I think it is lack of flavor. Which can be a plus in a sandwich where you want crunch but no distraction from the main ingredient.
Though I usually have iceberg available for sandwiches, we almost never use it in salads.
If I make my own BLT, it’s usually as a breakfast sandwich with a fried egg. So:
- Bottom slice of toast
- Tomato slices
- Egg
- Bacon
- Lettuce
- Mayo on underside of top slice of toast against the lettuce.
As long as the bacon is in contact with the mayo, I’m good any way for the rest. And I don’t get the iceberg lettuce hate as it is sweet, crispy and flavorful
This is it. If you don’t want avocado, just take it out and you have the exact correct traditional order.
I am not sure how to respond to you Gormondos out there (a word I just made up from Gourmet, go figure). If there is bread, lettuce, tomatoes, bacon, and some kind of spreading like mayonnaise, yogurt, avocado, or what ever - I will eat it. And ask for one or two more, most likely making it myself. Now I am hungry, dang nab it and the refrigerator is empty and the grocery stores are now closed in this small town. I look forward to breakfast tomorrow. Might report back, but will probably need to take a nap afterwards.
I like some of the additions as new ideas: Avocados, thin sliced cucumbers instead of <insert some type of lettuce>, some sharp cheese but not to overpower.
My suggestion is Wasabi Mayo or spicy mayo of your choice perhaps from https://www.wikihow.com/Make-Spicy-Mayo Great taste and it cleans out your sinuses.
I like mayo on the bottom piece of bread and yellow mustard on the top. Also, the bread should be toasted.
Much though I like spicy things in general, I think wasabi in any form would be a mistake on a BLT. Again, you don’t want to compete with the tomato.

Oh, god, that Kraft sandwich spread! Weirdest concoction ever made.
Tomato makes up the middle layer so the juices aren’t absorbed so much by the bread.

The lettuce keeps the tomato and mayo from getting the toast soggy.
Whatever goes onto the triple BLT at The Peanut on Main in Kansas City. Here’s a picture. I usually have mine with a fried egg as well.
It’s the best sandwich I’ve ever had, and possibly the best thing to eat in Kansas City.
Bacon, cheddar cheese, black pepper, red onions, lettuce, tomato, mayo, on toasted whole wheat.
How do you eat that monster?
And being from Hawaii, the BLT must have a slice of pineapple included.

Yes, yes Hellmans mayo is the best.
I don’t quite get how you can put bacon on anything and have the tomato be the full on star. Though it indeed must be good quality, since it’s not got a lot else to help it out.
But, yeah, bread, condiment, bacon, tomato, lettuce, condiment, bread is the usual way, with either or both condiment layers being optional. I tend to prefer the condiment on the lettuce side, if only one layer.
And I can see using iceberg. Sure, the bacon adds crunch, but the lettuce is a different kind of crunch, and can also bulk up the sandwich a bit beyond what you can typically get with the tomato, without impacting the flavor. Still, I prefer other lettuces simply because they last longer without going brown.
Bacon is really good. A proper tomato, though, is even better. There aren’t many things that can upstage bacon, but tomatoes are one of them.
No tomato for me.
I mix Hellman’s mayo and a dash of yellow mustard on one slice of toast.
Add crispy bacon, sliced Velveeta, lettuce, and toast. Cut diagonally. Add one dill pickle spear and a few chips to plate.
Enjoy
