I don’t see the monarchy being abolished on the death of QEII. I honestly don’t even see the subject coming up in serious discussion. Of course, I’m over here, an ocean away, in a country that told King George III to go kick rocks 250 years ago, so my views may be colored a bit.
I’ll be sad when she dies. As another poster said, it’s the end of an era, an era that began 20ish years before I was even born.
It must have been something dramatic, like a stroke, for all this fuss to be made and for the family all to be flying in to be with her so suddenly. This is not something you’d get with a gradual deterioration into old age.
BBC has one of the sweeter, kinder photos of the Queen. Standing with a cane in front of a fireplace. I remember she often looked fierce thirty years ago.
She is much thinner. Lost weight in the past year.
This news saddens me a great deal, though at age 96, it’s not unexpected.
I’m an American, but my mother (RIP) was a WWII British War Bride. She loved her Queen, and that rubbed off on me.
Her reign has been exemplary IMHO and her passing will be a very sad event for England in particular and the world at large. When Elizabeth does pass, I hope it’s peacefully. But, hopefully her time isn’t up, yet.
it is being reported that they are waiting for the family to gather, speak to the doctors, then a statement will be made. they are estimating within an hour or two.
This time it’s unusual in several respects. The statement released by Buckingham Palace is strongly worded by royal standards (“concerned for Her Majesty’s health”, coupled with a weak reassurance that she “remains comfortable”). And it seems that the prominent members of the Royal Family are gathering at Balmoral to be with her. This is unprecedented and wouldn’t be happening if the situation weren’t serious.
The BBC also seems to interpret it that way. BBC World News has been covering this all afternoon.
You would, just a question of when. If (supposing) her life were gradually drifting away, at some point it starts to look irrevocable, and then you get this kind of reaction.
I hadn’t seen the photo of her with the new PM until this morning, and she really has lost a lot of weight. In someone of that age, that’s not a good thing even if she is mostly healthy – some extra weight is like a resource to help carry you through a bout with the flu (or Covid) when you would naturally lose weight anyway. If you haven’t any weight to lose, even a small illness can be very problematic.
I’m posting from in Scotland, and it’s been raining all day. In general the Scots don’t have much love for the royal family, or the English in general, but the grey skies seem fitting for today.
