Black Sash? Did anyone watch?

Well I did. As a martial arts fan, I really wanted to see it.
I think it has potential. Most folks are not going to like the cool camera cuts they did, with the split screen and such, but we’ll see what happens.
My fear is that it’s going to end up some crappy Dawson’s Creek knock-off, with the characters all falling in love or some garbage like that.
Anyone else have any feedback?

And for the record, Mako rocks.

I watched it. I’m a sucker for martial arts in anything… books, TV, movies, you name it, I love it.

It was exactly what I thought it’d be – basically ‘90210’ with kung fu. Not fantastic, but not absolutely horrible either. They’ve worked on getting all the archetypes – the Shy Girl, the Angry Sullen Teenager, the Player… You’re absolutely right, though; the entire teenage section of the cast will end up falling in love with each other. That’s how these shows work. (They even showed some major lip-locking action in the previews and commercials.)

I was surprised at how well the martial arts were done – the actors seem like they’ve actually had some decent training! Not just enough to get by in front of a camera, they look like they know what they’re doing. I liked those neato split-shots, too.

I think I’m in love with Sarah Carter, the actress who plays Allie (the Shy Girl). Swoon.

And I second that emotion – Mako rocks. Now if they can only get Bolo Yeung on for an episode sometime…

I’m baffled by its placement in the broadcast schedule. Why on earth program it against Alias?

I like the show… it’s produced by the same people who put out Smallville, so it has similar touches. At first, it seemed hokey, but I’m going to give it a chance and hopefully the show will find its rhythm. I wish some of the students were Asian… does Kristen Kreuk have any sisters?

Actually, Kristin does have a younger sister, IIRC.

So these “cool” camera cuts… Are they really cool, or is it the “MTV school of editing fight scenes so you can’t tell what the hell is going on”?

You can definitely tell what’s going on, and it seems less faked than a lot of the chop socky moves seen on other shows. Obviously, the fighting is for show and the villains are there to be punching bags, but you can tell the actors are trained in martial arts.

I get the impressiong that Russel Wong has done some training int the past, even if only for a movie role.

Angry Girl is just learning. She’s still pretty stiff, and lacks the loose fluid motion of someone who’s learned in Wu Shu (or Choy Li Fut… I’m not sure which they’re working with, but I’d be willing to bet it’s one of the two).

I liked the camera tricks too. It wasn’t done to cover up fight scenes, it was more of a “Flavor” thing. Nice… I hope they stick with it.

But I’m quite worried it’s going to become “Dawson’s Kung Fu Creek”. We’ll have to see what happens…
