Brett Favre retiring today?

It looks like nothing has come of this. At least not yet. Let’s see what happens after Reggie Bush runs on that Packer defense for about 12 miles next week.

One mile for every million Brett is making this year. Chew on that. He aint goin’ nowhere soon. He’ll get injured before he steps down voluntarily.

Oh yeah? Well, well…go eat some cheese!

Lame? That wasn’t lame. Lame would have been better.

Mmmmm, cheese.

I was in Chicagoland this past weekend and at the last minute decided to go home rather than watch the game with a bunch of friends that are Bears fans. I am so very happy I did that, the shame would have been crushing.

It’s nice to see the hated Bears becoming competitive again, tell me this though: If the Bears had had a shot at picking up Favre during the past off-season, you guys would have been all over him instead of wondering about Sexy Rexy, wouldn’t you have?

Actually, that’s a pretty tough question. I’m going to go with probably not though, unless it was as a second which I’m sure isn’t a role he’d be willing to take. Might be interesting to offer him a coaching job, see if he’d be willing to do that.

All bets would be off if it meant the differance between between winning a ring or not winning a ring however.

Um, no. If you do a little forum search you’ll find more than one thread floating that idea from last season and you’ll find just as many posts from me railing against the idea. 1) I’d be burning Bears Favre jerseys in effigy outside the stadium every weekend. 2) He’s a piss poor QB and has been for the last 5 years or so, why exactly would you think we’d want him chucking INTs for us? You can keep your pill poppers and pedophiles up North, thanks.

Who’s got the short memory here? Grossman, the guy you think we’d love to replace, is 3-0 in Lambeau as a pro and the Bears have won 4 of the last 5 meetings by a combined score of 104-65. Favre threw a combined 10 INTs in those 5 games and had an average QB rating of 59.5. Grossman in that same time posted a 80.4 rating. Cheeseheads, Madden and the rest of the fan club forget that Favre hasn’t been much of a QB since the turn of the century.

Actually Cheeseheads know the facts. Favre had a QB rating of 94.1 in 2001, 90.4 in 2003, 92.4 in 2004. From 2001 to 2004 he had a completion percentage of 63%, threw for an average of 3750+ yds a season and averaged 30 TDs a season.

He had an awful year last year. He had awful years in 1999 and 2000 as well. I agree that it is most likely the end for Favre, but how many of these threads are there going to be where someone decries that Brett was finished “years ago” or as you put it “the turn of the century”, without that person knowing what the hell they are talking about?

(bolding mine)

That would be you with the short memory. Look at Favre’s passing stats for the time period you’re citing.

| Year TM | G | Comp Att PCT YD Y/A TD INT |
| 2000 gnb | 16 | 338 580 58.3 3812 6.6 20 16 |
| 2001 gnb | 16 | 314 510 61.6 3921 7.7 32 15 |
| 2002 gnb | 16 | 341 551 61.9 3658 6.6 27 16 |
| 2003 gnb | 16 | 308 471 65.4 3361 7.1 32 21 |
| 2004 gnb | 16 | 346 540 64.1 4088 7.6 30 17 |
| 2005 gnb | 16 | 372 607 61.3 3881 6.4 20 29 |

He’s not the same QB that he used to be, but until the Pack fell apart last year, he was still one of the top 10 in the league. Since the end of '99 season , he’s thrown 151 TDs and 114 picks. Taken out 2005 and those numbers go to 131 and 85.

Grossman’s thrown 5 TDs and 7 picks in his career, and he’s never played more than 3 games in a season.

Yeah, I know, I saw the stats before I said it but I liked the ring to that phrasing. Sue me and my poetic license. Still, you couldn’t make me a single argument for trading him heads up from Grossman right now, consecutive starts streak or not.

Plus last year he had the most completions he’s ever had (372) and threw for 3881 yards. Not bad for someone who’s washed up. If he had someone to throw to or only had 20 or so picks everyone would be singing a different song.
And don’t forget, as much as I hate to say it, the Bears DO have a good team.

I remember you being high on Grossman from last year, but I don’t think he’s an NFL QB. If I thought I had a shot at a ring, I’d trade him for Favre in a heartbeat. Hell, if I were running the Bears, I’d be playing Griese and shopping Grossman for a draft pick. I doubt I could get a first-day pick for him.

