Breaking - The Queen is unwell (has died): 8 Sep 2022

I think they’re doing it reasonably tactfully. They have to cover it; it lies in the nature of a monarchy that such events become a matter of public interest. In my perception they’re not waiting for her to die; they’re waiting for a reliable update and filling the time until then with the usual news network blend of analysts, commentators, and live footage.

The Queen is half Scottish.

She is Queen Elizabeth I of Scotland (not the second, which she is of England). Because the Virgin Queen Elizabeth was not queen of Scotland (there wasn’t a union at the time), so she has a different title here.

If she dies at Balmoral, where she currently is, she will lie in state at Holyrood Palace, her Scottish official residence. I could walk there from my flat.

Not so, despite Scotland never having had an Elizabeth I, she is still styled Elizabeth II in Scotland

The tone of the reporting is very serious, one might even think she’s gone already.

It is historically inaccurate Why the Queen's title prompted controversy in Scotland at start of her reign | Express.co.uk

Most especially Harry. For him to come into even semi willing contact with his family at this point must require something major. (From my loose, secondhand understanding of the gossip of the past couple of years.)

from wiki, should the worst happen in scotland.

the fact that “the firm” haven’t tried to rein in the speculation going on in media, is very concerning. that speculation is that there may be a regency announcement or final stages announcement once the family is at balmoral.

Operation Unicorn

Operation Unicorn is a plan that outlines what would happen if the Queen dies in Scotland. Details about Operation Unicorn were first reported to the public in 2019, although mention of the codename was first made in the Scottish Parliament’s online papers in 2017.[8][9]

Once the death has been made public, Holyrood Palace, St Giles’ Cathedral, and the Scottish Parliament will serve as the focal point of gatherings, with a condolence book open to the public set up at the latter location. Parliamentary business will be suspended immediately for at least six parliamentary days, in order to allow authorities to prepare for the funeral.[9] The parliament will then prepare a motion of condolence within 72 hours of reconvening.[8] The Queen’s coffin will first lie in repose at Holyrood Palace, followed by a service of reception at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh. Following this, the coffin would then be transported to Waverley station and then taken by the Royal Train to London if possible.[9][15] Otherwise the coffin would be taken by plane to London and welcomed by the prime minister and cabinet ministers.[3]

Some people may think she should have a different title in Scotland but, as @SanVito showed, she actually doesn’t.

I wonder if she’s become incapacitated and the gathering of family/delay in further announcements is to allow time to draw up the legal paperwork for a regency and prepare Parliament to approve it.

Also, the US TV news is saying that Biden has been “briefed” on the situation. Um… they don’t start briefing other heads of state for a common cold.

I have a horrible feeling she may already have gone and they’re just waiting for all the Royals to turn up. The BBC have got their two biggest news anchors drafted in, and they’re both dressed in full black suit / tie.

It may be, but she does not assert the title “Queen Elizabeth I of Scotland.” She asserts, among her other titles, “Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.”

See Wikipedia:

In 1953, John MacCormick took legal action against the Lord Advocate in the case of MacCormick v Lord Advocate challenging her right to call herself Elizabeth the Second. The case failed on the grounds that the matter was within the royal prerogative and thus the Queen was free to adopt any title she saw fit.

william drove the car with his uncles andrew, edward, and aunt sophie into balmoral.

This is what I’ve heard from someone. But it’s the sort of rumour that would be doing the rounds regardless of whether it was true.

True, Twitter informed me of Prince Philip’s death several times and several years before he actually died.

FWIW, I’ve found that if you go to bbc.co.uk and click on the live story about the queen, it updates automatically so presumably it will inform us immediately in the event of her death.

In a way it would be fitting, with all the talk in the UK about devolution and levelling-up, to have the big thing happening outside England.

I’m guessing they got that call from the doctors. I got that call once, from an ED doctor in New Haven about my brother. Fortunately, he pulled through, though not until after several weeks in ICU and more time in a regular patient bed.

i’m hoping that harry isn’t the hold up here. that will worsen already strained family issues.

When my grandmother was in hospice, they were able to tell us a couple hours beforehand that this was the end. I’m not sure how they knew (and our course it’s just one anecdote) but somehow they could tell. No stroke or heart attack involved.
