Breaking news. Iran launches missile attack against Israel: 2024-10-01

Don’t know much right now. Apparently it’s much more massive than the April attacks and is only using ballistic missile as Israel was able to shoot down the drones they tried.

Hope Israeli dopers are safe.

TV is saying the all clear is sounding.

I can’t find word about Israeli deaths.

NBC reports Iran saying it’s over after two rounds of missiles, but there was an attack in Tel Aviv that appears to be terrorist related.

Fine here. Just spent half an hour in my apartment building’s bomb shelter. Heard some intercepts above.

Just saw a news report that gunmen shot eight people dead at a Tel Aviv train station.

What were the targets? Or was it a good old area bombing to probe air defences/demoralize the population?

Can you tie that in with the Iran missile attack?

181 missiles launched, aimed at targets all over the country. Many towards the Tel Aviv area, but there are also reports at missiles falling near the Israeli nuclear reactor near Dimona.

No fatalities reported so far.

Probably a coincidence. Reports are saying that the shooters were Palestinians from Hebron armed with automatic weapons.

Edit: this was supposed to be a response to @Czarcasm

No, and now I am wondering about the accuracy of the news story.

As a thought experiment, if Israel wanted to escalate (i.e., directly hit Iranian targets) in response then one would have to assume nuclear facilities would be high on the target list. Then again, blowing up nuclear reactors and enrichment plants may be a little too insane in terms of escalation, therefore it may not be luck that Iran missed that target.

Why do you think it is the same story? The shooter must have used a gun, not a ballistic missile.

Moderating:

We have a lot of general threads about violence in and around Israel. Let’s keep this one to breaking news about this attack and any obviously-related aftermath, please.

For instance, this is probably unrelated. If you want to discuss this attack further, please either create a new thread or take it to one of the general threads. Thanks.

How is Israel doing the same thing Iran did - launching a direct, massive attack - “escalation”?

Please read the modnotes just above. Stay on topic and don’t expand in this thread.

How to Reply as a linked Topic

Click Reply, in the upper left corner of the reply window is the reply type button, looks like a curving arrow point to the right.

Choose Reply as linked topic and it starts a new thread. As an example, you can choose GD, IMHO or The Pit for it.

That is actually the best method.

Total damage seems to be:

One person killed by falling shrapnel of an intercepted missile.
(ironically, the person is an Arab from Gaza, who was killed when the shrapnel fell on Jericho (a city in the West Bank under Palestinian control, no Israeli citizens are allowed to enter the city.)

One school building in the small town of Gadera was seriously damaged. (the building was empty at night, so no injuries.)

One restaurant in Tel Aviv was damaged by the shock wave of a missile which exploded nearby (apparently in the ocean)

Several other areas where missiles hit and damaged buildings.

Do you think Matthew Miller was right in the White House press briefing this afternoon? Should Iran have their nuclear program affected because of their ballistic missile strike on Israel?

Does this attack trigger any defense treaties, from the US or other nations?