Jesus Omni, obsess much? I think you might take football a liitle seriously if you would be burning Favre in effigy. Hell, I was at Lambeau the first time Jimmy Mac was introduced as a Packer and he got a standing ovation, but maybe we have a little more class up north here even with our “pill-poppers and pedophiles”.

I’m not so sure he wouldn’t have been there by himself burning the jersey.

I won’t be the first Bears fan to openly badmouth Favre, and at the same time admit the guy’s a first ballot hall of famer who’s pulled more clutch throws and games out of his pocket than all the Bears QB’s combined in the past 50 years. He’s a great ball player, even if his record lately doesnt reflect it, and if he’d been a Bear for the past 14 years, we’d all love him.

As good a place for this as any:

Grossman is a NFL QB, though I don’t project him to ever be a Pro Bowler. My enthusiasm for him last year was stated in relative terms. That was on the heels of Orton winning 10 straight games and people debating if Grossman should come back. I stated, and was proven right, that for as well as the team did with Orton at the helm they needed Grossman’s ability to actually mount something of a passing game to beat good teams. I claimed he was the best option for the Bears at the time. I still think he’s the best option for the Bears now, a hell of a lot better than Favre (with our defense throning INTs like that would be beyond stupid) but if you were offering me Matt Leinart or Jay Cutler I’d make that change. If we’re talking Kyle Boller, Kerry Collins or Patrick Ramsey, no thanks.

Grossman is good, not great, but good. Much like Jim McMahon frankly.

For reference, lets look at Rex’s stats over his first 9 games compared to a assortment of other QBs first 9 starts.

There’s really nothing he’s done so far to indicate he can’t be a successful NFL QB and most Bears fans, when ignoring the numbers, will agree that there’s just something about the way he manages the huddle which leads you to think he will become something good.

And there’s something to the fact that they’ve held out on him as long as they have. Sure, the McCaskey clan obviously didn’t get any of Poppa Bear’s genes when it comes to player and team management, but they can’t be *that * goddamn dense can they? Even Wirtz isn’t that stupid.

Well, there’s his injury history - it’s not something you can ignore. If Peyton Manning spent 75% of every season watching from the sidelines, the Colts would be a mediocre team at best (and this Baltimore kid would be dancing in the streets).

As far as fans acknowledging “something about the way he manages the huddle” - give me numbers every time. Fans are anything but impartial talent evaluators. There’s a reason I don’t let myself bet on Ravens games…

I lost track of the number we’re on for the “play onemore year, Favre” -thing, but let me 4th that.

Also put me on the “First ballot HOF-er”…I have a LOT of respect for him, but absolutely detest him as a player.

Diogenes…allow me to wish your team a happy year in the cellar with the other rodents. Maybe there will be an open bar and some strippers in an adjoining cell! It’ll be tight, but maybe the party barge will fit. I’m just glad that all Bears players are now eligible for beatification, having been certified model citizens.

The Bears. I have to say it (in a long hijack)…I’m very optimistic. As long as Rex can stay healthy, I think they have a very good chance of getting to the Super Bowl. I truly feel that, if Rex and the “O” can put 10-14 points up per game, we should win most games. Disclaimer…I wanted Griese to start, too. Rex had a lot of zip on the ball, and was putting it in places only the receivers could access. That’s good throwing.

Having said that, I don’t think he’ll ever be Favre.

You’re kidding right? Lies, damn lies and statistics my friend. For example:

2004 Season

There are three examples of reasonably comparable QB statistics from 3 of the last 5 seasons. Ponder briefly the talent levels such impartial statistics must surely reflect.

Now, realize that those QBs, in order are:

Aaron Brooks
Ben Roethlisberger

Tom Brady
Kerry Collins

Mark Brunell
Matt Hasselbeck
You can have the statistics anytime. I’ll take my biased, subjective opinions based on game observation and intangibles.

I said I’d take statistics over a fan’s evaluation. IMO, you think Grossman’s better than he is because you want him to be a good QB - that’s the same reason I defended Kyle Boller’s playing for as long as I did. I wanted him to be a good quarterback and lead the Ravens into the playoffs for the next ten years. He’s not going to do that.

That doesn’t mean I’ll ignore game observations or intangibles at all - I’ll certainly consider them. I will go with the numbers if I think the observations are biased, though. I haven’t heard anybody who doesn’t have an emotional stake in the Bears’ performance say that they think Grossman will be a good quarterback.
