Brit Dope Winter 2003

You could always get a job self-employed selling large bolts and nuts in your local Jarvis maintained railway station.

Do ride the rail, and bring yer own track innit…like.

Anyways, the Wars of the Roses Y v L is a distorted view, as it were two wings of the royals scrapping and turned out to be more nearly represented geographically as Northish, vs Southish.

Also Lancs, like we told told you off of getting too lippy don’t forget what happened at Towton, don’t make me start hurling dreaded batter puddings over them 'ills.

“eeeeeeee Minnie…!”

I might be persuaded to indulge in a chocolate errand, which would make your attendanceFransesca pretty much compulsory.

I think if we look around for splendid eats it might be an idea to avoid curries if Tansu attends, the food dying agents used commonly in them might well have been the trigger for that momumental headache in Brum(or it could just have been Brum itself) I read a little bit about them and that reddish one used a lot in some Bhunas and that yoghurty one are the worst culprits.

Ohh… We’re so scared.

Good point. We can’t have an unwell Tansu again. That’s just wrong. Well, it could have been Brum, its got the potential to make anyone ill.

Sorry to hear that Francesca, but you should come anyway - it will do you good.

Woohoo! Just got my approved vacation request back from my boss, so it’s time to deal with logistics and tickets and such!

Has there been an Official Londope Hotel designated yet? Does anyone know one nearby the site of the festivities that isn’t horrendously expensive and is reasonably clean and comfortable? I know “not horendously expensive” is a relative term when speaking of London, but hey, I’m not fussy in terms of amenities, having survived the former Soviet Union.

Eva Luna is looking for help finding a reasonably central London hotel. Let’s assume for now that the main focus of our activities will be Charing X/Trafalgar, and/or Waterloo. Can anyone help Eva on her quest, or provide good online sources? Is there anyone who has to go into town on a regular basis who could mooch around and try to pin down some options? I’d do it myself if I still commuted every day, but I work from home so I’m not in town as often as I once was.

Dear Queen Fran, look, sorry to hear the bad news about the job, but two things.

(1) It’s not a Dopefest worth the name without you and some sheeps. Please reconsider and agree to come. Finances? Pah! We’ll look after you. Email me privately if we need to sort something out. There are always ways and means. Please come. You can’t miss the Anguacookies ™.

(2) Yeah, if your job gets canned it always feels yucky at first. You’re entitled to feel that way and anyone would feel the same. But (speaking from experience) it IS survivable, and more often than not it turns out in the long run to be a blessing in disguise, although I appreciate it doesn’t feel all that great at first. You’ll be OK, trust me. But by all means have a darn good sulk about it!

Well, I think I’m OK on finding hotels with my trusty Let’s Go, but as I understand the Tube stops running past a certain point, so easy commuting distance would be great…plus if other out-of-towners are coming, it might be cool to stay in the same place, or at least close by. Extra bonus: my train the following evening will leave from Charing X, so it’s simple to just leave the suitcase there and pick it up on the way to the station. And feedback from actual humans is always better than feedback from books, no matter how good the books.

Cameraderie is always a good thing, though. **Francesca, ** are you sure you don’t want to drown your sorrows in some rugelach? It’s a time-honored Jewish method, trust me. Works at least as well as alcohol. Think of the trip as networking or something, OK? A bummed-out person never does as well interviewing.

Can’t suggest anything on the hotel front, but I’m going to stick my oar in about food. There is a very nice Persian place on Goodge Street called Dish Dash, and it is fantastic. Still, its probably nowhere near where we’ll be, and with my sense of direction, staying in one place is probably a good idea.

Fran, I’m really sorry to hear about that, but things will get better, I assure you. It would be lovely to see you at the DopeFest, it won’t be the same without you.

Assuming the Northern Line will be functional by the end of November (and that’s a big assumption these days), Goodge Street is a quick hop from Trafalgar Square. Or we could <gasp> take a bus.

I think we should all threaten to stamp our feet and hold our breath until we all turn blue unless Fran agrees to come.

I pulled cookie duty so it’s someone else’s turn to volunteer.

I don’t think you had a choice on cookie and mine pie duty though.

yeah - it was miltary-style volunteering.

RIGHT YOU 'ORRIBLE LOT WE NEED A VOLUNTEER!

PRIVATE EDWARDS YOU WILL TAKE TWO STEPS FORWARD RIGHT NOW OR YOU WILL RECIEVE A SLAP ROUND THE EAR’OLE!

Eva - I usually use www.londontown.com and www.hotel-london.co.uk

Oops - submitted too early. Both sites let you search for availability.

www.londontown.com accesses discount rates at various chain hotels. Last time I stayed at the Thistle Bloomsbury (walk or bus from the festivities) and Anahita stayed at the London Ryan (Kings X Road, slightly longer walk). The London Ryan will probably be the cheapest on that site - about £30 not inc tax for a single room.

And how often have you said that before?

Aaww… Poor Garius. That’s a tad harsh on *ianzin though surely. I’m sure he won’t clip you round the earhole. However, piss me off, and I tend to twist your ear instead. Its painful.

We so need an :evil grin: smiley here.

A bus!!! From Trafalgar Square to Goodge St?
Soft all’ya. I say we walk it as the world’s most cynical and diverse tour-group.

Yeah, but I hate walking on CXR-- after about the 200th clueless tourist bumps into me I start wishing I owned a machete.

OTOH, if we let Tir walk in front, the pavements will be clear in no time. Especially if she starts showing people her monkey.

yeah, because a 20 minute walk up one of londons busiest streets on a saturdays loads of fun confessor.
bus 29 goes straight from trafalgar up past goodge st. on the tube its pissing about changing lines etc.
were off to the silver cross then?

on a different note, does anyone here care that i dont use capitals or punctuation in my posts? the people in the BBQ pit seem to.

No, we don’t mind (and may I just add that it’s a real honour to have you here, Mr. cummings… :D)

Eva, if I have managed to get my house move sorted by then, you’d be welcome to my sofabed.

paul - personally I don’t mind as long as it’s consistent. Actually to be honest I’d prefer it if you used punctuation, it makes for a clearer, obstacle-free read, but the capitalisation is irrelevent.
