Bleacher Report update: BCS Bowl Projections: Which Bowls Will SEC Teams Be Playing In? | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors | Bleacher Report

For all the abuse that the ACC has endured this year, I am surprised that they have 9 bowl eligible teams. I didn’t think they would get their quota of 8.

I don’t have much to add other than Big 12 Lock - Texas. Hahahaha! I know they still have a chance against A&M, but it’s funny how horrible their year has been.

Just in case you haven’t seen this sort of info, Wiki has a decent summary of things at: Bids to college bowl games - Wikipedia

And a possibly NSFW (depending on where “W” is  ) update and commentary may be worth a few minutes of reading time at moondogsports.com - This website is for sale! - moondogsports Resources and Information.

If you have a worthy article on the general topic, please add a link to the thread.

I think this is actually WHY they have so many teams eligible. When there are several mediocre teams in a conference, they can all beat each other. Since it only takes 6 wins to get eligible, it is easier to get those conference wins against the other mediocre teams.

Contrast this with my Gamecocks in past years when UGA, UF and UT were all winning 9-10 games out of the SEC East. Even with their two cupcake non-conference games and two games against Kentucky and Vandy (winnable, but far from a sure thing) it would often depend on who their SEC West opponents were that year as to whether they even had a chance.

In case the issue arises about “all-time bowl winners” and who they are and who has most and all that sort of thing, at least one version of those stats is at List of NCAA Division I FBS football bowl records - Wikipedia

Here’s a scenario for you guys. Say South Carolina loses to clemson this weekend (they usually do and this would at least allow them to continue their proud tradition of end of season melt-down), but then beats Auburn in the SEC Championship game (maybe Cam Newton is ineligble by then). USC then gets the automatic BCS bid to the Sugar bowl as the SEC Champ ranked probably in the high teens or twenties. Does Auburn drop down below an LSU team that’s idle? If so Auburn is then out of the BCS since only two teams from one conference can go to BCS bowls. That would be awesome!

Possible but dreadful to Auburn! USCe must hold on to The Belt so Auburn can have a crack at it. Say No to Clemson, please.

Dreadful to Auburn is awesome!

Assuming Auburn beats Bama this week:

I don’t think that scenario would put LSU in and and Auburn out of the BCS. Auburn still beat LSU head to head, and the computers are going to give a boost to Auburn Strength of Schedule (SOS) as compared to LSU. SOS is cumulative not average and 13 games is more than 12 games.

Unlike the human voters, the computers only care that a team lost, not WHEN it loses. Auburn’s record would be 12-1 and LSU is 11-1.

And I think the Human Voters would still put Auburn ahead of LSU because Auburn beat LSU. IMO, Auburn would get the at-large BCS bid. And I would think the BCS bowls still want the probable Heisman Trophy winner, for the publicity. As tainted as it might be.

Minor nitpick: Pac-10 has 3 eligible teams, not 4. While USC has the required number of wins, they’re not eligible for any bowl game due to the Reggie Bush sanctions.
