Bishop vs trump

I hope so, but one has to worry when even liberals here think she overstepped her bounds by preaching tolerance and mercy too aggressively.

Who else here has said that? @We_re_wolves_not_werewolves did initially, but has since indicated that, after reading responses in this thread, they have changed their mind.

And it’d also be telling if monkeys were to fly out of my nostrils. But I don’t bother mentioning that fact.

I don’t believe that preaching tolerance and mercy can be preached too aggressively. Except for tolerance toward fascism.

You deserve cookies. Do you like snickerdoodles? Ask hajario about them.

They should make a blue hat that proclaims “Nasty Women for Peace.”

A meme shows an image of Bishop Budde, followed by three panels showing a couple of guys from (I think) The Life Of Brian.

‘What was it she said that got everyone so upset?’
‘Be kind to each other.’
‘Oh, yeah. That’ll do it.’

In an odd bit of synchronicity, the Revised Common Lectionary gospel reading today features Jesus in his home town of Nazareth, reading from the prophet Isaiah, saying:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

(It should also be noted that in the next passage from Luke, Jesus tells his hometown folks he’s not going to do any miracles for them because they, who see themselves as God’s anointed, aren’t doing right, and they drive him out of town to try to throw him off a cliff.)

But surely, no one today would do that whole throw-em-off-the-cliff thing…

There are ways of talking “to” people and there are ways of talking “at” people. This would be the “at” way.

She is a representative of the church at large and not some basement dweller writing an editorial to a news outlet. She has had years to perfect the art of communication so that it is a tool for teaching and reaching out to one’s flock.

She failed in this respect.

I’m sorry, are you trying to argue that Donald would have listened and changed his behavior if the bishop had phrased her sermon differently?

Which explains why she did such a good job of it.

If she hadn’t done it with the directness she did, it would’ve flown right over his head. She did the opposite of failing. She made sure he heard the message.

Now, him crying like a little baby about being asked to have mercy on people is not her problem. That’s all on the man-baby and his supporters. And any “Christian” out there asking people to not fall for the sin of empathy. WWJD? Not what these “Christians” are doing.

No. It’s just a skill expected from someone of the Bishop’s caliber. This was something prepared in advance which allows a speaker the time to write something with polished eloquence.

I think this is quite eloquent, and a message that any Christian should approve of:

You said she failed. What more do you think would have been accomplished by this sermon if she had written it differently; more publicity, more consideration from Trump, what?

No, he’s clearly trying to argue that nobody, especially a bishop or pastor, should implore Donald Trump to wield his executive authority and political power with compassion and respect for democratic institutions, and implicitly criticize him for already doing the contrary.

Again, if you don’t want to get preached at, stay out of church. Especially if you are just there to make a show for your religious supporters even though you are in no way a person of faith or respect basic Christian values in anyway. Just fuck right off home and twitter away your Sunday, Donnie.

As an educator, Job #1 tends to be “meet the audience where they are.”

She. Nailed. It.

Nuance? Subtlety? It is to laugh.

There are ways of talking “to” people and there are ways of talking “at” people. This would be the “at” way.

I can’t explain it any differently. If you don’t understand it or disagree there is nothing more I can add.

Which way works best on Trump?

I strongly disagree. Talking at Trump in her sermon would have been along the lines of:

“Mr. President, in the past days, you have signed executive orders, and instituted policies, which will undeniably harm and dehumanize LGBTQ persons, immigrants, and other marginalized and powerless members of our society. You claim to have felt the hand of God in your actions, and to be a Christian, but your policies, your choices, and your speeches are starkly antithetical to the teachings and guidance of Jesus Christ. If you are, indeed, a Christian, you are also a hypocrite.”
