Bones 20 April - is Boreanaz a lousy singer?

Hilarious - reminiscent of The Trouble with Harry, one of the funniest movies ever (by Alfred Hitchcock, to boot).

I started a thread because of my question: Is David Boreanaz a lousy singer, or was he playing Seeley Booth as a lousy singer? I would be disappointed if it’s the latter, because they already have Seeley as a bit of a dork.

He sang karaoke once or twice on Angel, (Barry Manilow’s “Mandy”), and I remember him being only marginally better than his performance at the wake. I get the impression that Boreanaz isn’t really musical at all, especially compared to his co-star, who, as the dead guy’s brother pointed out, has a lovely singing voice.

He doesn’t lack for enthusiasm, though.

I’ve been rewatching Angel lately, and season 2 is full of “Oh God, is Angel gonna sing? Isn’t there some other way?!?!” jokes.
*For the uninitiated, Angel would occasionally sing so that a friendly empath demon could “read” him and “put him on his path”.

I was amazed at her voice in that karaoke episode a while back. They should’ve released a full version of her singing Girls Just Wanna Have Fun as an mp3 to promote the show or something. I would’ve downloaded it, anyway.
But yeah, Boreanaz can’t sing a lick.

Consensus, then?

Gotta give DB points for doing the scene. Not many of us are willing to look like idiots.

I, too, was [not surprised, but I can’t think of the right word to put here] how nice Emily’s voice is.

I need to know in which episode they did karaoke - I just gotta check that out.

If you think Boreanez can’t sing… you should see him dance.

Emily’s sister, Zooey, has had some success as a recording artist, so it shouldn’t be all that surprising that Emily can sing too. Zooey’s “I Kissed a Girl” was a pretty big hit. Actually, she’s in the band, She and Him, which is pretty good.

Season 3 Episode 14, The Wannabe in the Weeds the 2nd to last episode of last season.

Given that he’s also a lousy actor, my vote goes to the former of the two.

ArchiveGuy, you’re clearly not a Buffy fan, or you’d be willing to give him a “Most Improved” award.

I had a minor crush on Zooey after seeing her in Elf and hearing her sing Baby It’s cold outside. She has a lovely voice.

Exactly - I don’t love him as an actor, I love him because I’m proud of him. He’s like my really stupid baby who worked really hard and graduated from high school! I have this warm feeling of affection for the guy just because he never stops trying, and he’s really come a long way to make it to mediocre.

Also, he’s a lot better looking than he used to be, IMHO.

I agree. Watching him in season 1 of Buffy is painful.

It’s arguable that he was playing up the uber-repressed, withdrawn persona; the change he underwent when he became Angelus for a time was too stark to be just a natural improvement in acting. I suppose some might disagree that he was good when he was Angelus, but he played scary SOB to the hilt IMO.

I think he was just better at playing Angelus. You could tell when he wasn’t Angelus because his “acting style” was “just walked into a sliding glass door and hasn’t figured out what hit him yet”. I think Angelus was just the actor having a good time.

To give him credit, can you imagine how boring it must be to have to play Angel all the time? Weep, weep, moan, sigh, stare, clench jaw…

So, the writers are just going for slapstick now, right? I mean, that couldn’t have been any more contrived. I remember when Booth was a stickler for the law, so much that he’d be forced to arrest Bones’ relatives. Now he’s stealing bodies, messing up the chain of evidence, and handcuffing a guy to a coffin. Enjoy your lawsuit, Booth!

On the other hand, it could easily be that they were playing Angel as being unable to sing. Angel got mocked a lot on his own series.

Great–take away his show but give the guy a cookie and a pat on the head.

It was a fun episode to watch but it was completely ridiculous too. The show is really going downhill.
