Brilliant! The Cabin Pressure appreciation thread

They don’t need to appreciate it. I just need to be able to put in on for me while they sit in the back doing whatever our kiddos do during longer car rides.

When they were all looking for missing whiskey, and Martin says :”The thing is, we’ve taken away all the things that can’t possibly have happened, so I suppose the only thing that’s left, even though it seems really weird, must be the thing that did happen in fact!

Nothing offensive, but they might act like my family and roll their eyes while dad is Driving While Giggling.

Perfect!

I think you’ll realise after listening that the correct response is “brilliant”.

The knowing response from everyone being that he was like “Miss Marple”, nicely done indeed.

Listened to four episodes. My thoughts which are totally original to me, but I bet almost everyone has said.

  1. Wow, amazingly funny even in its first episode.

  2. This could have been another series of Blackadder.

a. Hugh Laurie could be the captain. Prince George(Martin here)
b. Rowan Atkinson could be first office. Blackadder(Douglas here)
c. Baldrick could be the flight attendant.
d. Stephen Fry as the owner of the airline, or the Queen or something.

  1. I love it. Brilliant!

I’m so glad you guys lead me to this. I’ll be listening to all of them.

Glad you liked it, the good news is that as good as the first series is, the others are better. It doesn’t tail-off at all.

In more general Finnemore news he is currently involved in a feature film with Armando Iannucci. Seeing as Iannucci is one of my comedy heroes and I’ve never met a piece of Finnemore work that I didn’t love, I don’t see how it can be anything other than…than…really quite good.

Fizz!

When we started listening, we were coming off the back of watching the old Fry/Laurie Jeeves and Woosters with the 10-year-old, so it wasn’t long before he started mapping the Cabin Pressure characters on to that model. It sort of works:

Caroline = Aunt Dahlia/Aunt Agatha (depending on how incompetent everyone around her is being at that moment)
Arthur = Bertie (not too bright and easily pushed around but cheery, kind and hard not to love)
Douglas = sort of Jeeves, insofar as Jeeves is the one who produces the solutions to whatever mess people are in; very un-Jeeves insofar as Jeeves is self-effacing and lives to serve, while Douglas isn’t and doesn’t.
Martin = ??? It breaks down here. Jeeves-ish in that Jeeves too believes there are proper ways that things should be done; somewhat Bertie-ish in that he’s not completely competent and gets in his own way a lot.

But it was interesting to see him trying to make the connections, and thinking about how characters work.

(I’d quibble with your c. Mahahloth, in that Baldrick varies between stoic and miserable, while Arthur is in a perpetual state of idiotic bliss. But a perfect mapping is impossible, or what would be the point?)

Buzz!

have a banana!

Also, the other night whilst playing Mario Kart against my Daughter (Yoshi Island, one of the more technical tracks) She said she was going to beat me. I replied by paraphrasing Douglas with…

“I refute that using the following postulates
I win every time on Yoshi Island
This is Yoshi Island
This is a time
I will win this time”

“A good landing’s any landing you can walk away from; a great landing is one where they can reuse the plane.”

Love it.

Ipswitch is my favorite episode so far. I laughed the whole way through.

Ipswich is one of the funniest ones but St Petersburg is the big turning point for the series. No cheating and listening to it early, though.

Thank you for this thread, KneadToKnow! I’d heard about *Cabin Pressure *somewhere a long time ago, but never checked it out and then managed to forget about it…until I saw this thread the other week. I now have the complete boxed CD set sitting on my desk at home. I don’t have much opportunity to listen to things like this, but I think I need to plan some long-ish drives for the near future!

I can from recent experience recommend the round trip between Charlotte and Cooperstown.

Finished the entire series today.

Wow, that was hilarious and I loved it. I’m so glad everyone here recommended it. I can see myself re-listening to it all within the next year.

Brilliant!
