"Bogart" (not the actor) used as slang

According to Ed Zotti, an Administrator on this board, “We’re thinking about charging an annual subscription fee to post on the Straight Dope Message Board.”

Since doing so would eliminate any interest I have in participating on this board, and since I suspect “We’re thinking about…” actually means “We’re going to begin…” I thought I’d go ahead and flirt with censure. All I have to lose is my posting privileges anyway, and it looks like that’s going to happen regardless of this post.

What does the slang term “Bogart” (verb, “to Bogart”) mean with regards to smoking a joint?

In an episode of ‘3rd Rock From the Sun’, Jane Curtain’s character believes she is in possession of a joint (which turns out to be a frozen french fry). Jane says to John Lithgow: “Let’s Bogart this fat boy.” “Bogart” in this context apparently means “light” the joint, or just a groovy way to say “smoke” the joint.

What about this scenario: three people (A, B, and C) are sitting abreast on a bench sharing a joint. The unspoken, yet generally accepted, smoking order would be A-B-C-A-B-C-A-B-C…, right? However, the physical configuration of the people (abreast, not in a circle) leads to the curious situation of C passing the joint immediately back to B, not A (B is then expected to pass it to A). (Assume for the sake of this argument that there’s some really good reason C can’t just reach over and hand it directly to A.)

B (greedy boy that he is) takes a hit each time it comes past him, so the order is now A-B-C-B-A-B-C-B-A… Is B “Bogarting” the joint?

If “Bogart” is not the correct term for what B is doing, what is?

“Going out of turn” is what B is doing, but what’s the slang word for it (specifically in the scenario described above)?

IIRC, “Bogart” = hogging, so the phrase from the song “Don’t Bogart that joint my friend, pass it over to me” would translate to “Don’t hog that joint…”

Basically, don’t get so caught up in your own high that you look like Humphrey Bogart working his cancer stick like when he’s all noir in a movie…

I thought “Bogart=hogging” was a reference to the movie “Treasue of the Sierra Madre” in which Humprhey Bogart’s character tries to get all the gold for himself

“Bogart” works there. In my circle of friends it was always referred to as “playing man-in-the-middle”. Keep in mind that we were about as hip as Al Roker.

I understood it to come from Bogart’s tendency to always have a cigarette in his mouth.

As you can see from the other thread, this sort of discussion is well within the rules.

Bogart used to often be holding a cigarette, even if he wasn’t smoking it. Remember that ‘cool’ pose he’d strike with a cigarette in his hand? To me ‘Bogarting’ a joint meant to hang onto it after you had finished taking a toke.
