British Columbia (B.C.) Woman charged in the death of 6 dogs

I’m sorry if this is not the correct forum in which to post this story. I first posted it in The Game Room (mistakenly thinking “dog walking” had something to do with sports). But I’m really not sure what would be the correct forum. There is no forum for “News Headlines” and I would think that would be the correct place for this thread. I’m confused about where it belongs.

Emma Paulsen, a dog walker, was alleged to have dumped the bodies of six dogs in a ditch in Abbotsford, B.C. She has been charged with six animal cruelty-related counts in connection with their deaths.

On Sunday, the B.C. SPCA said that Paulsen has been charged under the Criminal Code with killing or injuring an animal, causing unnecessary pain and suffering to an animal, failing to provide the necessities of life to an animal and falsely reporting an offence.

I just don’t understand.

Why would she dump their bodies in a ditch? Surely she knew that she would have to account for their disappearance one way or another.

So, regardless of where she left their bodies, what was she going to say?

Sometimes these crimes are just a total mystery to me.

BTW, I have visited Abbotsford and it feels like a small town. But there is a real evil criminal element that hangs out in that town.

I would guess that she might have been drunk. This sounds like the kind of crime committed by someone who had been drinking and was not in possession of their mental faculties. It was a real stupid thing to do. There was really no point. It was just so stupid and unnecessary.

Do you have any connection to this? To me it seems pretty obvious; she didn’t realize how hot it gets in an enclosed vehicle, etc. etc., dogs are dead. She panics, what is she going to tell the owners? Gets rid of them at the earliest opportunity and says they disappeared, someone must have stolen them.

The “evil” sentence is pretty melodramatic, and the “drunk” just silly - you can accuse her of being naive and unforthcoming, but I don’t see anywhere there that she woke up that day inspired to kill a bunch of dogs. It’s another reminder not to leave dogs / children / etc. in cars on hot days, it just happens this time to be a whole bunch at once.

I didn’t imply that she was evil. I was just trying to describe what Abbotsford feels like for people who have never been there but would like some idea of what kind of place it is.

But I must agree with the rest of your post. I think you’re correct in saying it was silly to imply she was drunk. I just couldn’t think of any other explanation for her behavior.

I would have thought most everyone aged 21 or above knows how dangerous it can be to leave dogs in an enclosed vehicle.

She certainly appears to be over 21 years old.

The police believe the dogs were in the pickup bed with the cap on. I can see how someone wouldn’t equate “pickup bed (with cap)” with “enclosed vehicle”.

I don’t understand what you mean by saying that you can see how someone wouldn’t equate “pickup bed (with cap)” with “enclosed vehicle”.

I am not disagreeing with you. I just don’t understand what that means. If you would like to explain what that means, I’d certainly like to understand.

As far as my previous post goes, when I said I figured that most anyone above the age of 21 knows better, I later came to realize that her age was irrelevant. If she was old enough to be a dog walker, then, IMO she should have known better.

As one who likes strong drink, yet who has never killed anything whilst under its effects I’ll just ask WTF?

On first reading of the OP I questioned the author’s state of sobriety.

Dog walking is a sport. They have an annual competition called the West Minister Dog Show.

Completely sober idiots leave their dogs in enclosed vehicles and spaces all the time resulting in death. Anyone who has ever sat in a hot car, knows how uncomfortable it is. Anyone who thinks what is unbearable in terms of heat for a human would be acceptable for an animal is an idiot. On top of that, it’s not like it isn’t all over the internet and the news all the time in the summer not to leave your dogs in a hot vehicle.

The fact that she is a professional animal caregiver, and did this, and then tried to hide it, makes her guilty of criminal negligence in my book.

I thought it had something to do with Yo-Yos.

I already admitted to being in the wrong for suggesting she was drunk. But, if you’d like to smack me around any more, please feel free. It’s OK. I probably deserve it.

If it will help, I will apologize again. Sorry.

A pickup bed is something that one typcally associates with “open to the elements”. While reading the previous article, I was wondering how the dogs could have suffered heatstroke in the open bed. Then I noticed that the bed had not been open at the time.

One of the dead dogs was her own dog. I don’t know if that makes it worse or if it even can be made worse, but before you take care of other people’s dogs, you’d better make sure you can take care of your own damn dog properly.

Could be that her dog was trained to stay in the bed with the cap off but with the other five in there the woman decided it was best to have the cap on, without thinking of the consequences.

Ever remove the cap from a pickup truck? Typically a two man job.

It’s part of her job to think of the consequences.

Yeah, that’s not something you just pop on and off a truck in five minutes. From the accounts I’ve read, she’s left the dogs in the bed of the pickup before, with the cap on. So it’s probably been on the truck all along. That’s not something you tackle without some help, a set of tools, and a case of beer. In fact, she might even have had it professionally installed.

Nitpick:

I am a small female and the topper on my truck is aluminum and held down by four c-clamps. It weighs under 100 lbs (fiberglass toppers are much heavier) and l can remove and replace it by myself in a few minutes.

/nitpick.

Our dog walker uses this set up for picking up and dropping off dogs on pack walks. This is not an unusual set up and I’m confused about this discussion about taking the box topper off and on. It’s essentially a permanent piece of the truck, the dog walkers (and many other people round here) have it on specifically to keep the dogs enclosed.

She obviously left them for way too long in the enclosed space, even though reports I’ve read say she left the vents open and water for them, or whatever. She’s an idiot, especially for lying, and she deserves what she gets.

A man here in Sacramento was arrested for leaving four dogs in his car for at least two hours in cages, with no water. When the window was broken to release them, three were already dead and one had to be euthanized.
