Hendrix died from an accidental overdose of sleeping pills (well, actually he aspirated vomit, but same difference). It wasn’t a recreational drug and the reason he OD’d was that he’d been given new pills which he was supposed to break into quarters. He didn’t realize the pills were supposed to be broken, accidentally took too much, threw up in his sleep and choked to death. It wasn’t about partying, just a misunderstanding and an accident. Jimi wasn’t really that much into hard drugs.

True enough. But (and I am neither speaking for him or defending him)–BUT, there is something about pile ons that make the focus of them not want to back down. Call it cussedness or stubbornness or stupidity or whatever, it is there. And I’m not sure I blame them. In a way, it’s like a walk of shame. I’ve participated in several pile ons and while I may have been angry at the time, further reflection makes me wonder what the purpose really is. Like the RO meme we have now (and it’s a great way to deal with all the slings and arrows this world delivers), the pile on is an almost ritualized tradition here.

What, exactly, is Dio supposed to do here? If he apologizes–to whom is he saying sorry? All black people? They so don’t care. All the black posters here? Why just them–surely we can find some white or other race that is offended for not being called musical? All the posters here? Most haven’t even read the thread. Should he name every poster he’s disagreed with in here and apologize to them? What is he apologizing for? For mis-speaking? For harboring unbeknownst to himself a particle of racial stereotyping that (as far as I can see, which may not be far) harms no one? Why is he apologizing for being human? We none of us are without our own petty prejudgements, no matter the color of our skin.

I get that the Pit is where we all bay for blood and all, but seriously–what are you all looking for here? Do you consider him the Eliot Spitzer of the Pit and therefore take glee in his shortcomings? What? I’ve never understood just what the piled on is supposed to do. For some here, nothing short of falling on a sword and being buried in unhallowed ground is enough–and even then, some would spit on the grave. I just don’t get it. So, forgive this hijack, but I needed to say it.

This. Diogenes and I have had our ahem moments, but I agree with eleanorrigby. Yeah, so he said something stupid. Every single one of us has, at one time or another. No amount of calling him a racist is going to change anything. We’re all a bunch of stubborn, hard-headed, outspoken old codgers (or young codgers, as the case may be) who disagree. Same shit, different day.

Just as with sunburn, I’m sure melanin has a lot to do with musical talent, which I am also sure is subject to objective measurement and not simply a matter of culturally-informed preferences. I’m also sure that coming up with small lists of particular musicians of various races is a great way to definitively establish the different intrinsic qualities of musical talent of those races.

This is a dumb hijack of this thread, but I do believe it shows just how hard headed you are. I have taken acid and mushrooms on numerous occasions and saying they aren’t hard drugs is bull shit. If you look at the studies that were done with acid they actually escorted subjects home and had a nurse wait with them until they fell asleep.

Offenderati hate generalizations based on race, class, country of origin or gender. You made a statement that despite being positive about blacks is considered racist. Someone already explained it is the same as saying Chinese are good at math.

I don’t fully understand the phenomenon but apparently by praising a group for something they appear to be good at you are implying they are not as good at something else or at least sustaining the idea that they are different.

So I don’t think you’re racist or that your remark was really bad, but your defense by naming specific artists is rather comical. I hope you were doing it mainly in jest.
