IIUC, it was illegal to count those military ballots but the majority of Democrats acquiesced to their counting without pursuing legal remedies — even though all know these ballots would favor Bush by a huge margin. This was to show respect to young Americans in uniform. And thus Bush, rather than Gore, became the 43rd President of the United States.

Regardless of the morality of the situation, the LAW required that the ballots NOT be counted. I am not entirely uncertain that Dopers who usually advocate for conformity with the LAW would not advocate for the LAW in this case also, were the party alignment reversed.

This dude said he didn’t think the requirements were onerous by the state; it goes to show you that he believes everyone can read, everyone has the Internet, everyone postal address is up-to-date, mail doesn’t get lost, people don’t throw out mail, people don’t go to school or jail, people don’t have unintended hospital stays, or have unforeseen circumstances (like a death of a close family member or natural disaster, taking care of an ill family member, working multiple jobs, etc) that might make returning a post card not a priority; it’s clear from his words that neither him or nor his family has ever known poverty, struggle, or adversity in their fucking lives. If he could sprinkle like one-billionth of that extraordinary fortune on his people being interned in concentration camps, maybe we wouldn’t have kids being deported back to their home country (without their parent(s)) or sexually assaulted while under the care of the US government.

I suspect Bricker, like Ted Cruz, has nearly always been treated like a white man and thus he has no skin in the game. When you walk around with white privilege, ethnicity transforms itself into a novelty, a datum point to explain an unusual last name, a physical feature like hair color or texture, a strange 23andme result, or a reason to choose to learn a specific foreign language in high school or college. Nothing more, nothing less.

Where would you get the idea that racism doesn’t exist? It exists. It exists, in part, due to House Pochos like Bricker who worship at the altar of whiteness. My issue is that he deliberately claims it in order to be a mouthpiece of white supremacy. Why not represent who you are? Whiteness. Why not just be who you are? White. You don’t see sunken place clowns like post-confirmation Clarence Thomas or Kanye West talking about being black. It’s about conforming to white folks and bowing down to the power of whiteness. On a cold day in January 1963, Malcolm X highlighted this very point to the NAACP at Michigan Sate University.

For Bricker, there is no right or wrong, suppression doesn’t mean what it means, and every issue can be boiled down to some ridiculous feud between Democrats and Republicans, Hatfield and the McCoys, Red and Blue, the Green Bay Packers and Michigan. People of color primarily vote Democrat not because we want to, but because white people insists on forcing us to choose from either raging dumpster fire or a flaming meteor.
