Body types - ectomorph, endomorph, mesomorph

I was wondering what the current medical thinking is on the theory of body types - ectomorph (essentially, the skinny, nerdy type), mesomorph (classic ‘jock’ type) and endomorph (rolly polly plump type).

A search on Google turns up plenty of web pages describing what these types are. However, it’s hard to get a feeling for whether the medical community agrees with this classification, or views it in the same way that astronomers view astrologers

Are these 3 body types generally accepted as a sound foundation for categorizing humans? Is someone born a mesomorph (etc.) for life, and stays that way? Or is it all vagueness, smoke and mirrors?

Perhaps Qadgop the Mercotan can step in here (thanks for all the excellent posts btw QTM!)

Mods - feel free to move this to IMHO if you feel it necessary…but I do think there is a factual question here (somewhere

Cecil addressed this in his first book. You can run a search and find it. I believe the original question was about free weights vs. machine-assisted (Nautilus, etc).

Our pediatrician recorded body types in my sons medical charts. The older son was listed as ectomorph body type. My ectomorph is on the football team, he also plays basketball, throws discus, swims on a swim team, and golfs. He played soccer and baseball when he was younger. The younger one was recorded as a mesomorph. My mesomorph had the the body (and personality of a rammbunctious athlete) but never played sports, sub-acute leukemia ruled his life.
