This show is so freaking clever. The dead bodies are so fantastically gruesome that they are funny. And the interactions between the characters…
Nope - Bones is gone, at least within my household. One man’s cleverness is another longtime fan’s piece(s) of crap.
The circus ep was simply an excuse to have B&B play “cute.” So what are we supposed to believe, that the uber-rational Bones has such unquestioning faith in Booth’s unproven ability that she considers no risk too great? Yeah, they’d just wing an undercover operation like that. A painted RV and Sweets’ carny family history  are sufficient. And BTW, can we get them in an old motorcycle/sidecar, and have Bones fish around in Booth’s pants? (Hint - you can take one hand off if you aren’t planning on shifting/braking immediately!) And I don’t know why it bugged me so much to have the clowns never remove their makeup/costumes. Hell, the last scene would suggest Bones slept in her fishnets - and both slept through the whole circus packing up and leaving. I know - maybe they were having some more of that RV rocking sex!
As far as the second ep, seemed like nothing more than an excuse to show Booth’s warrior side, and parade the perky-nosed agent. Excuse me - those were friggin goldfish, not piranha. Why do you think they would have turned into carnivores?
Meanwhile, both eps ended up tremendously abruptly in the final scene, with resolutions a viewer could not have guessed from the preceding 55 minutes.
Truly a shame. Prior to this season this was one of my favorite shows. Oh well - shows what I know. My understanding is that this season’s ratings are higher than ever!
I too found last night’s shows to be substandard. In addition to Dinsdale’s observations:
The new assistant is just thrust upon us with no introduction.
Our Washington, D.C. based investigators are checking out a crime in Texas or Oklahoma.
They come out from undercover way too early, having only arrived at one suspect.
The evidence to establish the cause of death is much more speculative than usual.
The determination of who is responsible for any illegalities is terribly murky. There is a somewhat unclear admission from one suspect, but no real confession nor body of evidence to remove doubt.
In the next episode, there’s ice fishing in the D.C. area (I grew up there and call bullshit).
Booth, officially declared a suspect, is allowed to tag along during the investigation.
The evidence gathered is weak, yet the culprit confesses almost right away.
In both shows the rather predictable, but usually compelling and dramatically satisfying pattern of building the case was forsaken, and not for the better. And in both shows the interplay among the characters - which is a significant part of its popularity - was barely there.
It doesn’t bode well if these are indicative of what this season has in store.
I was in class, so I missed the first episode (thank OG, because I HATE clowns!), but the 2nd ep was, indeed, ridiculous.
The thing that bugged me the most was scientists scratching their collective heads over how fish could die of ammonia poisoning, which is probably one of the most common ways fish die! Do they know nothing about the nitrogen cycle?! I realize this wasn’t a newly established tank, but even old tanks can become imbalanced, especially if left unattended for weeks on end! That was just idiotic.
My wife and I - both lawyers - were trying to figure out how the hell it came within the FBI’s jurisdiction. But who the hell cares, so long as they crammed in some witty banter between the 2 state cops!
I shouldn’t complain too much - the state cops were probably the bast thing out of both eps!
Re: the unannounced assistant - they seem to be rotating among 3-4 assistants this season. Not sure what explanation they’ve given - if any. I’ve heard suspicion that the PTB are just marking time until they figure out how to shoehorn Zach back in.
It makes me feel better that they were bad episodes, because my DVR lost them somehow. I saw that a 2-hr Bones was being recorded last night, but it was simply not in the list when I went looking for it. The box has never done that before.
Warning, your DVR has developed consciousness - and taste!
They are cycling back through the assistants we’ve already been introduced to. This week was another look at “Useless and Irrelevant Fact Boy”. He gave Cam something to play off of.
I agree that Bones is not high drama. I enjoy it for it’s campy nature. We aren’t talking real-world situations here. I mean, going undercover in the circus…come on! But we got to see Booth’s biceps and Bones’ gams, and they both looked cute in their goggles on the motorcycle and sidecar.
And I know enough about rec league hockey to know that they don’t play with the hitting and fighting, and running around collecting blood samples would not be inconspicuous.
They got to do some fun stuff during these eps, and I was highly entertained.
You are obviously the target market.
They used to be entertaining AND intelligent.
Emily Deschanel in lingere and you’re all complaining. Sheesh.
I stopped watching after 20 mins. of the first one.
