Board completely inaccessible in the mornings, past 2 days

But the server can drop you if the DB takes too long to respond. A timeout error can come from the DB or the code, depending on how it’s all set up. (Some scripting languages allow for an override on the code timeout, so it’s hard to tell.)

It’s happening some to me this morning, but a refresh clears it away.

(Free advice: save long posts in Notepad before submitting.)

This may be a dumb question but the SDMB is on its’ own dedicated server, right? Which begs the question-- why is your host running jobs on the database and not Creative Loafing?

I cannot fathom running a board like this on a virtual or shared server.

During business hours on a production system? Go give them a smack upside the head for me, will ya?

Even if we are on a dedicated physical server (as opposed to a shared server or even a dedicated virtual server) there are plenty of system-level things such as file integrity checks that can really raise hell if the server admin (ie: the hosting provider) doesn’t know what they’re doing or is ignorant of time zones.

This also happened to me today.

I meant to try to keep re-loading to track it, but got caught up on something else bright and shiny.

On a semi-related issue, I keep having to re-enter my login info every five to ten minutes, or jump from board to board. Anybody else see this?

(Yes, I am a night owl. I often read these boards between midnight and dawn.)

Today’s occurrence seemed to be much later in the morning/early afternoon. No exact times, but approximately 11-12 to 1:30 pm, Eastern.

Today was the worst I’ve experienced, no access at all roughly from 8:30 - Noon CDT.

Yep. Bad day here too.

I’ve got a new one that I haven’t seen before.

As usual, a lot of board-hangs, errors, and the like. After a couple of minutes, all of the threads are listed as “read”. Nothing weird there. The weird thing is that I then opened up MSPIMS and found that it’s normal where the only “read” threads are the ones that were posted in prior to my last log in (i.e. last night). I’ve never seen one forum not follow the others in this error. Weird.

terrible. only threads I can access are the ones on the main page, by clicking the go to last post button.

It is doing that weird thing where it won’t refresh the Last Post display.

Shodan

Couldn’t get the forum at all today, from 10am to 1:30pm Eastern

Alas, 8:30 - Noon Central.

Tuba says the hosting company is running something intensive in the wee hours of the morning, Mountain Time. Apparently they are not aware of the national or international nature of this board. If that’s true, it must still be night at 9AM Mountain.

And this board is on a shared host?!?! (or !?!?)

Sheesh guys, whaddya want? The Hamsters have to take a break to eat sometime!

Yeah, I see that a lot. It’s been happening sporadically for quite a time now.

Of course ‘middle of the night’ is a relative term.

I’m based in the UK. For the past 2 - 3 weeks or so, my experience has been that in the morning the Boards are effectively inaccessible. Maybe the front page loads, but I can’t access any specific forum or thread. I can often get a thread to open by clicking on the ‘last post’, but by and large the Boards are unavailable. The problem seems to clear up around mid-day or 1 pm, and then everything runs normally until the next day.

Strange. Same thing here, and I’m what, five hours off from you?

ETA: In other words, it’s a morning problem, and clears up in the early afternoon. Just like for you. But I’m in the Eastern Time zone (which I reckon is the world standard).

For me, it’s ~6:00 am to about 7:30 am, MST

I have this problem a lot too, and when I check it with ‘Down for you?’ it always says it’s just ME!

Glad to hear that it’s not!
