"Bridesmaids" w/ Kristen Wiig (boxed spoilers)

Just got back from seeing the new Kristen Wiig comedy *Bridesmaids *and I have to say, it was easily the funniest movie I’ve seen in quite a long time. I could go on and on about all of the bits that I found most amusing (to avoid spoiling anything on preview) - but I thought I’d first get this thread going and see if anyone else has gotten out to see it yet this weekend.

I will say that everybody in this movie was pitch-perfect… Wiig, Maya Rudolph, the girl from “Mike & Molly” (holy crap was she funny), Ellie Kemper, Clementine from “Reno 911,” Jon Hamm, the late Jill Clayburgh, the guy from “The IT Crowd”… (ok, so I’m not great with names and can’t be bothered to look them all up at the moment…sorry).

If you’re worried it’s just a female Hangover, it’s not. Not at all. It has a really good story at the center of it about friendship and taking responsibility for your life. Anyway, great great stuff and it was a lot of fun to see it in a packed theater with nearly everybody completely laughing their asses off.

Anyone else see it yet?

Saw it, liked it. Dragged a teensy bit at the end but overall a lot of fun.

Just got home from seeing this movie with some friends. Hysterical. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard while watching a movie. A few places where I couldn’t believe “they went there”. Threw all bridesmaid movies cliches out the door, and I don’t think I’ll ever see the chic from “Mike and Molly” the same way ever again.

I was going to pass this up. The trailer is beyond horrible, not one funny microsecond in it. The whole concept is disgusting to me based on what I see in the trailer (bitchy/ditzy bridesmaids and oh yeah, the “fat” one is the comedy’s comic relief) and I cannot stand anything to do with weddings.

BUT…

I love Kristin Wiig and Maya Rudolph in the movies I’ve seen them in (I’ve never seen either of them on Saturday Night Live, and I’ve never seen any of the shows that any of these other people have been in),

AND…

enough people have praised this movie to the heavens that I feel I must give it a chance. So I will see it at some point.

I agree with you that this is something I usually find off-putting–and that’s definitely how it comes across in the previews. But in this case, she’s just one more weirdo in a group of weirdos. And I would argue she’s the least pathetic of the crew.

It sounds like you’re leaning toward seeing it. It’s not the greatest movie of all time, but I rarely head to the theaters and felt like I got far more than my money’s worth.

I love this woman. I think she’s the funniest, most talented female comedy actor (as opposed to sketch or stand-up) since Lucille Ball. One of these days, I’ll remember her actual name. :smack:

Melissa McCarthy.

I heard an interview with Paul Fieg where he said that that character was written much differently in the original script, but Wiig suggested McCarthy after seeing her do improv in LA. People had been lining up around the block when she performed, and now I can see why… She’s brilliant.

Maya was mostly the straight woman in this but did have maybe my favorite comic moment in the film:

When she slowly “melts” into the street as she’s running for the toilet. “It’s happening!”

I took the wife to see it for repayment of all the times I dragged her to a film that I wanted to see, I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was really funny. The girl that played Megan was hilarious, especially when she stole the dogs.

I do wish they would have included more of Erin, from the office.

Looks like I’m bucking the trend. I wouldn’t recommend it. There were some things that were funny, but many gags just fell flat (for me). And there were several cringe-inducing moments that almost had me walking out of the theatre. I do agree with the poster who said that Melissa McCarthy stole every scene she was in.

All in all, though, the funny didn’t override the bad, for me. So thumbs down.

J.

Just came back from it. The theater in Manhattan was filled with mostly women and couples and we laughed like hell. It is a little draggy towards the end but most of it is terrific, with solid performances by Kristin Wiig, Maya Rudolph, and the folks who play Helen and the cop (Rory?) were pitch-perfect. I’d never seen MIKE AND MOLLY but McCarthy was wonderful as Megan, sexy, self-confident, and heartfelt in her tough way. And it’s always great to see TV faves Clemmie and Erin again.

I’d recommend it, especially if you’ve ever felt like you’re the girl stuck in a rut as your friends move into a new financial or romantic bracket above you. Story of my life.

Just got back from the theater. Liked it quite a bit. The audience here in college town, MA was eating it up. Mostly college-age couples and groups.

