BrainGlutton, wtf?

Look, say what you will about the guy, but Hitler wasn’t all bad. He did manage to kill Hitler.

He does tend to do this thing often, at least as far that I’ve noticed.

Witness how, in a thread about Hurricane Sandy, in which many people died and thousands others were scared and the city was basically left in ruins, he asks if NY smells better after its bath.

No, it’s not. That’s stupid. You first have to establish your premise before any discussion can be had. You claim that we allow statements about torture that are worse than rape to be ignored. When asked to provide examples, whether in quotation form or just via memory, you claim you cannot do so. You assert that rape is somehow special, and go to all these lengths to explain it, but you have not established your claim has any validity.

There just aren’t a whole lot of things that are worse than rape. At least, not in the realm of things that could actually realistically happen. And that’s the actual dividing line.

Hyperbole in humor only works if it so clearly exaggerated that no one would think you really mean it. There are real people out there that could think exactly what BrainGlutton said.

Furthermore, there is a line in humor, one that, if you cross it, you have to be sure to be funny, or you will be offensive. Wishing PTSD-level harm on someone crosses those lines.

There’s nothing special about rape other than it being a particularly heinous act, one that could really happen–and apparently did actually happen–to the former Mrs. Trump.

And those people are more likely to support a particular party, and cheer on The Donald -
which is exactly what led me to believe BG was making (an admittedly bad) joke.

Well, it is if it’s joking about/wishing on someone rape in prison. At least, that’s the impression I get from too many posters and postings on this board over the years.

He should have wished her death by snoo-snoo.

Means the same but without the negative reaction.

No need to get so rapey about your different cultural experiences.

Rapeseed.

Maybe thinking of expressions like “rape babies”?

Part of the problem for me was the context. A joke about Donald getting raped to death, while tasteless, at least contains humorous incongruity; nobody is likely to rape Donald Trump under any circumstances.

But saying that we want someone raped to death whom we were just discussing as (allegedly) being the victim of an actual violent rape - there’s no incongruity there. It’s too close to reality to be funny. And even if the story isn’t true, it doesn’t make it funnier.

Pretty sure the up_the_junction is referring to the phrase “rape culture,” which had been cited prior to that post.

Maybe he meant it in the sense of “abduction”.

*Rape!
R-a-a-a-pe!
Raa-aa-aa-pe!

A pretty rape!
A literary rape!

You can get the rape emphatic.
You can get the rape polite.
You can get the rape with Indians:
A very charming sight.
You can get the rape on horseback;
They’ll all say it’s new and gay.
So you see the sort of rape
Depends on what you pay.
It depends on what you
Pay.*

So why be stingy? :dubious:

The adjective is not so uncommon among the yoof in my world:

If you’re going to joke about rape, I insist you make it funny. Raping a famous celebrity to death on national TV is really not very funny, and implying that all Americans want this is even less so.

The last part is important, I think. How often do people celebrate the idea of torture while talking about news of actual torture of a specific person? Certainly there’s black humor surrounding the idea generally, but anybody who relishes the kind of stuff that happened at Abu Ghraib is generally and rightly considered to be a sociopath, and anyone who asked “who gives a rat’s ass” about some westerner who was beheaded would be seen as almost an actual terrorist. It’s not like sometimes we just find out that some celebrity is claiming to have been waterboarded 5 years ago, and then we make jokes about how they deserved it. Meanwhile, rape jokes come up all the time in discussions of real life events. Like this one was.

That’s what really makes this a weird hill for FP to choose to, um, make an ineffective argument on – this “raped to death” nonsense didn’t come up in any abstract impersonal sense that would make it a stretch to tie it to “actual rape.” BrainGlutton was talking about a specific person and a specific (allegation of) instance of rape. So the idea that there’s a liberal PC overreaction to the phrase on the grounds that somebody might be suggesting “actual rape” is funny just doesn’t make any sense at all here. This is that happening.

Interesting thing is that while your lengthy post on the subject suggests you’re explaining some clever new idea, I actually suggested this possibility in my first post to this thread. Based on the comments and reactions it did not seem to me that this was the issue, as I noted. But you never know, which is why I brought it up at the time.

Maybe this thread is actually the type of response he wanted.

Or maybe…

What are you even talking about? Were you snorting the marijaunas every day in the ‘80s? Ivana was Americas’ Princess Diana in the '80s. She was practically the Eddie Murphy.

Yay because he’s just - brace your legs - he’s just a - hold onto the wall right now - … glutton for punishment. Oh yeah. BOOM!
