On the series Bones, in season 8 I believe, Hodgins money is all stolen by Pelant. Basically, Hodgins just throws his hands in the air and says “I’m poor now”.
OK, plots are plots and I realize it was written that way, but in real life, if something like that were to actually happen, wouldn’t there be some way to trace where the money went?
Yes, there would be. I’m not saying it’s not scary what hackers can do, but Hollywood definitely goes overboard with the omnipotent hacker meme.
I sort of drifted away from Bones after that. Were there ever any repercussions of Hodgins (ad uxor) losing their money … in the sense of ever being mentioned again? Angela once got a presumably large chunk of money from Bones for her contributions to Bones’s novels, and I don’t remember that ever being mentioned again either.
Not really. There have been a couple of non-nonchalant “we’re living on our salaries now” type statements. There was an episode where Hodgins drank the last of some hot sauce one of the “squints” had from his late grandmother. (And of course, no recipe.) Hodgins figured out all the ingredients and made some more and he and the “squint” (he called the guy Opie) made a deal to market the sauce. One of them made the comment that they “were gonna be rich”. That was all there was to that.
I don’t think it ever was, or if it was, I never heard it.
Bones was sitting on a royalty check. There was some back and forth between Booth about their contribution to the family income. Bones decided to give it to Angela.
Regarding Hodgins fortune: Even if the banks were somehow unable to track his money down and get it back, he still had grounds for an incredibly good lawsuit against them. They’d pay his money back plus punitive damages.
The show never really did well on, you know, facts, but in the last couple seasons its making up its own reality all the time.
There was a later episode where Hodgins discovered he had a mentally ill older brother who was living in an expensive private hospital and with the family fortune gone he ended up taking out a loan so his brother could continue to stay there (he was too proud to take money from Bones).
It was basically the whole ‘His fortune was filtered away!’ storyline that made me give up on the series. Were there a ton of things factually wrong in the series? Absolutely. It was just that one that made me say…no more.
