Blocking a user

Thanks for being so understanding, officer. I promise to turn my life around.

VinylTurnip, don’t change material within quote boxes.

BigT, don’t be a junior mod.

twickster, for the SDMB

OK, this made me laugh.

[QUOTE=BigT]
Unfortunately, that’s also against the rules. Not reporting you because I don’t want to make a big deal about it, but we can’t alter the intent of quotes in quote boxes.

This made me laugh harder.

This made me laugh hardest of all. Priceless!

Wait, I thought the rule was no editing of text in quote boxes, but leaving bits out and ellipsis was OK?

A technical question. I’ve never put anyone on ignore status. (I’m more of the “take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing end them” school.) How does it look if there’s a thread with posts by somebody on your ignore list? Are there empty boxes which tell you there are ignored posts or does the thread completely remove the posts as if the ignored poster hadn’t posted? And what happens when a poster you’re ignoring starts a thread?

IANAM but I think the rule is you can’t do a partial quote that changes the meaning of the original text even if all of the words you used were technically in the original.

Yes, Little Nemo’s understanding is the same as mine – truncating a quote to change the meaning, even for clearly humorous intent, is not allowed. I should have said “don’t change the meaning” rather than “don’t change the material,” however.

There’s an empty box saying something like “post by [name of blocked poster].”

And you’ll see the thread on the forum page, and, I think, can mouseover to read the OP. (Mods are not allowed to use the ignore function, so I’m not 100% positive about this.)

I haven’t seen a thread started by someone on ignore in a while, but I’m pretty sure it shows up on the list. The mouse-over preview is blank, though. Actual posts in threads show everything you normally see, but the text is replaced with “This message is hidden because <username> is on your ignore list.” It hyperlinks “ignore list” so you can go check to see who’s on it. You also have links to “view post” and “remove user from ignore list”.

As with everything board-related, why not put someone on your list to test it out and see what happens? You can always remove them when you’re done.

I am strangely tempted to say something about hall monitors…

Well, you didn’t need to address that specifically to ME, Colibri. I follow the advice of the Hermit to Prince Cor: courteous words or hard knocks, nothing in between.

Thanks Skald. By complete co-incidence, I also recently decided I was interested in how to add someone to the ignore list, and this was very useful.
