Black Women's Hair

Is black women’s hair the same as black men’s? It seems like black women have straighter and softer hair, but I think this might involve treatments. I know that black men have all different types of hair naturally, but it is usually very course and curly. Is this how black women’s hair is naturally?

Speaking as African-American male with some knowledge of women’s hair – I have a mother, two sisters and assorted ex-girlfriends – we are almost always a naturally nappy people in both genders unless treatments are involved.

Sounds like you weren’t around when Afros were in style for both men and women (actually, we called them “naturals” where I lived). The hair is the same.

I once saw a comment by someone visiting a country where most people have naturally dark brown hair. But many of the women died their hair lighter. He noted that the women must come from an entirely diffent gene pool as the men.

In the same vein, how often do black people have to wash their hair? I’ve heard that washing it every day can really mess it up. But don’t you guys use oils and stuff on your hair that “white” hair doesn’t need? I’ve always wondered about this. For some reason I haven’t asked my black friends at work, because I don’t really think about it. But since the subject came up here…

Black woman checking in. We don’t naturally have softer, straighter hair. We soften and straighten it. Most men don’t really care about having touchable, silky hair and whatnot, so they leave it alone. Some black people do have a softer texture than others, but this has nothing to do with gender.

In the same vein, how often do black people have to wash their hair?

Had a black suite mate in college and I have a black friend now. Both of them, IIRC, did it about once every 2 weeks?

I could be wrong.

Something like that. I just washed mine this morning. I had the urge to Herbal.

Another Black woman here, there are all kinds of black hair just like there are all kinds of white hair. I have what alot of black people would call the “Good Hair” because it straightens with little heat, curls with a little water, and is not as coarse. My sister has “even better hair” that will hang straight if its brushed straight and will curl if its brushed to curl. My Brother has NAPS- nappy nappy nappity nap. I can apply this to anyone though, My best friend has long thick hair that is nappy when first out of the shower, but her little sister who also has long thick hair, her hair is never nappy. they are both white.

I wash my hair everyday that I do not want it straight, however if my hair is straightened, I will pass a few days without washing it. My hair tends to break so I condition it every couple days atleast. My moms hair grows long and thick(and nappy), She washes her hair about once a month- So I guess it just depends on the person.
