I was SHOCKED to see Bianca Kajlich. I almost didn’t recognize her as Christina Henry.
I watched the first 5 episodes Sunday evening, then the next 4 last night. Looking forward to the watching the tenth tonight.
Great series, great books.
The actress who played Rita Tedesco was making me nuts. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out where I’d seen her before. When I saw the name Juliet Landau in the credits, it finally hit me: Drusilla! That’s Drusilla the wackjob vampire from Buffy!
Watched the first two eps and am liking it a lot. The opening was especially good. I don’t like Lance Reddick as an actor. He was the only jarring note in “The Wire” (which we just re-watched) and has basically brought the same character to Bosch. He’s stiff, has no nuance, and his way of speaking is annoying.
Finally watched the whole season, and many of my earlier questions were addressed, if not solved. For a super genius, Bosch sure does rely heavily on dumb luck sometimes. It stretches belief that these paranoid drug runners never once thought “I’ve never seen a cane that thick before, hmmm…” Harry should’ve gotten a dog a long time ago!
Still, I’m hooked. If there’s a new season next year, I’m watching!
One of the big draws for me is LA itself–I love all the location shots. Los Angeles is a great city, but I hate going down there because getting around is a such a pain in the ass. Watching Bosch I can enjoy all the locations–I’ll pause episodes every so often so I can fire up Google maps to check out where certain scenes were filmed.
“Super genius” is not Bosch’s gimmick. Bosch solves crimes by being relentless. That’s why the theme song is “Can’t Let Go,” not “Super Genius.” ![]()
Oh hey, it’s “Boris” from The Wire and Trombly from Generation Kill! Good season. Only 10 episodes though. I wish they would draw out some of the story a bit longer instead of having so many overlapping arcs.
I have some bad news for you: I think that system is here to stay. Connelly has begun writing his books in such a way that they can be adapted to a season of the show without having to Frankenstein together multiple novels the way early seasons of the show did. The most recent novel, Dark Sacred Night, is pretty much 100% camera-ready for Amazon as soon as they establish Renee Ballard as a character.
Just finished the last episode last night. They were definitely setting up for another season.
Exactly. Bosch is relentless. He’ll read the murder book forwards and backwards (literally) several times. He’ll recheck leads. Reinterview witnesses. “Get off your ass and knock on doors.”
To be fair, Sherlock in Elementary may be a genius, but he solves cases by reading and rereading the case files, chasing down alternate theories, and pouring through the evidence until something clicks. Not everything is a flash of insight. Bosch isn’t as smart, but the process is valid.
I’ve got a question about Zelen, tje female detective in season 5 who’s investigating Bosch. She has a lot in common with Brasher from season 1, to the point of seeming like a continuation of the same character. In the books, are these two in fact the same person, and maybe they couldn’t get the same actress for season 5?
I have a question about the Chief of Police. I understand only about a third of what he utters, so I can’t quite get why he shredded the b and white polaroid of ? and then, when Bosch asks him for the “truth”, the Chief answers with one and a half syllables of sound that are incomprehensible. Can anyone enlighten me here?
The show is very enjoyable, with enjoyable characters, despite the irritating aspects of Bosch, AND of his daughter. AND of them together–luv you, luv you back, luv you back back…
Very much not, as Brasher does not survive the book she appears in, City of Bones.
The issue was that a convict was claiming that the necklace that was LAPD’s linchpin evidence was planted by the cops, namely Bosch. Fact of the matter was the necklace was planted, but by Irving, not Bosch. The pre-search polaroid proved it, so Irving shredded the evidence. Bosch called him on it. This may play a big role in the future, as Irving and Bosch have always been on much better terms in the show than they were in the books.
Put the captioning on, and you will not have this problem anymore.
Thank you to both Knead to Know and ThelmaLou. I’ll try the captioning to see if it make things clearer.
Re:Bosch and Jazz- it’s one of the things that gets lost in the transition and updating of the books. If I recall correctly, the reason he is drawn to jazz is not so much that he loves it, but that he can’t stand rock music after listening to it as a tunnel rat in Vietnam.
There are several other genres of music besides rock and jazz. One would think he chose jazz at least partially because he genuinely likes it…?
Not saying it’s a clever explanation, but at least part of his fondness for jazz seems to be based on having ruled out other types of music.
