Bizarro World Ice Cream Truck…A Herald of Spring MMP

groans I can’t win. I went to boot up my laptop yesterday… No dice. The screen won’t turn on and what’s more, after about 30 seconds of booting up (accompanied by the usual whirring and clicking sounds) the row of indicator lights at the top blinks off, the components shut off, and then it starts booting all over again. It keeps doing that continuously until I shut it off via the Power button - and endless string of aborted partial boot-ups accompanied by a screen that never turns on. I can’t even access the BIOS menu during startup.

Chris Roommate is a computer engineer; he and some of his Comp E friends suggested it might be a burned out LCD backlight (not sure how that’d explain the perpetual partial boots), a blown lamp inverter on the power chip, a bad motherboard, or a dead graphics card… I have no idea though. Whatever’s wrong, though, it’s so bad that I cannot interact with the computer in any way, shape, or form other than to power it on and off via the power button. Oh, and it’s out of warranty.

This would be bad enough if it weren’t for the fact that most of my homework is either done online via third-party websites or posted online on Blackboard. If you need me I’ll be living in the campus library for the next few weeks. Oh, and the day before my laptop died, my really nice Bose headphones broke. At this point I’m afraid to start my car lest it die on me as well >.<

The computer is a laptop, HP, model dv9005us, if anyone has any advice or suggestions for what might be wrong I’d really appreciate it, as anything I can tell the PC repair guy could be helpful. I really don’t wanna have to buy another computer. :frowning:

::zooms off to do online Physics HW::

Oh yeah, gotti’s and moonie’s posts reminded me of my broken item: the locking door for my gas cap on my car won’t open. The little lever inside the car won’t release it, and it has no release on it. KT got it open by going in the trunk and removing the carpet and reaching around back there for a bit, but that’s not exactly efficient at the gas station. There’s just a cable that runs from the release in the car to the gas cap door thingy. It seems like that should be the last thing that fails on a car!

After weeks of insane busyness at work, it’s suddenly dead, and I don’t really even have any long-term projects I should be working on. Anyone want to keep me company while I’m bored here?

taxi, I’d probably start with 2 tsp of chipotle powder and see how it goes. It’ll give you an excuse to keep tasting the raw batter as you go (you know you wanna)… and keep in mind that it’ll probably be a bit spicier before it’s baked up.

Poor Moonie. :frowning: I think I’d go a bit twitchy if my laptop died, and I don’t even need it for anything particularly important, besides getting my SDMB fix and browsing around for new recipes.

gotti, I’m biased, but I’d totally go Canon SLR. My XTi has yet to disappoint.

I’m solo for dinner tonight… I’m really tempted to grab some takeout on the way home, but I shouldn’t. Anyone have good dinner-for-one suggestions?

Thanks. I like the taste-as-you-go part!
I was always partial to pasta with jarred spaghetti sauce (and then freeze the rest of the spaghetti sauce into individual-sized containers) when I was making dinner for one.

Funny work story that hopefully won’t require so much explanation as to squeeze all the humor out of it:
My manager brought in some cookies today (yummy chocolate chip ones with lots of vanilla in them… I’m going to try extra vanilla in the future) and put them over by one of my teammates who does a lot of web stuff. Boss came by and asked Teammate “What’s up with the cookies?” To which Teammate replied, “Hang on, I’m just pulling the cookie data now.”

It’s sad when one spends so much time working that “cookie” automatically brings up a web data response, not a food response. :stuck_out_tongue:

Whew. I survived hump day. I can haz sleep nao??

swampy, did you steal my identity? 'cause I’ve gotten kinda bored with this one.

Muppet, my SSN has a 7 in it. I’m sure you can figure out the rest.

I continued to search for myself. On one site, knowing my name and city, I found my address and phone number… which is in the phone book. Yeah, I’m scared about having my ID stolen…

Daughter is on her way home. Supper Fairy is absent yet again. Dunno what to do about it. Stoopit Supper Fairy.

I have a stoopit dog.

Personally, being a cat person, I find this to be a redundant statement.

Home time! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

taxi, pasta is one of my usuals too… though I made a pasta dish for dinner last night. Then again, one can never have enough pasta, right?

Moooooooom, was that site the local White Pages directory, by any chance?

I spent most of my day poking around on Twitter. It’s ummm… addictive. Which is exactly what I need - another site to occupy me for hours on end. (dunno if any other Mumpers are Twittering yet, but I’m @Izzbell if anyone feels like saying hello)

That reminds me, I was watching Good Eats on Monday and it was the vanilla episode. Alton Brown had an interesting recipe for fruit salad that I’m gonna try once the weather warms up a bit more. Fruit Salad with Vanilla Dressing.

