Breaking - The Queen is unwell (has died): 8 Sep 2022

Are those angels or gargoyles on the end caps?

I’m leaning angels.

I suppose having all of the grandchildren stand vigil at the same time avoids the awkwardness of trying to split them into groups. How would you even do that; boys vs girls, prince(sse)s vs non-prince(sse)s, or have them draw lots?

Picture back. Hall practically empty.

Of course, it is 4 am. But presumably there are thousands in line outside?

The tracker says the wait is 24 hours. Queue is shorter than it has been all day.

People now being admitted.

I figured on 4 eldest, four youngest.

Looks like all new candles.

How long was the gap?

About a half hour.

Must have been this. Someone rushed the coffin, pushed some people and knocked down a child, and tried to pull off the Royal Standard.

I think they vacuumed the red carpeted steps. I noticed earlier that there were scuffed places at the corners where the guards stand. Probably had to sweep the area where thousands have been walking and shuffling along, too.

ETA @Rilchiam: Yikes!

I think the timing is wrong. That occurred at 10pm local time. I think that’s about six hours ago, if I’m calculating correctly.

They showed a close-up of the ceiling again and it’s definitely angels.

They’re angels.

Dewey: Yeah, you’re right.

And I just have to comment on how this whole mourning period is feeding on itself. NTTAWWT! What I mean is, when I first heard, I thought, “Okay, tonight or tomorrow, I’ll get out my Upstairs Downstairs boxed set and watch the last ten minutes of the season 2 finale, where they react to the death of Edward VII. And then the entire second season premiere, where they’re reacting to the Titanic having gone down and Lady Margery with it.” I thought I would have to be responsible for my own catharsis. But this is beyond catharsis; it’s its own trip. And it’s tied for 9/11 for the most world-changing event in my lifetime.

No, that was hours earlier than the 11pm-midnight gap discussed here.

Speculation on line is that these gaps or “exciting” views of the hammerbeam ceiling are times when maintenance is done, like swapping out the candles, cleaning up the drips, perhaps sweeping the floor, vacuuming, etc. You can’t keep a public space like that looking so tidy without some work from time to time.

Au contraire

With the establishment of the Royal Air Force Albert transferred from the Royal Navy to the Royal Air Force.[18] He served as Officer Commanding Number 4 Squadron of the Boys’ Wing at Cranwell until August 1918,[19] before reporting to the RAF’s Cadet School at St Leonards-on-Sea. He completed a fortnight’s training and took command of a squadron on the Cadet Wing.[20] He was the first member of the British royal family to be certified as a fully qualified pilot

So they did let Andrew wear his uniform during the Vigil of the Princes.

King Charles III and William doing walkabout on the queue. Very classy.

I really wish they would add an info bar about who/what unit is currently keeping vigil. Who are the guys in the snazzy hats with a big feather?

Never mind, Royal Archers, I guess.

The upper area where the relatives stood yesterday for the princes vigil is starting to fill up. Might be a sign that they will arrive soon.

Here come the grandchildren. Cars pulling up now.

They’re coming down the stairs into the room.

Oh dear… my room is suddenly very dusty.
