Bosses day rocks!

I recently got officially promoted to Managing Attorney for my office, after serving in an acting capacity for several months. Things are always hectic around here, and it’s all we can do to keep our heads above a rising tide of cases, so I haven’t been paying attention to the fine print on the calendar. Had no idea it was Bosses Day, or that anything unusual was afoot.

Imagine my surprise when I’m on my way to lunch, and the secretaries created an excuse to get me to enter the break area, where they’ve set out pizza, dessert, drinks (soft, of course, since it working hours) and even a card signed by everybody in the office  I’m still getting used to my “officially new” role. Don’t really think of myself as a “boss”, but I am. And apparrently my staff like me. It’s a little thing, but made my whole day. Thinking maybe we oughta do this Bosses Day thing more often…

So, anybody else get surprised at work today?

My boss did, when I gave him a “Happy Boss’s Day” card signed by the team.
(My employee, on the other hand, gave me nothing … and her quarterly review is this week … hmm… ;))

I got a (long deserved and overdue) promotion to Supervisor back in January;I have a staff of four who now report to me. I didn’t even know it was Boss’s Day until I got to work and saw a bunch of people carrying presents (mostly flowers) for their bosses. Being a guy with four other guys working for him, one of whom is a fairly recent immigrant from Nigeria who just doesn’t get the concept of “Hallmark holidays”, I was not at all surprised to find that no one had bought flowers for me. I was, however, very surprised to get a $25 Starbucks card.

I’m just glad they didn’t decide to get me the red g-string that one of my fellow supes got from his (primarily female) staff.

This is exactly why “Boss’s day” is a Bad Thing. It should just as well be called “If You Don’t Suck Up To The Boss, It’s At Your Own Peril Day.”

Stupid card companies.

Which is not meant to detract from your happiness, Oakminster. A good boss is worth gold, and I’m glad your new staff like you. But as a general idea, I’m very suspicious of creating social pressure to stroke the Boss, with the implicit career dangers for employees who fail to stroke enough.

Geez … I thought the wink smiley would be a clear indication that I was kidding, but I guess you need it spelled out: I-w-a-s-k-i-d-d-i-n-g.

No one at my company – including me – gives a flying fuck about Boss’s Day. The only reason my boss got a card is because I happened to be at a store Thursday evening looking at Halloween cards, and the Boss’s Day cards were right next to them. He had no idea it was Boss’s Day until I gave it to him, and he’s probably the only person in the office who got anything from his employees.

Neither my employee’s quarterly review nor her career are in any jeopardy just because she didn’t acknowledge a made-up holiday.

My boss sent us a reminder yesterday that it was Bosses Day. A real class act, no?

Hey! I didn’t hear abou this! Hmm, next year I’ll have to talk your people.

Oops, meant to add…I had a boss years ago who took everyone out for lunch on Bosses Day. He was awesome. Took us all out on Secretaries Day as well, even though none of us were secretaries. I suspect he just like taking us all out for lunch. He was the best boss.

I tend to do the “taking the office to lunch” deal too. Great for Secretaries Day, and also did it last month to celebrate my promotion. Only problem is most of the office likes Chinese, but one person just doesn’t, and the best buffet around here doesn’t really have much else for her to eat. I think next time we’ll end up doing a pizza buffet, or maybe a home cooking buffet. It’s really not that expensive. I can feed the whole office for less than $10/person, and at the moment it’s only 5 of us. Beats the hell out of trying to shop for gifts, or battling mall traffic for the popular mall-wide gift certificates I pass out at Christmas…

We chipped in and got the boss lady a $100 gift certificate to a fancy smancy salon. She was a happy camper
