With regard to the pre-pubescent boys labwork in aid of their sex education, I think they’re moving too fast. You gota crawl before you walk. They’ll probably be desensitized by the experience, and never bother to participate in the customary but less exciting circle jerk when they’re a little older.
Well, I’ll tell you what, it is awfully good to know that I was raped when I lost my virginity. Because, hey, I was 14… there was no way I could consent, right? Oh, shit, and she was 14, too, so she couldn’t consent, either! There must have been evil space aliens forcing us to have sex against our will, and we blocked it out of our memory!
I don’t know what world I live in sometimes—because it doesn’t seem to be the same one others live in—, but “sex” and “youth” wasn’t exactly unheard of. In fact, it was much of what was talked about.
But, hell, since I was obviously raped perhaps my fragile youth psyche has been damaged, and has turned me into some deranged person in self-denial as an adult.
[note: I know several young women who were, in fact, molested in their youth, and one who was raped as an adult, so this post is in no way meant to be a slander on people who have had problems—you have my complete sympathy]
NO, you probably weren’t raped nor were you guilty of rape.
YOu were both 14. Sex happens. In most states, two 14 year-olds aren’t guilty of a crime if they have sex. IANAL, but that’s my quick opinion. If they are guilty of a crime, it is a mis-demeanor.
Can you not understand the difference of an 18 year-old having sex with a 14 year-old?
Fortunately, the laws in most states understand the difference.
I don’t think erislover was talking about “14-year-olds being charged with rape” so much as “14-year-olds not being mature enough to be able to give consent.”
I think as far as the law go it might be a good idea to make a blanket statement equating age with maturity, but I would never make such quick judgements when it comes to morality.
IANAL, but I suspect that in the eyes of the law, a pair of below-the-age-of-consent persons who engage in intercourse (or other sex acts) are not considered to be having sex. I’m not prepared to say what they are doing, in the eyes of the law, if my suspicion is correct; perhaps a lawyer could enlighten us as to how this special case plays out?
IANAL either, but in terms of how it’s actually treated, in the one case I know of where a 14 yo girls parents wanted the 14 yo boy arrested, they changed their minds pretty quickly when told that their daughter would also have to be arrested. It wouldn’t necessarily work this way in the case of a larger age difference- say a 15 year old and an 11 year old.
