Brasil 2014

Cahill’s last World Cup was ruined by getting sent off against Germany and subsequently suspended, and I figured remembering how devastated he was would be enough to make him more careful about yellow card accumulation. Guess you can’t fix stupid.

Very impressive first half from the Aussies. Pity about Cahill’s idiotic challenge; his goal was superb!

Now Van Persie will be suspended next match.

Penalty against Netherlands! Handball in the box.

AUS 2-1 NED!

I think Holland’s strategy of lulling Australia into a sense of security has been superbly executed. Now it’s time for the second part of the plan. There’s a second part, right?

This is just wild. Now 2-2.

Another very intense and interesting game. I’d never thought that the Aussies could play at eye level with Holland.

No one did.

Gotta make that save.

Ouch, that howler hurts for Oz. As we say here, I would have saved that ball with my cap.

AUS should have taken the lead moments earlier as well. Alas, that’s how this goes.

Bitter result for Australia. But it’s also a quality to win the ugly games in a tournament when you’re not at your best against unrelenting, physically strong opponents. At least Holland had a prompt comeback when they needed it.

And Australia win despite having scored less goals.
Holland deserved no more than a draw here.

This is Holland’s re-set, I think After the Friday game, they had an impossible task living up to the insane expectations. I feel pretty good about them now - I think they have a decent shot against Brazil, and would beat Mexico.

I hugely enjoyed Australia’s effort, but it’s a fair result.

Now Spain is under extreme pressure against Chile. Should be another great game.

Looking forward to it! Spain will probably bounce back, but I’m hoping for Chile to make it very difficult for them.

Xavi and Piquet will be out. At least Del Bosque is trying new things.

The handball penalty call was a joke.

Yeah, it was a harsh decision. What else could the Dutch defender do in that situation?
