Breaking Bad 5.15 "Granite State" 9/22/13

One of the sadder moments was when Walt begged and then bribed Forster’s character to stay with him for just a couple of hours. He was just so lonely.

Well, in real life, I wouldn’t expect any old Jesse to be able to open it with one hand while hanging with the other. He’s got no leverage at all.

Yeah, but I can stretch my imagination enough for that.
Whenever I see something like that I go back to something I heard once, here maybe, about trying to UN-hang yourself if you were to kick the chair out and then change your mind (or somehow accidentally hand yourself, which happens from time to time). Anyways, someone said that it’s essentially trying to do a one armed pullup and holding it for long enough to undo the knot.
I can hang from monkey bars with one arm for a few seconds, maybe even long enough to undo a bolt, but I couldn’t pull myself up high enough to undo a bolt that was on top of the bars. As soon as you let go with one hand you’ll swing down. People forget that.

I think Sampiro meant after they left, but I could be wrong.

I’m guessing it wasn’t meant to be a cage. It looks like they took over a farm or something so it’s probably a pit with a grate over it that Todd repurposed.

Though I can’t think of what it would be used for originally.

Agreed, but does he half to flip it all the way open, or just enough to wedge a leg/foot and “slide” out? Not to mention how much noise the door would make if it flipped all the way over.

I chuckled when Walt broke out into a coughing fit when trying to intimidate Saul one last time, and when Robert Forster’s character answered Walt’s question about delivering the money with “If I told you, would you believe me?”, right before dealing the poker hands.

Ahh.
I thought about that, but then I wondered what good that would do. By the time she got to the police all the way across the street, probably 100-150 feet from she was standing and explained what happened they’d be back in their car and a few blocks away. Not only that, the squad may very well have to radio someone in to go looking for…who? 4 guys wearing black that left the back side of the White house cut through some back yards, had on masks but probably don’t anymore and probably aren’t even on foot at this point. IOW, it’s probably useless at this point.

Also, they’ve made it very clear that they can enter and exit her house even when it’s under surveillance. She probably doesn’t want to fuck with them. She gave them what they want, she won’t mention Lydia so maybe they’ll leave her alone.

The problem is, they have no idea if her house is bugged. If it is the cops could get a warrant for the security tapes from the carwash to find the ‘black haired lady’.

Jesse’s a buck fifty soaking wet. Probably closer to one forty. All he has to do is unlatch the gate and lift it enough to get a grip on the outside and then push through with his head and shoulders. It’s not a particularly difficult feat, especially when you’re trying to escape with your life.

I wonder how they’re going to get him out of NH? It’s 8 miles back to the cabin, and if it was just the one call that would be one thing. But it’s not. There’s also the call to his son.

I guess he’ll have to steal a car in town and leave the barrel behind. A hundred K is enough to get him back to ABQ, and to buy that Big Ass Gun.

I can’t imagine what he’s planning on doing, though. Hunt down the Aryans? Does he even know where they are?

“It can’t all have been for nothing,” has been his refrain. I have to believe the plan has to be helping his family, somehow. But he doesn’t need a BAG to try to make a deal with the DEA for his wife. HE doesn’t need the money - he knows he’s about to die.

Dramatically, I think there’s got to be a confrontation with Pinkman. So maybe he is going for the Aryans. But what is the PLAN???

It looked like some business enterprise to me- at least in last week’s episode it did. Several buildings, with a cyclone/blower in the middle, connected to the buildings by ductwork. Anybody know what kind of business has a set-up like that? A lumberyard, maybe?

Why would Walt need to stay in the cabin for so long? Any “establish a new identity” experts out there?

This episode was a bit of a let-down for me- at least compared to last week, the Best Episode Of Any TV Show Ever.

You think he’s in New Hampshire already? I think he’s still in New Mexico. Otherwise why would Forster’s character still be around? But I have to stop letting my knowledge of the area influence me (I live near Albuquerque- the cabin appears to be on the east side of the Sandias).

It’s not the ‘establish a new identity’ part that means he has to stay hidden, it’s that he’s wanted, nationwide. He’s on the news. The vacuum guy/Forster said he had just seen Walt’s face on the side of a bus. He has to stay hidden for so long just to let this start to blow over. IOW, is he goes to the grocery store now, he’ll get arrested. If he goes to the grocery store in 6 months, no one will recognize him. It he goes to the grocery store in 2 years and says "Hi, I’m Walter White’ the clerk probably won’t even remember his name.

Vince Gilligan has said for the past few weeks that last weeks episode would be the best one of the series (and then usually jokes that it’s all downhill from there).

Since his family can’t and won’t accept his money, I think he’ll figure out a way to get it to Jesse.

I can’t imagine the money going nowhere and that’s the only person he can give it to that will do good. Assuming he reclaims the money (from the cabin or Aryans).

Yeah- considering his physical condition that was a hell of an undertaking. Walt has always engaged in a lot of strenuous physical activity for a guy missing half a lung.

I was going to say he could just buy one and pay cash, but I guess he doesn’t have time.

I don’t think so. But I bet he could find Lydia.

I guess he wants to get the money and get it to his family, but how can they use it?

Skyler: “Is anyone near the corner of 35th and Main?”
Cabbie: “I am, but I’m done. I just dropped off my last fare.”
Skyler: “What’s one more?”
Cabbie: “Why do you keep saying that?”

A)Do they get that much snow in New Mexico? I assume they do based on what you said
B)It’ll be easy enough for Walt/us to confirm since Forster said he’ll get Montreal stations on the TV. I’m guessing that wouldn’t happen if he was still in NM/ABQ.
C)If he is still in ABQ he’s going to get super lost when he tries to drive home.
D)That would be funny though. Forster driving around in circles all day and dropping him off an hour away from home and then charging him $50,000 for these round trip drop offs.

Also, I’m not sure why he’s doing these drop offs. He’s always been touted as a disappearer, not a protector which is what he’s doing now. His job was done a long time ago, he even said that. My only guess is that Walt paid him extra because of his high profile.

Okay, that makes sense.

They do in the mountainous areas, like the east side of the Sandias (not far from ABQ at all).

I missed that part.

They emphasized several times that it’s New Hampshire: Forster said so a couple of times, they had that Canadiens game on the TV in the bar, and we know Walt ends up in a car with New Hampshire plates. Forster said he was coming to see Walt once a month because “you’re you” and because Walt was paying him for his trouble.

Walt isn’t staying hidden to establish his new identity. He was staying hidden because that’s how you avoid getting caught. Forster explained that things like phone or TV outages could draw attention: calls home would be tapped, or if his service went out a repair crew could show up and someone could recognize him. I wasn’t kidding with that Bin Laden comparison: his last home had no phone and no internet. When he was on the run Eric Rudolph lived by dumpster diving. Whitey Bulger wound up with a condo, which is nicer than what Walt had. Being a fugitive is not glamorous. It’s true the heat might ease up in the future, but that doesn’t matter much to Walt since he’s dying anyway.

Forster said “Welcome to New Hampshire” and mentioned it was 4,500 mile round trip. We’re not in Kansas, or New Mexico, Toto.

I was surprised Jesse didn’t somehow use those empty handcuffs to get out of the cage. Link 'em together for leverage or something?

And who is watching Brock?!?