Megan beating sense into Wiig’s character was probably my favorite scene. The bit about “you say you have no friends??” really hit home. Also loved the dogs.

I also really liked the handling of the romantic interest subplot- the cop was sweet and their scenes together were fun to watch, but whether or not they end up together really took a backseat to the friendship story, which I thought was appropriate.

I’m not a fan of rom-coms because the protagonists are often so cloyingly desperate to find a man it gets on my nerves. When I saw this in previews, I thought, ‘‘Finally - a good, raunchy romantic comedy for women.’’ I was worried at the opening that it was just another Desperate to Be Married Woman dressed up in adult comedy - but actually, the film explores a lot of themes beyond just romance. I loved that they allowed the protagonist to be deeply flawed instead of some kind of superwoman. I thought it was hilarious, but also moving and inspiring in a way. It kind of left me feeling like no matter how far you fall, everything is going to be okay.

Hmm, after reading several critics rave about this movie, and reading this thread, I may have to give this one a shot. I’ll try to take my wife and pretend it’s for her.

Really mixed feelings on this one. I loved a lot of the characters, really liked the relationship between Kirsten Wiig’s character and the cop and other relationships. But I literally left the theater during the dress-fitting scene. I’ll spoiler my objections:

I am not seven years old. I do not find feces and vomit funny. I don’t think even I found it funny when I was seven. It is just awful and embarrassing. Maybe it is because I’ve suffered food poisoning from an otherwise excellent restaurant (all it takes is one moron not washing his hands). Maybe because I’ve suffered the mortification of diarrhea, having to wash my underwear and pants in a restroom. Maybe it’s because I’ve had to clean up my own restroom after a guest suffered explosive diarrhea and vomiting. Or maybe it just isn’t funny.

Pretty much ruined an otherwise decent film for me. All I can hope is that the person authoring the DVD puts in good chapter marks no I can just hit “next” and skip that whole scene.

I tried to start a thread about this after I saw it last Saturday but my computer took a bigger crap than poor bridesmaid Meghan .

The gist of my comments were that even if you generally don’t like romcoms or grossout humor, don’t pass this one up. It is so much more than what the trailers would lead you to believe.

Also, to **gaffa’s **comment, I’v posted my strong objection to vomit scenes many times here. We’re talking deal breaker. I knew damn well from the commercial that there was gonna be a big one (that’s why I’m not spoiler boxing it) and there is and it is graphic. But as squeamish as I usually am, I was laughing along with everyone else. Coming from me, that is a huge testament to how enjoyable this movie is.

Oh and if you’re not already a Jon Hamm fan, you will freakin’ fall in love with him after this. His small role as the dickwad bootie call is worth the price of admission alone. Anyone know why he’s not credited?

Ditto! Usually I cannot stand puke (or shit) humor, but something about that sequence just made me laugh like no other of its kind. I think for me it was the pitch-perfect way it showed the seesawing tension between mental propriety and overwhelming bodily betrayal. These women aren’t drunk fratboys who don;t give a fuck, they have a lot invested in normal and reasonable social conventions, but in the end we all must succumb. Like Gaffa, I’ve been there, but for me that sequence actually made me look back and laugh.

I saw the movie this afternoon and really like it, for all of the reasons listed here. I don’t know if my observation is valid or wrecks the movie, but Kristen Wiig’s character could’ve saved herself a lot of angst if she’d been up front with Lillian, Helen and the other bridesmaids that she was overwhelmed with the ideas and she simply couldn’t afford to participate in the elaborate ideas. I liked the gross out scenes in the bridal salon because, well, I’m immature and it kinda forced the women onto a more level playing field.

Yes, but it’s realistic. A lot of us try to hide the fact that we’re not at the same level financially as some of our friends.

I really thought Helen was going to try and kiss Kristen Wiig at the end of the movie.

The trailers are absolutely AWFUL! I will probably still see it because of the amazing cast, but whoever was responsible for picking out those critics’ quotes and voiceover dialog should be shot. I can’t remember them exactly, but they boil down to ‘Even though there are women in this movie, it actually has some real jokes that even real people with testicles might like!’
