Are you sure it’s progressives who believe naively in the inherent goodness of people? 'Cause I’m always hearing Neocons talking about unregulated market behavior producing the best possible outcome, everyone everywhere wanting freedom, prviate charity supplanting government efforts, and private individuals making better choices than governments. Also that people can be trusted to use good judgment with firearms.
You know, the big rule is don’t be a jerk.
Or one of the big rules anyway.
And you’re a jerk.
Although it was a very unsafe thing for her to do, I can also see her point of view in wanting to believe in the good that people have, no matter how small.
Granted she’d have to try quite hard to find the good in you, wouldn’t she?
You’d probably skullfuck her for shits and giggles, then piss on every inch that your smegma-encrusted shriveled-up peen could reach, wouldn’t you?
That’s just how you roll, hm?
Oh you can admit it; after all, you’re a big internet tough-guy, right?
Oh wait, now here comes the “omg im tuf irl too i beet u upz cuz i no kahratez, lulz black beltz”, right?
Save it, posershit.
Someday, not only is karma going to be a bitch to you, she’ll grind your balls under her heel, make you take that spiked dildo, and you will sqeal like the pig you are.
Why are people saying she was naive? Maybe she knew that what she was doing was risky but decided to do it anyway. There are worse ways to risk your life.
I don’t get the bride get-up. Why? Was she making a statement about women and their societal role, about cultural commonalities, about travelwear, what? Or was it a gimmick to attract attention? (or both?). What kind of attention did she really want?
I am sorry for the woman, but I am puzzled as to just what this was supposed to achieve long term.
Sailboat, I think you are spot on. I marvel sometimes at the naivety I see in some conservatives worldview. Of course, the cons don’t have a monopoly on naivety, but they do seem to cling to it relentlessly.
The tree-hugging hippy that got eaten by bears was actually a man, his girlfriend happened to be with him, so I guess there was a woman who was killed by bears, but the famous story you’re thinking of is Timothy Treadwell. Werner Herzog made a fabulous documentary about it. Yes, he was naive, and possibly a little bit stupid, and yes he probably got what was coming to him, but that’s not the same as deserve. Nor does it equate to hoping someone would get murdered for a silly idea.
I mean there are some cockamamie spectacles that liberals put together to promote a cause, and I admit I am generally skeptical about people who think that the solution to some global ill is to put on a costume and dance around in the public square. Did she deserve to be giggled at? Possibly. But murdered? That’s a little bit far.
This board is about fighting ignorance, not spreading it. Remember?
I learned a long time ago that there is not one whit of difference in the way people respond to things regardless of their political affiliation.
I recall long-haired, fringe-jacketed hippies insisting that they should be judged by their character and not the length of their hair or the clothes they wear. (But guess how they would react when conservatively dressed and well-groomed me showed up?)
I can recall decades worth of intolerance shown by some of those who evangelize for tolerance; anger and a desire for violence from some who preach pacifism; etc., etc., etc.
Hateful people can be found on both sides of the political spectrum. Also naive people and intolerant people and stupid people. No one side has a greater claim to the moral high ground.
Now, having said that, I, as a conservative, admire this young woman. I also feel sorry for her and I’m pissed about what happened to her. She was an artist. She was trying to make a positive difference in the way that seemed most natural to her. She also apparently had a considerable history of hitchhiking around Europe and, based on that history, likely felt perfectly safe in doing so. She was also accompanied by a like-minded female friend from whom she only became briefly separated.
As someone else said upthread, women are raped and murdered every day while simply going about their normal daily routine. The assholes in this case are the guy who raped and killed her and the OP…with honorable mention to those who would attribute the OP’s sentiments to those of us who are conservatives and/or to conservatism in general.
I had planned to just skim over the responses to my OP and let the matter rest, but your post is so egregiously asinine that it deserves some comment.
The common denominator in both these cases is terminal stupidity.
Hitchhiking is dangerous enough in a western country. It’s so dangerous that I would consider it only under the most extreme circumstances, and I would strongly discourage anyone, man or woman, from hitchhiking in anything other than an emergency situation. And that’s in a western country. For an unescorted woman to go hitchhiking in a Middle Eastern country is little short of suicidal. Have you thought what the police and the locals thought of all this? Have you considered that they probably saw her as a royal pain in the ass whose ugly death left behind a mess which they had to clean up?
This woman died because of her stupidity and vanity. Because of her almost psychotic refusal to accept the fact that the world in which she lives is a dangerous place, and because she saw herself as a beautiful, enlightened soul delivering a joyous message of love, peace and brotherhood to the benighted masses, she recklessly placed herself in harm’s way. As a result, she got killed. Her death was not noble and brave. She died because of her inflated sense of her own importance and because she chose to live in a fantasy world where no one is truly evil, rather than deal with reality. The same is true of that dumbass hippie who got himself eaten by bears.
Yes, on some level their deaths are tragic. But the visceral disgust and contempt for the manner in which they threw away their lives overwhelms any pity I might otherwise feel for them.
I commend the Turkish police for a job well done. I apologize to the people of Turkey for this vain, foolish European woman who came to your country and left you with nothing but problems.