I am leaning that way, after picking them both up at a nearby camera store. I just can’t believe how light they are! At first, I was about to accuse the guy of showing me a hollow display model. Even though it’s completely different than the Canon film SLR I had ten years ago, there just seemed to be something familiar about the Canon - probably the shutter. I had to look for it on the Nikon.

I just have to decide if the XSi is worth the roughly $200 more than the XS. Or do I wait for the T1i to hit the stores? (ETA: May) Canon just announced this tasty little morsel today. With a 15 megapixel sensor, 3" display, DIGIC IV processor and listing at $800, it’s a 50D killer. And the people who own 40Ds and 50Ds are grumpy! It’s just like buying computers - there’s always going to be something better, faster and cheaper next month.

Aside from that, I just have a big crate of donwannas. I’m achy in various spots and it’s just wearing me out. Especially the back pain and sciatica. I’m really tired of that.

I’m making veal meatballs with a gorgonzola sauce for dinner from thisrecipe. I’ve done it before but not in ages… just depends on when I happen to see TPR (temporary price reduction) on a package of ground veal. Doesn’t happen often. I think I’m going to throw in some frozen spinach to make it slightly healthier. That makes up for having a cream sauce, right?

ETA: I forgot that there’s supposed to be fresh spinach or arugula in the recipe… don’t have either so I’m going to toss in some frozen spinach. And maybe serve with frozen green beans 'cause I don’t have any fresh veggies on hand. So frozen it is! (It’s snowing here so it’s still winter so we have frozen veggies. That’s the way it is in the Frozen North!)

We went out for Messican, and my debit card was declined - so who stole my identity?? It doesn’t matter that my account balance is many times the cost of dinner, obviously someone is messing with my money. So ***KNOCK IT OFF!! ***

My other card worked, so I foiled you! BWAHAHAHAH!! That card doesn’t have my birth year on it!

Plus I have leftover Pollo Fiesta for lunch tomorrow. El Yummo!!

Time to knit…

Veal meatballs sound yummy, taxi.

There were recipes back there somewhere that I need to add…tomorrow.

Wow, FCM, your SSN has a 7 in it too? Maybe we’re the same person!!!

I just have a point and shoot, but I’ve been very happy with Canon. They seem better designed than Nikon. I always find the controls more intuitive and better placed. Most of my cameras in the past have been Canons and they’ve been very reliable.

Oooh, Rebo, I hate it when the newspaper delivery guy starts to aim for my plants. I don’t think they’ve been damaged anytime recently, but they’ve gotten dangerously close.

Long, tiring day. Didn’t get nearly as much done as I wanted to and already know that my schedule tomorrow is going to be a killer. This is making me want to crawl into bed. But, instead, I’m going to have something for dinner. Maybe pizza. Or something containing peas. And then I’m going to fold more pots and plant more seeds. Yay!

Is it Firday yet? Why not?

GT

I had dinner, but am still hungry. What gives?

:jumps in startlement:*

thanks - I miss you all, too. I am slightly less blurfy today, but that could be due to the fact that it’s Competition Weekend and I am off from work until Tuesday

Now, now. Not every has a sense of esthetics . . .  =^.^=

  • in the virtual cyber world, I jump as high as I like, dammit

Rebo, I grumped to Land o’ Lakes about their extra sharp cheddar cheese…

They sent me a check for $7 and a buttload of coupons for the butter blend I praised so highly up front. I paid only $4.50 for the block of cheese, too.

The kicker is I bought a second block just to be sure, and it was as bad as the first. There will not be a third.

maybe it’s not their cheese in general. but the quality of stuff they package for Sam’s Club (inferior product for discount warehouse is not beyond the possibilty for a lot of companies)

Could be, Rosie. Considering the way Wally*World almost destroyed Vlasic Pickles with the Contract from Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised.

While I’m on a roll, I just sent this to the subrogation contractor for my health insurance company when they wanted to know who they could sue for VWfe’s fall in January. I was feeling churlish and cheeky that day.

I took Gordie out after the game tonight, and he started barking at…a trailer full of brush clippings. I fear the boy has dain bramage.

FCM, it’s just the way the Debit system works. If it declines for a criminal. it’s a security feature. If it declines for you, it’s a pain in the buttocks.

Sorry about the computer, Moonie.

Blurf. I am tired today, had a late night and there was beer involved, specifically a quantity of Fuller’s “London Pride”. Not a huge quantity but combined with a late night, it makes for a tired person.

I am going to mess about with exam papers today, 1800 of them need to be put in numerical order and shoved in a cupboard. Envy me.
